Not a big deal David! I think the "infraction" thing is just part of the board software that is phrased to seem worse than it is. I don't know why they chose to call it that. All Bony wanted to do was let you know to try and keep it as much in one place as possible when he merged it into the mega-thread.

We love everyone here :banana:cheers

Damn right, made a member sad, I put on my tie dyed t shirt, drank some cheap wine, put flowers in my hair, headed to Golden Gate Park. 2007 will be the Summer of Love. Have arranged to get a Flower Power paint job on the FGT just like Janis did on her 365.

Hey, can't we all just get along?:party :club

Back on the broken bolt case.....I'll put in some time researching how other halfshafts are being attached to axles in other vehicles. If I find a similar design as ours I'll look into it further and maybe get some clues to a fix.

The kit includes the 2 inner bolts, a new washer and 6 outer bolts. X 2

The price is $199 and includes instructions with torque values.

Thanks

John

According to the measurements I took it might be possible to drill and tap two more threaded holes in the end of the axle shaft. This would give you 4 bolts instead of 2 holding the stuff together. I know the axle is heat treated metal but I'm sure it is drill and tapable. A simple drill fixture attached to the two existing screw threads should do the trick. The big worry would be breaking a drill or tap during the process. I have broken my fair share of drills and taps so I know the risk.

If the the bolts are breaking due to fatigue then these extra two screws might only provide minimal improvement. The two added bolts would also be further from the center than the existing two therefore being slightly higher loaded.

Any thoughts?

Here's a layout showing the possibility of adding two more M8 bolts.

Gimbal,

Thanks for the excellent drawing. I am ready to pull mine apart and it's very helpful to see what it looks like in there ahead of time! Jay

Question about safety-wiring . . .

I know that it is a common practice on things like helicopters and such. I know there has been some safety wiring used on the half shaft bolt repair kits, and I know that at typical driving speeds that it might go unnoticed, but could an imbalance be created that might cause problems at higher speeds?

Hi Pete,
A quick calculation shows at about 200 mph the rear wheel will be spinning at about 3000 rpm. With the safety wire so close to the center of rotation and the wire being very low in mass, it would be difficult to detect an imbalance.
A tiny rock in the grooves of the tire would create a much larger imbalance and that might not be detectable either.
