Why did production stop at 4,033?

Or 4,038 according to Wikipedia. "The production run of 4,038 GTs ended the 2006 model year on September 21, 2006, short of the originally planned 4,500." :shrug

According to Cobrajeff, the 5 Ford European demo cars are not included in the 4,033 number and were returned to the USA. Thus, the total number of production cars was 4.038.

Thanks for explaining the discrepancy. I have never seen an explanation of why they didn't hit 4,500. Sales were still strong through 2006. In fact the strongest sales month of 05-06 was November 06, two months after production ceased.

I believe this was due to the momentary halt in production early-on over the "A" arm issue. That halt put production behind schedule, and as I recall, the production "end date" was never pushed back/changed to accommodate the time needed to produce the full 4,500. So, by the time said "end date" rolled around, only 4,038 had been made...and that was that.

Anyway, that's how I remember it. If I'm all wet, I'm sure someone will...ahummmm...'clear the air'!

End of build date was set due to the Gov. change in safety requirements that were coming up in Nov. as I remember from earlier threads. The GT would not pass these requirements .

Now that you mention it, Tomy, I think you're right. That would make a lot more sense as far as 'casting the date in stone' is concerned. All I recall is that the end of production was date-certain and whatever number of cars were made by that date would be it. So, I guess the "A" arm delay in combo with date the new regs took effect worked hand-in-hand to mess up final production!

:thumbsup:thumbsup :cheers

That is what I heard - the safety regs cut them at the date the new regs became effective.

yeah - the new regs stopped us in the United States. That is why the final cars (that could be built passed the US date)
were all made for Canada.

But even those cars had special requirements like unique rear bumper config and day time running lights. At least they weren't right hand drive :)

Cool! Then there should be an extra 400 sets or so of gauges sitting in a warehouse. Oh wait, those will be the same as the disposable ones in my car now.:frown But really, this foreshortened production run must have created a greater spares inventory than was originally intended, at least on some parts, right?

They included a 5th option which included a special "Moosehead" bottle holder and a roof rack for hockey sticks.

Same speedo. English/French labels are on the airbag stickers.
Our gauges have 'symbols' (ie a picture of a fuel pump) rather than the word "FUEL" so they could avoid having to do English AND French on the gauge faces.

This is true as my GF (the bottle holder) holds the beers. And we got the roof rack option instead of the gun rack option..... :wink

What changes in government regulations killed the GT production?
