The new old

I planned on putting in a five-speed when I bought mine, but they don’t need it; four speeds are enough. The only question is what gearbox is in it now? It’s an early car so you should have the terrible Moss gearbox with no synchro on first but.....you say it’s got a 4.2 motor, so maybe they put in the matching all-synchro box with it? If it’s still the Moss then I’d say change it out - originality doesn’t matter because of all the other modifications on the car. If it’s the later box, drive it for a bit and you’ll probably find (like I did) that the four speed is just fine.
The car has the 4.2 with the synchro gear box

Any idea which is best?
It's been a long time since I worked on a Jag, so I'd suggest you pursue that with the Jag Club guys who have done the swap.

I just spoke to one of the four most experts, who actually doesn’t live too far from me. He’s going to replace the rear end gear.

That may help, but knowing you, I'm pretty sure you're going to want a 5-speed box eventually. That's why I recommend you do that in the first place. Put that money towards the 5-speed upgrade.

Yuo’re a man of impeccable taste Ron (although I think the coupes are prettier)
Hey I remember that car! Looks even better than when I saw it. Must be the southern light.
