all I want as a daily driver is a car I know is gona start everymorning, have four doors, be able to drive the sh*t out of it, if something happens (no matter what) it would be covered under warrenty, relatively fun to drive, and not have it break(ever) no matter how hard I try, and I have tried very hard for the last three years:lol the E39 M5 was such a car and I drove it hard everyday for three years until the lease was up, then got the new M5, and so far it has not let me down even once after two plus years, so I can care less about the depreciation, I lease the car, so I have no attachments to the car, I know what my residual is gona be and when my lease is over is time to move on without a second though about this car, it has been a wonderfull and fun work mule, all my friend make fun of me when I have my M5 full of cars parts for my other cars.:biggrin

Based on what you described, I would personally get a WRX or an EVO, but hey that's me...

I would choose an M5 over a WRX or EVO all the time, as long as cost was not a big issue. Not even close!

I for one don't think most are comparing it as a possible successor to the GT. I am mostly curious about it as a possible highly spririted, not flashy, daily driver to replace my old 4 dr Acura.

I just picked the wife up a new CTS V, 556 hp 0-60 3.9 secs all the whistles & bells and in sport mode a pretty darn good handler. With every option (Recaros etc) under $70,000. I highly recommend as a daily driver.

An excellent review, and, like the previous posts, beautifully written.

I think the GT is becoming harder to pigeon-hole, when it first appeared it was simply 'the fastest' (pretty much), but the experience of ownership lends it a different appeal. And that's really quite hard to define.

Like many here, I've had some fast cars over the years, from the Murcielago through to the Vanquish (for example), but found it very difficult to settle with a car that was 'me'. The GT does that, it's the epitome of what I want a supercar to be - rare, beautiful, rapid, timeless... perhaps it's that final element that really sets it apart.

Whilst there will be 'better' cars powered by increasingly powerful computer technology, they'll handle better, go faster etc, they just won't posses the Mojo that the GT has.

The GT harks to an earlier more visceral motoring era - the one where the Yanks came over and whipped the Italians on their playground, the era of motoring gentlemen, the era where form and design met in an impossibly beautiful design....

I could go on!! :lol

The CTS-V coupe will likely be the replacement for wifey's 335i...if G(overnment). M. is "allowed" to continue building 556 hp (and up) cars, that is. :frown

I loved the review!

I thought the review was right on since I too own a 2006 Ford GT- Titanium/ Silver stripes and a 2009 Super Silver Nissan GTR. There are only some minor points that I would like to make about my take on the comparison. The Ford GT has a definite disadvantage for me since the doors need to open widely to get out of the car. Minor as it is it is, not a daily driver for that point even though I have driven it to work many times. I use the GTR as a daily driver and love the ease of the drive as well as the torque as described in the article. When in traffic going to LA you can drive it like a Cadillac or drive it like a race car when you have the desire. The Traction control/ 4 wheel drive on the GTR really makes it a safer car as you said if you have a heavy foot as you so elequently stated. Straight line fast in the Ford GT - OK but on a sharp turn, be careful!!
It is really funny since I really dont think the GTR looks very nice but I have gotten more thumbs up driving it on the highway, city streets, parked at the grocery store than I get driving the Ford GT. I have had people taking pictures in the rain of the GTR while in my parking lot! Go figure.
I loved your past cars! I posted the Anniversary Coutach that I sold and bought the Ford GT the same day. The Coutach was for looks. The other cars are to drive.

Spot on regarding the GT doors, and an issue I somehow always choose to overlook. That is, until I'm in a situation where I need to park and I realize that if someone gets next to me I won't be able to go home until they do! The door issue is a deal breaker for some guys and certainly takes the GT out of the daily driver realm.

There's no question that the GTR is the swiss army knife of sports cars right now, and it's probably is a bit of a stretch for me to compare it with the GT. However, my enthusiasm for cars knows no bounds: if its got wheels on it, I want to learn about it then analyze it. :wink

(2) I have had people taking pictures in the rain of the GTR while in my parking lot! Go figure.

(2) The key phrase here is, "in the rain". How many FGT's do you see tooling around in it! :lol (Aside from ol' Jeffey's that is!)

I know your pulling my leg now:lol thats like me saying if your going to get an exotic that does everything well, dont buy the Ford gt you might as well get the ZR1:eek

Sounds like a good plan. You know what your costs are, beat the sh*t out of it, dump it when the lease is up. I would say that is a good value.

However, I will remember never to buy a CPO M5 from TX! :rofl

It feels good to be able to drive it as hard as you want with out worrying about consequences, I have found the bmw warranty to be the most comprehensive when it comes to this matter, short of wrecking the car everything is covered, and I mean everything, they even covered a clutch for my e39, although that may have had something to do with the fact that the clutches were know to be weak in that car.

I agree, beat the hell out of it, new pads, rotors, suspension parts are covered. Only tires aren't covered.

I dumped my wife's BMW after a few minor things starting going bad post warranty due to my est. cost to keep it. I still am at risk with a 750 just out of warranty that has very low miles (as if EP owned it) I am taking a chance keeping it. I have read horror stories bimmerfest.com where many owners would never keep one past the warranty. A number of them have tranny problems which is a very costly repair. I am more concerned with all of the electrical gizmos that can fail. It is insane how many motors are moving each and everytime you get in or out of the car!

I will join Sam in trashing BMWs if my EP driven one fail prematurely.

They DO "balk" at springing for a new battery under warranty unless you stand firm about it though.:thumbsdow

I noticed an ad on TV last night for the CTS coupe, with a ship date, that Cadillac showed a few months back. GM said it was cancelled a while back. Apparently the infusion of money put it back on the roadmap. A good sign.

The CTS-V coupe will likely be the replacement for wifey's 335i...if G(overnment). M. is "allowed" to continue building 556 hp (and up) cars, that is. :frown

Roger that. Which is exactly why the darn car has to be kept on a 'tender (as I found out after the fact).

For all the reasons posted above, wifey's will "go down the road" juuuuuuuuust before it's warranty bites the dust.

I got my 1st battery replaced without question under warranty. The 2nd time I got a song and dance and was told that the battery held a charge, so it wasn't replaced. It was only at 600CCA vs. 800CCA new. So I replace it on my own dime.

It is interesting that the ECU keeps all kinds of data on battery use, such as the maximum time between starts. Mine showed over 45 days. I wonder, does this beat EPs record? I have the car on a B. Tender so that isn't an issue, but my guess is the dealer would haved tried to weasel out due to the extreme time of inactivity.
