what about the GTR setting one of the fastest laps ever on the short Top Gear track?

BTW, I'm just trying to represent the other side for the sake of discussion. I'm not really a GTR fan.

The Nissan side will say, "do you really need launch control on a track to get fast lap times? This car was not designed as a drag racer."

you should already know that "top gear" and "reliable scientific data" dont go togteher in the same sentence:biggrin

a Lambo Gallardo beat it by .2 a second and it's a 4wd car. Lambo has about 80 more advertised HP and weighs less than the GT-R.

interesting results for the GT-R.

Nissan needs to do a balls out race tire run with any other manufacturer that wants to compare on the same day. THEN let's see the results.

Hands on contact with one.

Huh?

The GT and GR-R are both highly touted performance cars. They go about achieving this performance in totally different ways - yes, apples and oranges.

I look forward (as always) to W. Mitty's write up. He does a world class job with his compare and contrast reviews. Check out some of his early reports in the media section.

The Top Gear times are interesting but I have a greater comfort level with the RING times.

No doubt its a fast car...however, I'm just not drinking the Koolaid Nissan is pushing with its performance numbers. It doesn't add up based on the basics of power to weight.

nissan has issues, but KIA has to deal with this giant huge problem

The Custom Alignment Crew are going to love this one.http://tinyurl. com/achhrhThe synopsis:-Huge chick buys a new Kia Rio.-Car pulls to the left. (Hmmm)-Dealer performs an alignment.-Huge chick gets in, car still pulls to the left.(Wonder why?)-Dealer offers to align car again.-Car pulls to the left again.(Still wondering?)-Dealer offers to align the car again with her sitting in it.(Soundsreasonable to me.)-Huge chick feels insulted and goes on national TV.Her best line was how she felt "crushed" by the experience.Yeah, there is some crushing going on in her life...

I have had the oppurtunity to spend alot of time working on, driving, and riding in, the GT and the GTR. To put it simply, they are two completely different cars. They each have their own characteristics and qualities.

Each car accels in completely different areas. The GTR accelerates and handles better than any car I have ever experienced. With a little bit of computer tuning and a performance exhaust the car literally leaps upon acceleration. I have never experienced anything like it. However, it's not as sexy as the GT and it will never have the mystique or heritage of the GT.

The GT just doesn't handle like an all wheel drive car because it isn't one. At the end of the day the all wheel drive helps ALOT. I think that's something that everyone can agree on.

The GTR is a VERY capable car. On the New Zealand Targa Rally a guy showed up with one that was completely stock. The only work they had done to it was installing a roll cage and racing seats. It still had the stock brake pads in it. The driver finished 5th place overall. We finished 8th in our GT. Now obviously the GT was never built for this type of racing so naturally the GTR would be better suited. I'm just trying to illustrate that each car will perform better in different environments. For example, I would be willing to bet money that a GTR will never beat a GT in a 0-200+ MPH run. Or if you took a GT and a GTR to Daytona (road course) I'd bet that the GT would run away from the GTR. The two cars are COMPLETELY different.

With that being said. If I had the oppurtunity to own one as a second vehicle that I would only take out for weekend trips. I would choose the GT all day long. However, if I could only afford one sports car and it was going to be my daily driver as well as my weekend toy. I would choose the GTR.

Just my opinion...

Would gerenally agree with your assessment, except the ride quality in the GT-R destroys its daily-driver potential IMHO. As I said in my comparison on Inside Line, I'm flumoxed on how the GT-R can have an electronic suspension with three settings and STILL have worse ride quality than the GT -- even in the softest setting.

Actually I shouldn't be flumoxed -- that's where the weight issue comes back on the GT-R. That much poundage needs to be reigned in to keep the car stable around corners, and that means an ultra-stiff suspension -- even in "comfort" mode.

I drove my GT to Denver and back last summer, with the wife joining me on the return trip. I may try to ignore the GT's faults for my own selfish reasons (I love the car) but when my wife gets out after a 16-hour straight blast over 1,000 miles and says, "I'm really impressed. This car is easy to ride in for a long distance with no fatigue or other ill-effects" that say A LOT to me. :eek

I'm betting she wouldn't make the same comment after 1,000 freeway-explansion-joint miles in a GT-R. But maybe I'm wrong...

Zactly.

I really like the GT-R, don't take my comments the wrong way but wouldn't trade it for my Porsche 2009 C4S with PDK. No way!

As to the FGT...double no way!

Waxer,
I'm thinking of getting a C4S Cab w/ PDK also. What do you like about yours? (Sorry for being a little off topic but at least we are sticking w/ twin clutch trans) And how is the PDK trans holding up?

ofcourse now when you go to buy a kia you have to sign a waiver, that you will not gain any weight, if you do your warranty will be void:biggrin

Bruce: The new PDK is slick. Its basically the same set up used in the Porsche Cup cars. Shifts both up and down are lightening fast in sport and in sport plus mode the new C4S does 0-60 in 4.1 little more then half a second off the mark of the turbo. It is very quick (GT3 territory). I find it as involving as a stick from a drivers standpoint. Its like driving a Cup car.

The more I drive the PDK the more I'm convinced I wouldn't go back to a stick.

A friend of mine said it best. Owning a GTR is like having a 3" Penis and bragging about how much Viagra you have access to. In the end it is a 3" penis.

Japan has tried to break into specialty markets for a long time - and not always successful. Why was the NSX discontinued? It was hot when it first came out and still looks good today but underpowered. At least with NSX it was beutiful to look at.

Take the Toyota Truck for instance. Even fully equipped and with 4X4, very few will buy it for heavy duty use such as construction etc.. When was the last time you saw a Toyota Truck towing an open car trailer with 3 cars on it? You can not take a 1/2 ton truck and compare it to a F250/350/450 or a Sileverado 2500/3500 equipped with a Diesel engine. Long before the economy went South they were sitting on lots and selling for invoice.

People often complain about the GT-R looks, but personally I feel this side profile shot really shows off the curves in an aesthetically pleasing fashion.
