Tesla in the real world...

A few years ago, Tesla did an endurance trip from L.A. to Seattle.

Chase vehicle had diesel gen. set. Trip north took 2 days, which is pretty normal for 1,200 miles.

w/o generator "on board", that trip would have taken 4 days. Using household 110v. to re-charge is very time consuming.

If they put the generator in the trunk they wouldn't have to stop at all. :lol

Got my Performance S on Monday. Out and about all day yesterday. My eMPG was about 80. Used $2.60 of electricity in 50 miles, romping on it any chance I got. Ran several errands shopping and had at least 8 conversations with people about the car. One kid thought it was a Maser, another a Jag, another a Porsche. Car accelerates like a freight train. Edmunds got a 1 foot roll out of 0-60 of 4 flat and a standing start 4.3. Motor Trend did 3.9 standing. Not bad for 4700#s. Its been run up against an M5 and was quicker. I have 2 Ford GT's and had a Stradale and this car turns in and corners very similarly with the steering on sport mode. It's CG is 16" off the ground and has been compared to the GT in that regard. All the weight is in the floorboards with the battery pack. Electric motors make instant torque and with TC on you just plant it and go. Obviously the car has no top end like an ICE car but the power and acceleration is in the useable end from 0-100. The e-motor spins at 17K rpms at 125 mph where it is limited. My major maintenance cost is going to be tires, the way I drive! Ride quality is supple on the Michellin PS2's. Lots of rough roads in Fort Worth but driving around town was smooth and comfortable.
As for the interior, this is my first luxo sedan so my point of reference is limited vs. MB, Lexus, Jag, Infinity, etc. I sat in a Fisker once and it seemed cramped due to the center tunnel where the batteries reside. Can't remember much about the appointments on the Fisker, but the Tesla has alcantara and leather, nice stitching and tons of space. I have lacewood accents, but other wood trim and CF are available. The ambient lighting and touch screen are way cool. 5 people fit easily with no center tunnel. Massive storage space in the Frunk (front trunk) and the rear hatch.
I'm happy with my purchase so far. No electric glitches, etc.

Yeah Bozo, so where's the pictures? They had none at the Chicago auto show that I saw. Did see one Fisker.

First I gotta shave the top of my head and get some red hair coloring (Bozo reference). Then I'll unplug it, take it outside and take some good pics...

10.5 cent per kwh. Fixed rate day or night. Some people only charge at nite when rates are lower. There's a software update coming so you can set charging times.

...Car accelerates like a freight train....

You might want to change your example - - - have you ever seen a freight train accelerate? I certainly wouldn't use that to imply quickness!

I meant it pulls like a freight train. Accelarates like a cheetah?

Went to Cars and Coffee in Dallas today. 135 miles round trip. 35 degrees. Drove 70+ mph most of the way. Lots of interest in the car. No "range anxiety"...had 50 miles of range left when I got home. I suspect if it was warmer my battery consumption would have been lower.

I just picked up a tesla S 85P this week. My wife and I are really enjoying it. Took it up the coast yesterday, we stop in Malibu and saw 2 GT's pulling into cross creek, one flat black and the other tungsten.

Drove one a few weeks ago to see what the hoopla was all about ( skeptical) and now I have a Model S 85p on order. - The power off the line and even at the 60-100 mph range is surprising for heavy four door, the interior is very well finished. the customer feedback & loyalty is light years ahead of others, the technology throughout is really outstanding and from what I have read in forums, the news and heard... their customer service is incredibile. But the best part is this new car and technology is U.S.A. made - that said... I still love my GT MORE :)

In fairness, it takes years of real world use, failure and development for new technologies like these to mature. Consumer participation provides an important funding source to make it all happen. Marketing will always lay claim to the moon, but this stuff is here to stay and it's coming on fast.

It took Ford 100 years to get it right with the GT.......cut them some slack. They are just starting out.

Just drove I- 70 from Vail Co. to Pittsburgh in 2 drive days of about 12 hrs each. No trailer just my 20014 F-150 Eco Boost Truck. The mileage not so good with the Max Trailer Tow axle..(about 15 mpg) . Cruised at about 85 mph and ran into snow and ice storms in Co. and in Ohio/ West Va. Many, many smaller cars and trucks in the ditch. Eighteen wheelers crowding the center lane and stopping at the "Chain-up stations" especially near Vail Pass.. Very cold and salty slush everywhere. A rugged environment.
But with the F-Series, 36 gallon fuel tank, 560 mile range , 4 WD and a good set of tires, I never have any range-anxiety or worry about not being able to go where I want , when I want ...unless I get caught in a 50 car/truck pileup ...like on the Ohio Turnpike . But then...everyone is stuck, not moving , trying to keep warm , using fuel .
I guess each vehicle has its plusses and minuses, but for me I never want to worry about range or bad weather...

GT's are great - Trucks are great (Raptor) , motorcycles are great and the Tesla is great ....all in their own unique way.... Why choose ;) ... Believe me, no one was more skeptical than me coming from a long history of muscle, vintage and performance cars.. then I drove one..

I've had my Tesla P85 for over a year. Great car. No problems. Comfortable. Reliable. Fast in the usable range of city and highway speeds. I love the touch screen.
