Jason, glad you're out of hibernation. I always look forward to the before and after pictures.
I should have some up in the next day or two :thumbsup
On another note, out of complete regard for the automobile itself: A message about do-it-yourself detailing for special vehicles.
I read
metalman's post about "High mileage Heritages" and I completely agree, his 14k mile Ford GT looks better than many of the lower mileage GT's I've seen. It really looks magnificent. I have only seen, up close, roughly 50 different GT's or so. Metalman takes good care of the GT himself, and I have been detailing it a few times a year since the middle of 2008. It brought up a valid point about car care, and while the daily driver doesn't need to be show perfect, the special car should take high priority in professional hands.
Over the years, I have worked on hundreds of different cars, hard and soft paintwork, many makes/models from various generations, assembly, and painting processes. If you have a vehicle that you consider special by any means, either sentimental value, custom uniqueness, monetary value, etc... it has been my experiences that prove time and time again to make sure a professional detailer is involved in maintaining it's appearance, even occasionally in between your cleaning. I would say leave it entirely up to a professional detailer to maintain, but I know many of you like to do some upkeep yourselves because as the owner of the vehicle, it's a lot more fun. However, keep in mind there are so many variables involved in each process that need to be followed the same way, the right way, every time, or else all of your efforts could be doing more harm than good in the long run.
Take microfiber towels for example, not only must they be at a minimum 20% polyamide, they must also pass the CD test before each use - Use a brand new CD and wipe the towel all over it. If the CD does not lightly scratch, the towel is completely safe for paintwork. If you leave the microfiber out in the open for a few minutes, it will need to be washed again because they are dust magnets and catch
everything in the air. I have purchased just about every single microfiber towel out there and used it to test its effectiveness and there are some really bad ones out there that shouldn't be sold. I rotate my microfibers to various parts of the vehicle after the initial use, wash/dry and CD test in between uses, and have strict guidelines to always follow. I really have a lot more to say about microfibers, but this is just to show how important it is to have a professional involved. I could write a book about polishing different paintwork. When a vehicle is brought to me for polishing I can tackle the paintwork a hundred different ways with different polishers, pads, polishes, speed and relative heat generated, to restore a slew of
defects and out of all of my
polishing endeavors over the years I have never damaged any type of paintwork, thanks to my knowledge, experience, and low-abrasive approaches. The state of the art ultrasonic depth gauge is a bonus too :biggrin Truth is, I could go on and on about everything detailing related until the letters wear off my keyboard.
You wouldn't take your Ford GT to Jiffy Lube so out of sake for the collectible automobile itself, so that it continues to look its best and give you something to admire when it's parked in your garage, to further protect the beauty of any rolling investment, have a professional detailer involved to make sure it is in the best shape it can be. If it was an expensive vehicle to begin with, even more so. Many of my customers will bring their F-cars monthly during driving season for general upkeep just to make sure nothing unnecessarily fades/wears/dulls from the sun and I can overlook its appearance, monitor the condition of the clear coat over time, and stay on top of protecting the paintwork/rubber/seals and condition entry pressure points on leather bolsters.
A little maintenance can go a long way, even more so if you're in it for the long haul. Seeing as Ford won't be producing these
same exact GT's ever again, I'd say this is
more than just a "Special Car" to everyone here.
Indianapolis trip coming up! Will announce dates shortly.
