Just received another letter on the air bag recall. I had mine replaced about 2 months ago. This is to have it replaced again . But the interesting part is it also recalls the driver air bag on my 2011 ShelbyGT 500 Mustang.
So - 2 vehicles in same letter, both driver side only, when parts become available.

Anybody know if Ford will service/replace the air bag on an extra steering wheel?

It's not the bag itself but the inflator canistor which I believe is in the steering column. If the canister is in your part then I'd suggest you contact your service guy. I'd wait for the last fix since the first one just does a reissue of the old part (that will eventually fail again). The latest recall is "parts not available" until they get it all sorted out.

A forewarning:
I had the inflators replaced on our two GT's a couple of months ago. To access the inflators there's a screw on either side of the steering column that have to be removed, then the horn switch /airbag cover lifts off. The screw heads are hidden behind plastic caps that need to get pried off first. The mechanic, whether knowingly or not, broke some of the retaining tabs on 3 of the 4 covers. I didn't find this out until I found one of them on the floormat, and then found that two others fell off with just a little tap with my finger. By the way the local dealer arranged for one of their mechanics to come out to the house (but only after I showed them the statement on the Ford internal recall notice for covering off site travel). He changed out both cars in less than an hour and was very careful (I watched him do the work) so I was happy with the job - until I found the broken caps. The dealer ordered new caps at no charge once I went in and showed them the pieces, which was a very good thing 'cause those little half-dollar size pieces consisting of maybe 5 cents of plastic have an absolutely outrageous price of $42 ea. (an educated guess of a 1,000X markup)! Instead of installing them I’ve decided to hang on to those new caps until the second recall comes around and I have go through this again, but as an FYI you may want to fiddle with those caps on the steering column once your inflator gets replaced, and if they fall out you’ll see that some of the retaining tabs on the inside face are broken off. Had I not found this right away I may have been paying $130 for 15 cents worth of parts to replace what the dealer broke.

Jim, what dealer/service department did you use?

Sounds like Ford better put in an order for a good supply of plastic caps, to go along with the change-out of the cannisters!

Thanks for the heads-up, Jim (& I still love my splash guards!!!)

Can you post photos of the plastic caps? Are they the column shrouds that have a top and bottom half?

I had Sill-Terhar Ford from Broomfield do the work, they're just ten minutes away. Here's a picture of a new cap. May be hard to see but there's three barbed tabs and one longer tab for clocking. The part no. is 4G7V-3L518-AAW-M1F3A.
(anyone see the value of a good steak dinner in there?)

Thanks very much jbyrnes for the very helpful and photographic information!
This type of information helps all us owners.

Andy, I got the same Ford recall letter covering both my cars as well.

The ford tech that did my air bag inflator replacement was already aware of the delicate nature of the screw access caps. Before he did the job I asked him was there any difficulty in the work and stated only pulling the screw access caps with out damaging them.

I found one of the caps under my seat after I had my car for two years. Never noticed one was missing. One tab was broken. It is now held in place with two tiny drops of superglue. No big deal.

I'd be surprised if these caps are unique to the GT. Does the GT share steering column parts with other models?

I got my recall notice today ( funny, I thought the late builds didn't need it - mine is 06 #1853). Anyone recommend a Dealer in Houston who won't screw things up? I've always done my own work on the car so have never used a Dealer here.

The late builds didn't need it on the first recall. Now those who got new cans on the first recall need to get new cans on the second recall.

Dang near impossible to screw things up for the driver air bag. Except for breaking the plastic bolt cap tabs. And I don't think there are any plastic bolt cap tab removal experts. These are 10 year old cheesy pieces of plastic. I doubt they were engineered to be reused. Were the plastic cap engineers supposed to anticipate Takata? :)

Today I got two letters. One for the GT drivers side, and other for my 2014 GT500.

The second letter was a surprise. I had not checked it's serial number. It's my daily driver so I hope the dealer has the part. Part of me says I should be OK in the Shelby for a while as its barely 2 yrs old and MO climate is not like the Gulf Coast. Still a cause for some concern though. Any other Shelby owners get the letter!

Sorry, as they said on Seinfeld, "No Soup For You". The parts for the July 2015 recall are marked as "solution not available" in the recall notice and are on indefinite backorder.

Any other Shelby owners get the letter!

A Mustang is a Mustang, and all makes and models that used Takata components are getting the recall.

My 2004 Dodge RAM 1500 shows a recall but I still haven't gotten the letter.

You wanna know the truth? You can't handle the truth.

In the 60's people died in car wrecks. If you drove stupid you might not make it.

Now our mission is to keep idiots safe from themselves. If you drive stupid that's OK, you're surrounded by bubble wrap. Maybe we should include a little shrapnel every once in a while just to thin the herd.

P.S. Beautiful car in a beautiful setting.
