A forewarning:
I had the inflators replaced on our two GT's a couple of months ago. To access the inflators there's a screw on either side of the steering column that have to be removed, then the horn switch /airbag cover lifts off. The screw heads are hidden behind plastic caps that need to get pried off first. The mechanic, whether knowingly or not, broke some of the retaining tabs on 3 of the 4 covers. I didn't find this out until I found one of them on the floormat, and then found that two others fell off with just a little tap with my finger. By the way the local dealer arranged for one of their mechanics to come out to the house (but only after I showed them the statement on the Ford internal recall notice for covering off site travel). He changed out both cars in less than an hour and was very careful (I watched him do the work) so I was happy with the job - until I found the broken caps. The dealer ordered new caps at no charge once I went in and showed them the pieces, which was a very good thing 'cause those little half-dollar size pieces consisting of maybe 5 cents of plastic have an absolutely outrageous price of $42 ea. (an educated guess of a 1,000X markup)! Instead of installing them I’ve decided to hang on to those new caps until the second recall comes around and I have go through this again, but as an FYI you may want to fiddle with those caps on the steering column once your inflator gets replaced, and if they fall out you’ll see that some of the retaining tabs on the inside face are broken off. Had I not found this right away I may have been paying $130 for 15 cents worth of parts to replace what the dealer broke.
