Tmstunts post really got me thinking of how we are influenced by our personal experiences and the dangers of sterotyping. IMO the "cheeseball" issues must be a SoCal thing because they are in conflict with my personal experiences in the Midwest and South/Southeast USA. The Corvette is a 55 year old American automotive icon and to many of us, particularly those over 55 who grew up as middle class Americans, before we were old enough to drive, the Corvette is what we aspired to own more than any other car. I owned my 1st Corvette ('60 Fulie) as a teenager, had a couple Callaway TT's in the late '80's, own a couple Z06's today and looking forward to the ZR1. The only 2 local people I personally know on the ZR1 list are car collectors who also own GT's. To me, owning a Corvette has nothing to do with collectibility or car investments, it has more to do with fullfilling dreams. Cars are typically poor investments but lots of fun because of the personal niche they fill. :cheers

Well said. I STILL remember seeing my 1st one - a '57 fuelie - when I was 13 years old. ON THE SPOT I vowed to own one someday. In February of 1968 I fulfilled that vow with a brand new 427/435, 4-spd, "T" Top. I still remember practically every foot of the 100 mile journey home with it. (Ya. Ya. I'll say it first: "Gee Pockets, you put more miles on that 'Vette during that trip home than you have TOTAL on your GT NOW!" :bored :biggrin)

But it can be argued that 'stunts' observations, as far as TODAY is concerned anyway, are also correct. Not in the MAJORITY of cases to be sure, but, there DO seem to be more 'Vette owners like that these days for some goofy reason. (Except for the "in and out of traffic" thing. I haven't seen THAT trait around this area.)

To address the So Cal issue. IMO after the late 60's and early 70's as we all know the Vet lost most it's power but gained a bunch of curves and rattles. Many true sports car fans out here (So Cal) started leaving the American muscle car world and switched to European style sports cars in particular Porsche . Being this area is loaded with wanna-be's the Vet found a home with Producers, Actors divorced wives and mid-life crisis dads who didn't seem to care as much about performance as in perceived style. Add to the fact that it was the 70's and too much gold, Angel flight pants platt-forum shoes and toupes were the rage and much of it seemed to find its' way to behind the wheel of many a Vet. This =cheese and the car became the punch line for many a joke.
Having said this I had a 67 435 convert. and nobody ever kidded me about it being anything but cooool. I also owned a 03 Zo6 and I caught a ton of "Mid-life" crap but didn't care due to it being a fantastic performing car. The car does seem to be loosing this rap sense the C-5 and C-6 are performers again.

Bony... you, funny man :banana :banana
The Z06 is history when the ZR1 arrives and the ZR1 will be history when the next edition arrives, etc. There is no scenario in my future where the GTX1 would go in favor of any Corvette, but I hope to always have a Corvette (with a Genaddi conversion). :cheers

FYI: The ZR1 will give you 3 more inches

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Read the nose protrudes 3 more inches than Z06 1 inch...you can tell from front shots, its deeper with more aggressive grille

Keep in mind the same type of criticism can be leveled at the beloved Mustang. I think it's simple economics. Corvettes and Mustangs are accessible to many who can't afford a car like a GT. I think the Corvette stereotype is changing since the Corvette is now not only a proper sports car, but a great one at that. As a result, it is attracting critical sports car drivers. I have never owned a Corvette but I would buy a ZO6 in a heartbeat if I had the room (and I don't own any jewelry except my wedding ring which my wife insists I wear).

I agree... I guess the quirks is what I associate with the best....:cheers

FGT vs. Vette ZR1

How do you guys think the new Vette ZR1 compares to the FGT?

It seems like a stock ZR1 will out run a stock FGT based on the hp and torque numbers.

From an aesthetics standpoint the FGT IMHO is still way out in front.

Just interested in your thoughts.

IMO, expect a stock ZR1 to totally smoke a stock GT. In a launch situation, it would be much worse for the GT. The ZR1 is all about performance. At the end of the day, it will be the fastest Corvette ever, but the trade-off is...it's still a Corvette...I will own one. :cheers

I looked into buying one a while back, but the word is/was they'll be demanding ridiculous premiums for 'em. Congressional mileage dictates aside for the moment, GM intends to make these cars on an ongoing basis ... about 2,000 cars a year acc'ding to what I've read here & there, so they're hardly "limited production" in the same sense the GT was. As a result, I just don't "see" any justification for a huge prem.

Yes, I know, "let the mkt decide", etc., etc. I already decided about "the market" some time ago. I'll pass. The ZR1 just isn't radical looking enough to justify a 6 figure "exotic" price in my opinion, regardless of all the C.F. and so on. To me, a 'Vette will not be worth that kind of money until it's a mid-engine car. Admittedly, that's just a personal prejudice of mine.

Just MHO.

The prices will fall during the 2nd year of production, especially of the economy doesn't improve, by the 3rd year you should be able to buy a ZR1 below MSRP without any problems.

For Pockets a standard Vette would work just as well, since it will never leave the garage!

they are only making 2000 ZR1's. thats is it, no more. the ZR1 will be a very collectable car as far as vettes go. 30 years from now at the B-J the GT will be worth more $$$$$$$. stock for stock the ZR1 will be faster than a GT; but once you mod both cars the GT wins.
