What would you rather have?

I tried to send PM's in order to not hijack this discussion but I do not have access for some reason.

I bought the Corsair in 1999 and after an engine fire in 2001 painted it in the 513th colors after a local pilot friend.

Rest of collection can be seen at aircombatmuseum.com

My GT should be done in 2 weeks so sorry no trade.

If anyone has information on how to get to my 10,000 rpm goal I would be interested in any advice. Once again I do not have access to send PM to you.

Thanks

Just stunning looking airplanes.
So for the big question and the reason for many a WWII bar fight, which was a better fighter the P51 or the F4U? My guess not many can say they own both so you are probably the right person to ask. My God Father flew F4U's in Korea and if you wanted to rial the guy up just tell him the Mustang was a better airplane.:lol Is it safe to say the F4 is faster?

I always wanted to know the answer to that question as well.

Normal power settings for P-51, 36 inches manifold pressure, 2400 rpm, 60 gph, indicated airspeed 270mph, or 235 knots, true airspeed 308 mph
Corsair 30 inches, 2000 rpm, 85gph, indicated speed 210 knots.
This is why the P-51 has been widely accepted as such an important tool in winning the war, 5.13 mpg verses 2.8 for the Corsair. The P-47 and Hellcat were much worse then the Corsair, and the P-40 didn't hold much fuel.

Mustang is a lot more like a race car and there are several dark corners that will kill you in a split second, Corsair is like a big BMW, handles great but you know it is much larger then the P-51. Corsair has an older design wing and is more forgiving of errors but tougher in a crosswind.

Everyone I ever knew who had both and had to sell one sold the Corsair first. Mine will never be for sale, the dream of owning them has been with me for 42 years.

Interesting and honest from someone solidly in one camp.

But the question still lingers, which (in original form) had the higher performance in speed (in a dive too) and handling?

I have been told the P-47 was the all out fastest of the four and of course modified, we see all the P-51s and of course there is Rare Bear.

Is Worry Bird yours as well?

F4UDriver, about your question regarding a vehicle with a V10 or V12 that can hit 10,000 RPMs, just get a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. Pretty easy solution to that quest. What Ferrari or Lambo is up to your tastes. There are plenty of members here who can help you pick out the right Ferrari or Lamborghini.

I'd still trade you my wife's Freestyle. Come on. You know you want it.

More Corsair porn for Friday...

I purchased Worry Bird in 1989 when I was 27 years old and I rate relative speed by what I have found to be the brick wall they seem to hit were more diving and more throttle just doesn't seem to add more speed. The Mustang will easily hit 300 knots or 360 mph and I have had it faster then that. The Corsair hits a real brick wall at 260 knots and it really doesn't want to go any faster. The speeds you see quoted in literature are true air speeds at altitude. The max speed for both are real close but that is at 35,000 feet plus were the 2300 HP of the Corsair and the thin air evens out against the 1500 HP of the Mustang. I have not flown the P-47 or F-6 but my friends who have quote 180 knots in cruise. I have flown the Spitfire and the Sea Fury, The spit is about 200 knots and the Sea Fury is 260 plus by far the fastest of them all. So of the real WW2 fighters the P-51 was the fastest when it counted not just full throttle at altitude.

So far I have talked to Paul at Rousch and he felt he could build a Chevy LS motor to do 10,000 rpm but I really want more cylinders. I called a the guy who services my Countach (Evans) asking about the Gallardo and his initial reaction was that it would be unreliable. I am the type of person who will put up with more issues then most to get the performance I would like to have. I currently have a Mosler with a 820 HP Duttweiler motor and a triple disc lightweight clutch and flywheel. This makes for some difficult starts off the line but the rev potential is worth it. What got me on to this kick is my local mechanic working on his ex nascar motor and I believe it will rev that high as well.

I am open to any suggestions or advice from the experience here.

Once again sorry for changing the subject. When I saw the Corsair reference I just had to chime in.

There is nothing that I would rather have than my GT.

But if the GT had never been built, I would have a Z8 in the garage.

Probably the best car I have ever owned, but not as much fun as the GT.

A 2003 aston martin vanquish...black with pumkin orange interior.......red calipers and a cd player with 007 songs....gtjoey1314

I loved my 4 days with a Aston Martin V8 Vantage, during a recent photo shoot with Miss California.

It wasn't very fast, but it was definitely fun.
