I started this thread in late fall 2009 because I had a problem which for me was very "unusual". I still love the my GT even if the tach is boxed up and laying on my passengers seat:eek The GTGuys will be in town 3/19 and I expect they will be able to tell me what is wrong:confused In the mean time when I get in and start my GT it is like going back to my childhood and racing my Ford GT slot car:banana But this time I'am in the real deal:thumbsup

Looking forward to seeing you again in "TWO WEEKS":banana

Billy,
We will all be very interested in what the GT guys have to say. Let us know what they think. I'm at a loss as to what to do right now with guages.

Thanks,
Rick

You have a great perspective and I am sure that will help you get some positive resolution soon. Good luck with the GT guys. :cheers

I came across this forum looking to see if there were any issues with the fuel level sensor that I worked on specifically for the GT and found all these issues you guys are having with the tach. I figured I could try and help you with this problem. I am working on getting a working tach from a source I have. The only thing is I will also need one that isn't working to figure out if it can be fixed. If anyone has a removed non-working tach they could send me I would be willing to look into fixing it.

Resolving the Tach Problem

I would have provided mine but the internals have already been updated with VDO components. There are others that could probably accommodate your thoughtful gesture.:thumbsup

GASgaugetech, my fuel gauge went out last September. I filled up with gas at a station with about a 30 degree down angle (didn't have a choice). Gauge acted funny after that, and two weeks later went completely dead. Bought new gauge on my dime and had GTGuys replace at Rally IV in Texas. Any help to you? Gauge was accidently left in Dallas at fellow members house. New gauge did fix problem and has worked perfectly.

The reason after the fill it acted funny is because after initial startup the level sensor a Piezo (similar to the back up ones) did not get a signal. If you went to a flat surface and restarted it, most likely would have gone to full. Almost any time you guys fill and it takes a long time to go up to full it is because it didn't get a good initial reading. Over filling would cause this to because the sensor needs an air gap to measure. Then I am pretty sure it gets averaged so it takes a little while to go back up. As for the guage going bad 2 weeks after that it must have been a coincidence. It would be nice to get that gauge too it probably failing because of the same reason the tach is.

Curiosity has got the better of me, how does the piezo find an air gap when the sensor is mounted in a position where the top of the tank above the sensor is the lowest point of the tank, ie the middle of the tank where the sensor and pumps are mounted is the lowest point of the tank, see photo attached.
The peizo sender I think is the round peice with the yellow wire to the side of the pump unit
any comments would be welcomed.
I DON'T WANT TO HIJACK THIS THREAD SO IF YOU THINK THIS SHOULD MOVED TO ANOTHER THREAD PLEASE DO SO

The photos are confusing in terms of the "ship in a bottle" concept.

Sorry VIPERJOE
I have cut my tank in half to see what was inside and get the pump module out, because I made a 120 litre tank for racing, and made a new tunnel to fit it in I didn't need the original tank.

You should probably move it to another thread but... This sensor isn't measuring the air it is measuring the fuel so you need it at the lowest point. It just needs air to send a signal back. Like sonar. "Ship in the bottle" was the whole skeleton fuel module and all was molded over with the tank. Most tanks are just molded and everything put inside this had everything inside and the tank was molded over it.

I don't want to be an alarmist, but note the two assemblies, one in the front and one at the rear of the tank. They are called jet-pumps that feed the main 2 turbine pumps that feed the engine. In total there are 3 jet-pumps. It appears that the main 2 turbine pumps and a single jet-pump in the center are serviceable items via the center hole; however the 2 jet-pumps at either end are not. That implies that failures of either will require a entire gas tank assembly.

I wonder what the cost of that is!

In comparison, it may make the tach seem like a real bargain.

Torrie?

Love the giant sized text. Retail on the tank is $ 4062.62

Thanks Torrie! That truly is a bargain compared to the tachs and headlights! I suspect the hoarders will now cause the prices to go up!

Ice, the cost of the tank is nothing compared to the cost of the labor on this one. The whole center of the car has to be dismantled.

I never took one out, but it seems that you just take off the center silver colored belly pan, disconnect the wiring and hoses and it should drop right out.

And drain both cooling systems and disconnect the brake lines to "position out of way" both of the tunnel bundles, and remove the front crossmember, splitter, T pan, and engine belly pan then it comes out.
Then if one gives you trouble the speaker, center console, shifter, and access panel comes out from the inside.

OK, then, Rich. Piece of cake, sounds like a DIY project. :lol

Well I guess if I ever need that done, my FGT will get shipped to Shadowman.
