Results!

Note that cars that were included had to have factory claimed top speed of 200, so that left out the ZO6, the 959, and many others that came close.

Note the tiny numbers of the famous Enzo and Veyron and large numbers of Lambos and Ford GTs.

If I left any thing off or got it wrong, let me know.

Obviously this number is now lower because of wrecks.

I don't think any production BMW has ever gone over 200. Their fit and finish would prevent that from occurring.

You are right, but for the wrong reason. Most, if not all, BMWs have their speed limiter set to 155mph. Now a BMW engine has powered a Mclaren to over 200 mph.

SSC Ultimate Aero

You have to add the SSC Ultimate Aero which now claims to be the fastest car in the world at 257 MPH.

You are correct Slow Poke.

SSC announced they had broken the speed record for the world's fastest production car with 256.18 mph (412.28 km/h) in West Richland, WA on September 13, 2007. The reported record speed came from an average of two runs in opposite directions, in accordance with Guinness Book of World Records rules. The first run clocked 257.44 mph (414.31 km/h) and the return trip 254.91 mph (410.24 km/h). The results of this test, verified by Guinness World Records on October 9, 2007, gave the SSC Ultimate Aero the title of world's fastest production car, with a top speed of 256.18 mph (412.28 km/h).[19] This beat the previous record holder, the Bugatti Veyron, that has a top speed of 253.81 mph

...........world's fastest production car...........

"Production car" seems like a bit of a stretch.

I agree although a number of the cars in the list are pretty low production and the Ultimate Aero is still being produced and upgraded most years. They just came out with a new version as I understand.

Should we add M5 and M6?

The BMW M5 and M6 are electronically limited to 155, but top out at 205 with it removed.

I think about 20,000 have been produced of both since 2004.

If I add them they alone will almost double the number.

If you add those two, then all the AMG '55 and especially the '65 series cars have the power to go 200, though they have a second limiter set at 187 mph that I understand is a bit trickier to bypass.

However, a better case can be made for the SL65 Black Series, which is limited to 199 mph electronically. There are 350 of those in the world, and 175 of them are US models.

Ok, since the factory limited the M Series and the AMG SL cars top speeds, I guess that makes them ineligible since the companies don't claim a 200 mph top speed.

However the RUF Porsches do claim over 200 mph.

RUF CTR 911. 211. 29
RUF CTR2 911. 215. ?
RUF CTR3 911. 235. 35

Persons "of a certain age" have to sit in wonderment regarding all the above...'cause THEY can remember a time when the only cars that'd do 200 MPH were found at Bonneville - 'NEVER found driving around on the street...not to mention being daily drivers! (Today a "200 MPH Patch" from the salt flats somehow just doesn't quite have the panache it once did.)

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah, th' good ol' daze...sorta!:biggrin

Actually one doesn't have to be as ancient as EP to be amazed by today's performance cars. I grew up in the era of the 5.0 Fox Mustangs, when Detroit was in th early days of its performance renaissance. When the SEFI roller cammed 5.0HO came out in 1986 with 200 HP, that was a fast ride! Five years later, the 375 HP ZR-1 and its 180 mph top speed was the stuff of dreams....

Now there are used 600+ HP V12 Benzes available for under $50k, and even a V6 Camry can hit 60 in six seconds. 1000 HP supras can be built for under $20k in mods.

It is a wonderful new world we live in....at least until gas spikes again and GPS based speed monitoring put Big Brother in the passenger seat. :thumbsdow

Don't think the BMW's would count.

The BMW customers are Very unlikely to free the limiter in mass, even on the M Series cars. Maybe 1-2% of production would try this IMO.

I also hear the percent of lease to purchase is the highest of all Mfg. People are in general not wanting to own them out of warranty, due to perceived high repair costs.

As I have been told here by a reliable source they are mostly cars for:

High end Hair Stylists
Young Professional Women
Daily driver for the Wife or Mistress- I resemble this remark (wife)
Sporty Cruisers for Exec's
Men of the Oposite Sex
BMW enthusiasts - Post Bangle Gen XYZ or whatever it is now
Guy's named Jim that know Guys named Sam

In my case hope the repair cost is only a myth I just have one that came off of warranty!

I didn't know that Sam knows Jim. :lol
