stock clutch versus aftermarket...

Not sure how much longer my stock clutch is gonna last here. is the OE clutch still available to purchase from Ford and if so how much does it cost? If not what are the aftermarket clutches available and how do they compare to the stock clutch and how much do they cost? Also how many hours does it take for a Ford dealer to install the clutch...

I have had my GT serviced by certified Ford GT techs at 3 different Ford dealers in 2 different cities in the state of Arizona over the last 17 years and have never had a problem with the work paid for. I would be interested to know from those who have had problems what was the deal? My biggest concern about having anybody work on my car is theft of parts. The driver/passenger weight limit sticker disappeared from the door frame of my car at a stealership. So i am gonna replace it with a no fat chix sticker, ha ha. Somebody could even swap a part on your ride for an inferior one. I got a flat tire on the freeway once and got towed to the nearest Ford dealer for a new tire. This dealer does not employ Ford GT techs. The tire had to be ordered so my car was at this dealer for a couple days. When I got the car back it had an extra 30 miles on the odometer.

Stillen and Spec no longer making a clutch for the GT. OEM takes some patience to track down.

Me personally? I had small gauges replaced by an authorized dealer. They managed to damage the binnacle and rip the leather on the lower dash panel.

Airbag recall, first it took months to convince them a Mustang part wasn’t acceptable. Then with me standing right There, they set my airbag assembly, face down on top of a filthy workbench and would have proceeded to wrestle the actuator out if I hadn’t stopped them And insisted a clean towel be placed underneath.

You can search dealers experiences here. If your experience is different than mine, I am happy for you (the extra 30 miles would not fly for me).

I would personally prefer a specialist for something as big as a clutch.

Contact GT101 to see if he has the clutch you need. Stillen is the way to go. My experience 80,000+ before replacement.

I have assisted a GT Technician in two 05/06 clutch replacements. Takes a couple of days. Not that difficult other than stabbing the transaxle back into motor. Alignment of motor and transaxle is difficult. Would inquire if GT Technician has done a few of these before trusting technician.

Partsman - do the shifter cables have to be disconnected to do this?

Yes, at the transaxle shifter cables are disconnected. The transaxle is removed from car in order to access the clutch and flywheel at the back of the motor.

The reason I ask is because more than one mechanic has told me that my shifter cable is stretched. This happened the very first day when I bought the car as I left it in first gear when I towed it 1300 miles home inside the trailer. You are supposed to tow with cars in neutral. Anyway the trans sticks when trying to get into first from neutral at a stop or when downshifting from 2nd gear into 1st and it has gotten worse over time. As a result I have never had a problem shifting from 1st to 2nd gear even when cold as so many others have. Maybe this is a good thing, ha ha. I figure I will kill 2 birds at the same time and have the cable replaced when the clutch is replaced. After further reasearch on this site I would either get a stock clutch or a stillen.

RE: cables....a Loong time ago I had shifting issues. Ended up that the jacketing had melted inside the V of the motor. we ordered a nw cable set. I got a call from Ford from the man that put the cables together. He said never try and adjust them. I make sure they are perfect before we ship them. Never had an issue since then.

2112 - Yes. Cables are still available. Apparently there are two of them? A left hand one and a right hand one...

Yes, there are two cables. I also seem to recall there was some kind of adjustment near the shifter. I remember seeing something about it when I put in the short-throw shifter but I didn't have to move anything. I don't know if that would compensate for the problem you have or not.

I have the B&M short throw shifter. It made no difference. I am gonna buy new shifter cables.

This makes no sense to me. There would be no stress on the shifter cable.

The Stillen clutch is the only clutch we only we wouldn't recommend - having installed all of the brands, many times. The Stillen was the only one that adapted a clutch from a different application and used a questionable spacer in order to get the throwout bearing to function correctly. The OEM clutch is a great clutch for wheel HP at or below 800. Above 800, the OEM clutch is not really a viable solution and, historically, SPEC offered a couple of different solutions that worked well... at the expense of a LOT more pedal pressure.

Re-mating the transaxle to the engine is a cinch if you prepare properly. We use a pair of 4" dowel pins that we temporarily thread into the engine. This allows the transaxle to be in alignment as it slides into place and the only adjustment is up/down which can be achieved by monitoring the gap between the block and bellhousing. Finally, with the transmission in gear, it's easy enough to rotate an output shaft to get the input shaft splines to mesh. Easy-peasy.
