Wouldn't it be interesting if the fastest Ford GT actually had a 4.6 Modular engine instead of a 5.4? I have a couple spares for my pro car that make 2300 hp. Smaller engine, 300 more horsepower and 100 lbs lighter.

Sounds like a good plan! :thumbsup

Not to piss on anyone's parade, but I have a serious question for all of you guys running over 200 mph in the mile. When are you going to get serious about safety?

I dont know about Ray's car and Johhny Bohner. But I do know that most of you dont have a rollcage or rollbar. Do you guys have arm restraints? Have any of you ever seen what the NHRA or Bonneville rulebooks require to run at speed much slower that what you guys are running?

Yes I know that you got a pass that the GT is safe up to a certain speed. But I can promise you that somebody is going to go for a ride, sooner than later. And when it happens, having some real safety equipment might mean the difference between a trip to the hospital or a trip to the morgue.

I've gone and done plenty of open road races with little to no safety equipment. I got 2nd place in the Elko twin 50's in a mostly stock Viper averaging 177 mph in a car that would only go 184 mph over a 55 mile run of nevada highway. So I have been on the other side of this debate. When you have a nice car who wants to cobble it up by putting in a rollcage etc. But the older I have gotten the more people i have seen killed or mamed from doing high speed racing in cars. Yes, this is the sport we have chosen and we are big boys and know the risks. But there is no excuse for not utilizing common sense safety equipment.

Some of the cars we are talking about here are going 50 mph faster than any Sprint Cup car is running at Daytona or Talladega. Have you ever seen how much safety equipment goes into a Cup car? Something to think about.

Again, sorry to interrupt the pissing contest (Chip i think you are way out in front). But you guys should seriously consider what I have said here. I dont think anyone on this forum wants to watch as their close friend dies in front of their eyes while trying to break the sound barrier at the next mile event.

boys - this man speaks the truth :thumbsup

and so does this man whose fighter jet i have flown before > http://www.youtube.com/user/FastFreddy488#p/f/34/0tQw9rnBZe8

John, Very well said, Let us not put SAFETY on the back burner behind TOP SPEED in the mile run competition. I want to keep my close friends safe and sound. As my wife says "the testosterone level gets way out of line when the GT Forum Group gets together on speed". Please keep it safe!. Tomy Hamon

Wow, that is a killer sound indeed. It reminds of a kid watching the Indy 500, it's the same sound!! Brings back memories of Andretti battling Mears, Fittipaldi, and the Unser boys for sure. Jackie Stewart Screaming "SPECTACULAR CRASH IN TURN 3 JIM"

i have those same memories too :thumbsup for me there has never been or never will be anykind of racing that has inspired me more than the Indy 500. back in 1994 right before the cart/irl split i watched Al Unser Jr. win the Indy 500 from the end of the pit row bleachers :bow that was when i went from being a spectator in the stands to a racer on the track :cool

but the Indy 500 racing i watched on tv as a kid back in the 70's and 80's was where it all started for me. i got my first motorcycle when i was 12 years old and rode the wheels off that thing every day after school. Evel Knievel was my hero. i had never experienced a freedom like that in my life ever and i don't ever want it to end either. so whatever you guys do make sure you don't kill yourself so you can live to ride another day :cheers

my favorite all time racers are AJ Foyt, Eddie Hill, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sr.

now i know that 3 out of 4 of these guys have never raced Indy cars but nonetheless these men are what real racers are all about to me. you can take all the fans out of the stands and all the money out the winners circle and these guys are still gonna be spending every dollar they have to break the sound barrier :usa

How about those south TX owners that often video their runs in Mexico, take a short trip to Juarez and video 10+ FGT running down the center of town. That would make the news!

I did not know this one. Cool Freddy! Does this mean Red really is the fastest color?

Ya know, I thin' ol' Pockets would prefer to "drive" a car at 700+ mph (or 267 for that matter!) from the comfort and SAFETY of an easy chair using a RADIO CONTROL BOX as a 'middle man'. After all, that arrangement seems to work flawlessly for Predator pilots, does it not? ('Don't think we've lost even ONE of them yet.) 'Know what I'm sayin'? :willy:willy:willy

And that way you never have to leave your garage. Similar to many of your cars.

I stand corrected.:lol Funny I remembered that Thrust car as being green, maybe because of the British racing green thing. Black it is.
I remember seeing the GT on display at SEMA that had crossed the finish line first at Le Mans, but because of where it had been further up on the starting line it was not awarded first place... I think that was the story.

I believe a couple things need to be pointed out however that are inarguable.

1. One-mile racing is in its infancy. The oldest and most experienced entity conducting this type of event is the Texas Mile.

The Maxton Mile has been around since 1997, the standing mile race at Sandhills Open Road Challenge since 2001. The Texas mile, as great as an event it is, did not begin until 2003.

Toolman,

Wow, this thread has been dead for 5 1/2 months but it's OK to bring it back for a bit. The Maxton Mile and the Sandhills Open Road Challenge do not allow cars like the Ford GT and most other Exotics (unless you're willing to cut them up installing roll cages, fuel cells, and a host of other mods) so I don't consider them to be the same type of event. For drivers like most of our Forum members driving fairly stock exotics, the Texas Mile is the oldest and most experienced entity conducting this type of event.

I should have looked at the date, sorry! Been some time since I visited here.

YEs, Texas has very very lenient safety standards as compared to Maxton. I would say SORC is in between, as you must have a roll bar to run the full mile there. But Vettes and GTs and other select vehicles are allowed to run the full mile without rollover protection, as the directors have deemed that certain cars have enough built in protection. But, even though I have a full cage, I will not run the Thiat SORC (only the half, where I will only see around 155), as the thin two lane blacktop is a little less forgiving than the wide runway at places like Goliad.

This Oct will be my first full mile run, and from the sounds of it, the Octobers Texas Mile is going to be very interesting!

You will love the Texas Mile. Registration is only 5 days away and it fills up very quickly. Ray Hoffman will be lighting up the runway in his 2000+ HP Heffner Twin Turbo yellow GT and I expect amazing speeds. See you there!
