I just took delivery of the much praised Nissan GT-R. I drove it about 400 miles over the weekend through hill and dale. So far, I'm impressed.

Full verbose and overblown review to follow...

its funny how no one is even talking about the fact that once the warranty is over on the GTR, how much would it cost to repair or replace let say the computer? or the engine, or anything of significance, we expect high repair costs on ferraris and lambos, but can you justify a 20,000 dollar tranny on a 70,000 dollar car, how much is the computer, 10,000 grand? gtr may have super car performance , but it seems like it will have a supercar maintenance bill as well,I heard somewhere a quart of oil at the dealer retail for 80 dollars:eek this may not be true but if it is............ (you can put your own comments here)

This isn't a full-blown Ford GT versus Nissan GT-R comparison, but it's my opinion based on plenty of seat time in both:

Thanks for the link Karl.

Wow, the GT-R looks like an SUV in frontal height and looks in comparison to our sleek sexy GT's.

Why did they have to make it so ugly? 10+ people take photos of my GT when I drive it. No one can tell me that would happen with a GTR. Uggh!

Ed

You would be surprised how many "JDM fanboys" take pics of the GTRs. My buddy had the first one in Texas and it got way more attention than my old GT at the car meets. I'm assuming it had to with the newness of the car.

It depends on the crowd and where you go.

I saw a GT-R the other day. Its better looking in person then in the photos. Its a very nice/cool car I would still rather have a Porsche C4S with PDK... but to each his own.

As to Nissan's claim of its Nuremburg Ring time, Porsche challenged that time and did its own testing with non "race" tires" and a stock GT-R and came up with 7:54. Porsche knows the RING and I believe their numbers are probably accurate.

Porsche's times for the Turbo and GT2 (stock with stock street rubber ..i.e apples to apples) were faster by nearly 20 seconds. I believe it. The GT-R is BIG and HEAVY car. No doubt it's fast as snot but its still big and heavy.

Porsche's times at the RING for the 2009 Carrera S C2 with PDK was 7:50. I imagine a C4S would be a tick or two faster with PDK.

No way in my mind does the GT-R de-throne the FGT. Not even in the same leauge. It doesn't even de-throne the Carrera S in my mind. No way.

My 2 cents.

I'm blown away by this entire thread. How can a Ford GT and a Nissan GT-R be compared in any way? The ONLY thing they have in common is that they are both cars. There is nothing else to compare! It just doesnt make sense to me. You've heard of apples and oranges...this is like eagles and deer. Both animals but thats it.

Can't compare to the Ford GT. Hands on contact with one.

Both the FGT and the GT-R are positioned as high performance cars, with great acceleration, braking and cornering; to that extent they are the same. However they are not positioned to reach the same target audience. Certainly the audiences overlap, but neither car is a replacement for the other.

The question is, "if you could only own one, which one would it be?" I believe the answer would most resoundingly, favor the FGT! :thumbsup

As far as invoking emotion inside you, the Ford GT does it like very few cars every made. A GTR cannot hold a candle to the GT.

However, for a track junkie that wants the ultimate bang for the buck, the GTR is great car. You can daily drive one and then go out the the track and bust pretty much everything out there for 80 grand.

yes, but then didn't Nissan retest, and got the same time (or near enough) and basically told Porsche to get driving lessons? :rofl

i do hear from lots of sources that you need a different driving style for the GT-R.

A 4300 miles GTR, which looked as good as a GTR can look, went across the block at the Manheim High Line Auction in Atlanta today for $64,500. Now, that's a track car bargain :cheers

Maybe it look good as a GTR can, but needed a 20K tranny from too many launches, that would bring it to $84.5K.

Well looking at the listing of testing times and dates for the RING I don't see any official time logged at the RING for Nissan after Porsche tested the GT-R and came up with times consistent with times obtained by others. Whats VERY interesting is the BEST time for the GT-R at the RING by FAR was with Nissan. All the other multiple times for the GT-R were 25 to 30 or more seconds slower. Hmmmm. Makes one wonder...doesn't it. In fact the Porsche test of the GT-R was the second fastest of multiple track tests by others for the GT-R. I don't think you can say Porsche/Walter Rohrl needs driving lessons. I would suspect Nissan perhaps was using a special GT-R..or perhpas Toshio Suzuki is that much faster than anybody else and if thats so then maybe we need to have Toshio drive all the others to get a real apples to apples comparison.

I'm just not buying a 4000 lbs 475hp car does the ring in "Enzo' or CCX Koenigsegg, Carrera GT or GT2 territory. Sorry. Not when multiple tests by others are 25 seconds off the pace with a GT-R. Nissan is obvisously "selling" this story but I ain't buy'n. I didn't fall off the cabbage truck yesterday.

Is the GT-R fast. I sure it is. Is it Koenigsegg etc..fast. No way.

It amazes me the number of posts these GT-R threads get. One thing I definatly agree on is that the GT-R and Ford GT are not two cars that you can really compare. They are two totally different cars that are in two totally different categories. The GTR is NOT a better car than the GT. Lets stop comparing the GTR to cars twice its price and compare them to cars that fall in the same price/class range. I feel the GTR will come out on top everytime when you look at it in that light. Now as for looks, thats all in the eye of the beholder.

Many of you know what I think of the GTR, but, I always said to each his own. Having said that, I would personally like to know why you bought the GTR? Performance, looks, track use, everyday transportation, the best out of Japan etc..... I have always been fascinated by the reasons people buy certain cars and in this case would love some insight. Please share.

Respectfully,

Sam

It was Nissan that compared it to those cars, thats how they were able to get so much hype about the car. if your going to talk the talk , you have to walk the walk , and so far it seems like they are lacking. every unmodified car that I have seen tested on the drag, has posted times in the low 12.00s to high 11s, nissan claimed low 11s and high 10s. that is yet another arena where they have fallen short, and now that there is no launch control anymore it will be interesting to see the revised numbers. I think for the price (like you say shelby) it is a wonderfull car, if your into playstation and all that.:biggrin but I dont think it would stand the test of time, and I dont think it will be revered like its predecessor, time will tell, just think how many people would consider buying a used one knowing well that once the warranty is over they may be looking at a 20000 dolllar tranny repair bill in the cars future. it is clear that the tranny may be a weak link, now that therey is this uncertainty out there it can not be good for the cars resale value, not knowing what the previous owner has done with the car.
