Now that the dust over on the Vette forum has started to settle it is interesting to read the current takes. My impression is that as guys start to grasp the "position" that this car may be intended for, more and more are starting to appreciate the design. True, it is not the "track" car that many were expecting and hoping for. It may be more of a Grand Touring car, and at that it will be world class in my opinion. It is funny, many of them griped about how heavy it appears to be (3330 or so), and that is actually pretty light - it is just that the expectation was 2900 lbs, and no fully optioned car can do that. The more I think about the car, the more I like it.

Yeah, I definitely don't get the griping about the weight. The list of sub-3400 pound sports cars is extremely thin. Even at 3350, it's still lighter than the dedicated track version of the Viper. A car like the Lambo Superleggera ("superlight") that Lambo claims weighs 3k weighs over 3400 here on planet earth. You get to cars like the SLR or M6 and you're 3700-3900 pounds. People are freaking out saying "how can it handle with an extra 200 lbs"; a Nissan GT-R is getting automotive journalists worship for it's handling and it weighs almost 3900 lbs. 3350 is nothing, and I'm sure the car will ultimately come with around 650 hp. Should be Enzo fast.

I'm never going to get over the looks though. If they put that stuff on an Asian car the domestic crowd would be screaming bloody Ricer murder. :lol

Who's planning on buying one?

I am not yet decided myself on the looks. I like some things and the jury is still out on other parts. I hope this is one of those cars that really does look better in person.... I would try to buy one if funds allowed, but can't right now, and the markup will be huge I am guessing.

True, but we are spoiled by the existing Z06...mine, with headers replacing the stock manifolds, weighs 3100 lbs.

A car like the Lambo Superleggera ("superlight") that Lambo claims weighs 3k weighs over 3400 here on planet earth.

But it also offers AWD, something that the ZR-1 could really use at that power level with only 48% of its weight on the rear wheels.

I'm with you for sure....seems they outsourced the styling to RK Sport or Ecklers. I'd mostly want one for the fantastic magnetic ride suspension, but I'd have to get a normal looking hood and ditch the splitter and spoiler. :ack

I've been #2 on a local dealer list for about 3 years...behind Petunia who was responsible for creating the list at a local big volume dealer. Mine will go to Genaddi for a top chop, which IMO will considerably improve the looks.

I brave man for more reasons than one! Ask Bony if he wants your CF roof panel from your Vette. I am sure Genaddi can graft it on to Bony's GT, making the 1st high performance hybrid between a Ford and GM.

i still have my original zr1's
90 with 824 miles and a 91 with 1640 miles
it has taken 15 years and they still are not worth half what i paid for them
gm will never get it right
if you want to sell something special and different(viva gt), it has to look special and different
i think as with the previous zr1's they have missed the boat again !!!!

100% correct, but a ponder why you sold the GT, but still have 2 ZR1. Should have kept the GT and sold both ZR1s.

To each his own but I think the standard ZO6 is better looking by far. The squared off hood on the ZR1 is terrible and the plexiglass window is even worse.

Hey Sam....The C4 ZR-1's subtle widebody is my favorite modern corvette....far from the tacked on tackiness of the new ZR1.

....but the main attraction is not the collectibility, but the feel, sound, and look of the unique DOHC LT5 engine.

With a combined 2464 miles on both cars in 17 years....you have been depriving yourself of the greatest part of ZR-1 (or any sportscar) ownership.....driving enjoyment! Go fire up one of those LT5's and enjoy its 7000 rpm song! They are still amazing cars....kinda like a FGT sans blower.

Of course, if you want to make your money on a ZR-1...you'd have a better shot with a final year 95. They made wayyyy too many in 90 and 91.

{hindsight on} But you'd be better off still with an '87 GNX. Just look at how those things have ramped up! In 1990 you could've picked one up for 30k or less!

Anyway...I'm partial to the 90 Z's....PM me if you ever want to sell yours.

Regards,

Sanjay

Chiming innnn.... I don't get the vette thing... I mean... I get the car thing and the group thing and everyone should have hobbies and passions... Vettes are cool like stated here for driving... but the new ones won't be collectors.. will they? seriously? I unfortunately know more cheeseballs who own vettes then cool/normal people..

Now before I piss anyone off more.... I am the biggest cheeseball and the people here who own vettes are sure to not be or are cheesebally like me (in a good way) But my biggest question to you vette guys who know something I don't, is this..Why is it that most guys I see driving vettes have Mr. T starter kits around their neck and weave in and out of traffic trying to beat everyone to the red light while wearing clothes that are just 1-2 sizes too small for 'em? I am serious on that question....

And SAM (my man) !!! why did you sell a GT and hang on to two vettes... Tourists? Who cares? I look fwd to the day I have to wipe off ice cream from little timmy dripping on the car.. or posting a pic because my kid ran into her with his bicycle.... I will do my best to not let any of that happen... but it may.. and you know what? That's ok because I have a GT... yeah baby... mmm....mmmmm.mmmmmm good.

Yeah... but you know what I mean.... It seems we all love adding to our GT.. modding her, polishing her, cleaning her,CF-ing her, eventually this love will lead into FIXING her.... NO? I think its inevitable... not soon, but if we have 'em as long as I think we will.... eventually we will love really wrenching on 'em and trouble shooting problems... we'll have too, to pass on the info to whom ever inherits our wonderful women(GT's)

Keep in mind the same type of criticism can be leveled at the beloved Mustang. I think it's simple economics. Corvettes and Mustangs are accessible to many who can't afford a car like a GT. I think the Corvette stereotype is changing since the Corvette is now not only a proper sports car, but a great one at that. As a result, it is attracting critical sports car drivers. I have never owned a Corvette but I would buy a ZO6 in a heartbeat if I had the room (and I don't own any jewelry except my wedding ring which my wife insists I wear).
