Here is my Car Incident:

AT the age of 19, my Dad was carjacked and put in the trunk of his car. The pieces of shit that did this to him were on their way to Griffith Park in Los Angeles to to kill him, rob him of his Gold Rolex and his Wallet - he heard this while in the trunk. He used the tire spare changer and got the trunk open and jumped out at 25-30Mph. The forest ranger was a short distance behind him and saw that whole incident and rescued him - he was badly injured and it took him a while to recover physically & mentally.

Months later they found the car. We paid the tow company to bring it home after the investigation was completed -they never found the dirt bags! We decided to have the car taken to the dealership and have it gone through. I told my Dad I would drive and had him follow me in the other family car. Backed out of the driveway and put it in Drive. Smoke/fire started bellowing from under the hood. Put the car in park and tried to open the door and I couldn't, the electrical system must have shorted out and the Power Door/Window buttons no longer functioned. In my panic, with flames shooting from under the hood of the car, I reached to the manual door lock and pulled it up, opened the door and started to get the hell out of the car when fuel from somewhere caught on fire and literally blew me out of the car. I landed on my forehead pretty hard. As I was getting up all I could see is my Dad & my late Mom running towards me. I managed to get to the curb and collect myself while I comforted my parents. I look to the left and my dumbass neighbor is using his Super 8mm camera recording the event rather than help.

What did I learn from that incident? People have been stupid for years and we should not get too emotional about the stupidity of others! When I read about a wreck or a bad accident it is nothing more than a reminder to be careful.

So which number wrecked GT made/will make it sink in that you should be careful driving high horsepower cars? The 200th? 300th? 500th? Pretty sure somewhere between 500-1000 have already been damaged in accidents.

Are you telling me you really needed to start a thread saying "Search google! A yellow GT got wrecked!" because you needed a reminder to be careful?

This is personally what woke me up to safety. I has having one of those Tiger nights and just swung it too hard and missed the parking spot. That is my lovely wife in my favorite gown looking on.

I thought we were not supposed to post other forum members wrecked GT pictures? If it is any GT, then that's what it is!

Chip, it was a different team member that was the 1st to crash. Mark has never crashed one, to date (knock on wood). Spins (hundreds, and on VDA's), and lots of other broken stuff during testing, but never a wreck.
An excellent point, Mark and I discussed this subject at length in Utah, his approach is to not drive a car he does not own beyond 8/10 thus he does not crash. He is the only one I would ever let drive my GT on a track. In fairness though his 8/10 is like most normal peoples 4/10. I really believe that the majority of 1 car GT crashes are related to driving well beyond the drivers skill set given the conditions.

This doesn't sound right what I meant was Mark is as controlled and comfortable at 8/10 as most people are at 4/10.

It could have been a combination of several things. We have been in the worst drought on record here. The streets have accumulated oil and dust that we have never seen. It has also been fairly warm this winter up to about two weeks ago. If he took it out on a sub 50 degree day on curved dusty oily streets then it is like driving on wet pavement or worse. His largest mistake is not taking out a different car in these conditions. Otherwise I'm with DBK. Since it was not my car I have no room to judge his actions. Last time I looked he is a big boy and it is his car.

Ok.. A contrasting story... (yes I've seen the other side)

A long long time ago - in a land not so far away (1979) me and my buddy were driving home from a Moody Blues concert. I was in my 1969 Mach 1 - which I was quite proud of because I fit a 351 Cleveland in (1970 was the first year for the Mustangs having a 351 Cleveland)... It was late at night - I was young and foolish (I am no longer young) - and I thought it was time to open her up... I know I hit 120 (pegged the old speedometer). The 351 was really quite built (nothing compared to todays power). A front tire let go. In hindsight it may have been the tire - but the reality was I was just being stupid. The car spun multiple times, and I ended up almost on the tarmac of by the old North Central hangars at the Minneapolis airport. Hitting the curb totaled the car as nothing was left from the suspension.

A random car (actually the only car) that watched this pulled over. After seeing we were ok, and checking out the (wrecked) car - this old man (maybe 45...) said - "be cool"... as the highway patrol showed up. He told the cops a story that greatly diminished my stupid driving, and really saved my ass.

I can never condone my driving that night - but he was not the typical dumb ass that we have all met and don't really like....

I learned a lot that night. There are cool people....

I knew someone (not me, of course) who was involved in a T-bone collision about 1 month before getting his driver's license. He was 15, had his temporary permit and was driving alone. Tired of losing the girls to the older guys in high school who had their own cars, he decided to take his mom's new notchback Mustang on a date to impress a certain well equipped blonde he had been oogling for some time. The date went well. I have it on good authority that a Mustang's back seat really isn't too cramped if you are young and nimble.

In any event, after dropping off the now worldly blonde, he T-boned a car on a major highway. The other car had cut across the highway, directly into the path of his mom's new Mustang. Fortunately, there were no injuries and the Mustang, as a testament to the careful, robust design and construction techniques employed by Detroit in the early 1980s, was driveable. Sadly, the other car was not. I believe it was some American-job-stealing foreign thing.

A Florida Highway Patrol officer arrived at the scene in, of course, a 5.0 Mustang notchback, one of the coolest cop cars of all time. Out steps the meanest looking black woman ever seen, looking more like a Raiders defensive lineman than a peace officer. In one of those moments that convinces a person of the existence of justice in the world, she told the "boy" (poetic justice I assume) to get his a!! home and to stay off the road until he got his license. To this day, it is unknown how Ms. Greg Townsend finagled the paperwork, but the young man was able to get his license without incident and went on to have many more happy experiences with his new well equipped blond friend. I share this experience whenever someone tells me a bad cop story.

The only upside to this is seeing more pictures of a blue no-stripe, that scheme is really growing on me and I never run across pictures of them.

I don't have this global interest in others lives besides my close personal friends. I don't understand facebook, twitter, TMZ and the rest. It is fine if that interests you, but I keep my correspondence personal and direct. In fact most of the time I start a thread at this point I do it in the owners section as I am directing most of my comments towards fellow or former owners. However I do have a couple of quick thoughts on this subject from recent personal experience.

I don't understand peoples reluctance to admit an accident. If you are any kind of above average driver you are going to wreck at some point. That is the price you pay for getting better. You can't get your best unless you know your limit. You just hope you find it without a big incident. The photos of that "wreck" wasn't a wreck. It looked like a minor off road adventure.

I also agree with the many posts that indicate that people should respect others privacy. I was lucky I guess that I live semi rural and had my accident at 7am. No pics that I did not choose to share showed up anywhere. One should never have to see their car or name used in a public forum without their consent like happened to one of our members whose car sadly caught fire and some idiot filmed then posted it. (not here, but elsewhere) There is a story behind every photo that shows up online and the caption or paragraph that shows up with it is seldom remotely objective. People are quick to judge though. The looks I was getting from the EMT's/persons at the accident site while I was bleeding and broken on the ground next to my obviously totaled car were not compassionate to say the least. Nothing I would have said was going to change that so I did not bother. I am just glad that my life interests me enough still that I can ignore the background noise of the morons in the world around me.
