Shadowman and Kip's "VERY" cool Double Din

This thread is one that shares what was accomplished as well as great appreciation for him doing so.

Long ago Kip and I began a dialog regarding the creating of a proper OEM style double din radio surround and here over a year later we have “Proof of Life”.

I can share (and Kip will certainly concur) that I was relentless in my conversations with my friend Kip as such even with his exhausting work load he worked this project into his mix. I have been fortunate to be a part of the process and received the first carbon fiber unit for evaluating and testing prior to it being made for prime time and then I also received the first cast aluminum piece which can be seen below as it is presently being made ready to be integrated into an anxiously awaiting gal.

There is no doubt in my mind that this was IMO a scope and magnitude project; a project that many would have walked away from however Kip remained focused and the results are wonderful and speak volumes about the Kip the person and Kip the craftsman.

Today I was told that for those folks that have been waiting for theirs that the day is near as both the carbon fiber and the cast aluminum pieces will be shipping as early as next week.

For those of you that have considered integrating a full featured radio/entertainment head unit in your gal this is IMO exactly what the doctor ordered. It was designed around the latest Pioneer Z series that has touch screen, hard drive based navigation, bluetooth , XM/Sirius, iPod, etc and then today I was told by Kip that he is creating brackets that will accommodate at least one other head unit option.

Kip; you did great job my friend and for this I thank you very much.

This Pioneer (hard drive system) is no longer in production. I'm hoping some others will fit.

I´m amazed of all the trick high quality parts you guys come up with, but in regard to music in my car - everytime I turn on the McIntosh - I turn it off right away again as I have have experienced how it interferes with the great sound of my car:biggrin

How about hot wiring an Ipod touch w 32 gig of storage or an Iphone 3gs to a touch screen that fits that then wiring the audio outs to the amp and then wiring in a WiFI receiver/data card so you can put GPS into play. That way you can have nav, audio, video and internet in the car?

No I am NOT joking here. If someone can do that .... I'm in both feet. I'll take two.

Thanks! Every time I think something is the same size it ends up being different. They must of had problems with the hard drives since they discontinued it and no one else offers a hard drive that I know of. Can't wait to get my DD in. I guess I will put the original mirror back and direct the reverse camera to the Pioneer. Maybe I'll put it in the Viper.:banana

Hi John

I have been using the Pioneer Z series now for several years in an H1 of all things and can share that it has been "flawless"

I started with the Z1 and have migrated through the Z2 and then the Z3 and without question would recommend it to all.

IMO I would say that Pioneer dropping the hard drive was likely a cost measure because I have heard of no significant issues with it. Now Kenwood loads Garmin off a Sim card and as for others I do not know.

Pure conjecture on my part. I have a Kenwood 8120 just waiting to be installed. If it proves not to fit I will go with the Pioneer. Like I said it's odd no one would pick up the ball on the hard drives and continue using them. I think the new thing will be big solid state drives.:thumbsup

The only downside to flash is the cost and number of write cycles before death.

The 8120 is IMO a wonderful unit; I have it in another vehicle. It is similar in design and operation when compared to the Pioneer Z series and then the software and the Nav are different so being drawn to one over the other IMO is subjective as they both work very nice.

Thanks for your input. I read where someone here turns off his stereo because the sound of the engine is all he wants to hear. I think that the music sets the stage, and wop allows the trumpets to be heard as they should. I really enjoy your input and thanks again.
