You have to realize that there is a significant relationship with guys who love a fine automobile and a fine watch. They are almost one and the same. If you can appreciate the fine mechanical workmanship on a car, you would also appreciate the same on a fine watch.

Couldn't agree more. I always will wear a fine watch but don't like wearing other jewelry, not even a wedding ring.

Try watch collecting...you just might catch the bug!

On my first trip to Switzerland I was going to buy a watch I had my eye on. But it was half that price in the states. (I guess store clerks over there get a living wage.) That was the last decent watch I bought. After that it was cheap ones that could time laps at the track and wake me up to catch a flight.

I would have never compared a car to a watch, but I can see how some could. But apparently todays young people don't see the need for watches as sales have plummeted. I don't wear any jewelry and a watch falls in that category to me. But to each their own!

Guys,

Love your collections. They sound amazing. It is nice to know I'm not the only crazy one out there. As for winders; Any expert watch technician will tell you that once the mechanism has been wound it should stay wound. Allowing the mechanism to start and stop wears out the watch sooner. That's why there is such a market for auto winders, and yes they have battery operated ones as well.

By the way, you don't have to spend thousands of dollars on winders. I have a friend that has one that holds 20 watches and cost him 30K. I have the table top top winders with three heads that watch makers use and they cost me $300. I keep all my autos wound at all times. It saves on repair bills. By the way, one repair bill cost me $3,000 and 4 months to come back from the manufacturer!

That's because I usually don't have my watches on regular maintenance. Bad move, you should always have your watches maintained. I had to learn the hard way!

Wow. I'd love to see a photo of that collection. Did you buy them all at once?

The Watch

Both myself & Mrs. Spirit have been wearing Rolex watches since the 60's.
Great pieces with classic design; kinda like the GT.

Yes, it came as a complte set with a bit of written background on each mission. The case has porthholes ala the space capsule with this bitchin white coated astronaut type matyerial. I think I paid 35k for it...who knows what it is worth now. None ever worn. Should I ebay the entire collection?

Glashutte is one of the finest watches made. The Saxony region has produced a handful of fine German Watchmakers that make amazing movements.

-Glasutte
-A.Lange Sohn
-Union Glashutte
-Tutima

Like Zenith, GLashutte is not well known in the USA but has a long Lineage in Europe.

The Glashutte Senator is a milestone watch.

Bought one of them recently. For those int'd in what they look like, see pics here - http://s124.photobucket.com/albums/p24/redrocket_photos/?sc=1&addtype=local

I buy and sell them as a hobby because it's fun and profitable. The only ones I've kept are a Breitling Chronomat (blue face) because it's the first watch I really lusted for; and my regular watch is a solid gold submariner, because it's tough as nails,

and

it weighs about 2 pounds, so it balances out my right arm when I'm hoisting a frosty pint! (that way I don't tip over)

Funny I have been here for over a year, and this is the 1st substantial watch discussion, there have been a few references here and there, but this is interesting. It is FRIGHTING how much $ you can tie up in timepieces. But just like cars, you buy them right, and the right stuff, they will not loose value, some will even grow. Fun stuff.....

Wow. I've never heard of such a set. You definitely have to keep that.

Would love to see a picture of the case and watches as an entire collection.

Breitling Bentley..............

EP,

Looked it up on the internet. VERY nice looking watch. No.....does not look too over the top. Very pleasing. I like it. More of a "dress" watch. I'm hard on watches that's why I wear a stainless band and the Breitling brand.

Close friend is the largest Breitling dealer in the Southwest.....up in Phoenix. 480-706-1850. Area code is correct. Ask for Jason.......tell him "BB" said to call.

Bony wants to start a Pen thread. Any toy collectors want to talk car collections???

I just upload to photobucket for free, then I post the URL here, and voila, instant pics.

Well, not instant, since it takes a little while to upload to photobucket.

But fairly painless process.

Maybe it's not such a good idea to post our watch collections with a safecracker on the site!:willy But since he's 1500 miles away...

8 Rolexes:
President with custom dial
3 Subs of various configurations inc. 50th Ann. model
stainless Daytona
Gold Daytona
Yachtmaster
GMT Master

2 Breitlings:
2 tone Chronomat w/ blue dial
Stainless Navitimer

2 Chronoswiss:
18k Opus skeleton
2 tone Tora

Jaeger World Time

Dubey & Schaldenbrand

Tag Steve McQueen Monaco

18k Rose Gold Girard Perregaux on a black strap

Zenith Grand Port Royale

And right now I'm wearing a Martin Braun Eos on a black strap. I wear them all except the 50TH Ann. Rolex. I think it's ugly with the green bezel but I bought it as a collector.

Oh, my wife has a Gold Rolex Lady's President with mother of pearl dial and diamond bezel plus a gold Baume Mercier with diamonds. I think I got off cheap!!:biggrin

I went through a watch frenzy too but I think I'm pretty much over it. I think I've got enough to last me my lifetime (and my son when he inherits them).
