Never owned a vett - been a Ford blue guy since I was 20. With that said, I would get the GT500 and not just because I had to wait 8 months to get mine!!! Stepping into a vett would be easy - good luck trying to order a Shelby GT500.

Well, to really stir the pot... skip on both and buy a viper :willy :willy

We went cruising the other day, my Blue and White GTS, My buddies Yellow and Black GTS, and another buddy's new Red and White Shelby. Passed some friends who met up with us earlier. When asked what they thought of the Shelby they had not even noticed it....
Neat car, and I am tempted as well... but comparing my Z06 to my new coupe... I am really enjoying the viper.

Given your choice though, go with the Z.

just my .02$ :cheers

My 07Z is a better performer no question. But the Z is Boring as stated earlier mine barely draws any attention its too close to a regular C6. My 07 GT500 draws alot of attention has more room then the Z including a backseat and has a 500HP Blown Motor and wears the Shelby badge. The Z will soon be eclipsed badly by the Blue Devil(it will be the Vette to have), The GT500 may well be one of Shelby's last cars because of his age. I have no problem with the peformance of my GT500 it runs strong considering the weight difference.

The GT500 is a coupe.
No, the TT is not a 4 seater anymore, my kids are 13 and 14.
The Z is 30k more, like the power, but not the looks that much.
Someone suggested to get the GT500 and mod it ???

What's Ford planning to keep up w/competition ? Anyone knows?
There's a pretty good market for hi performance cars out there...

I just picked up a red/white Shelby GT500 a few weeks ago. I have a Porsche GT3, and more than a dozen other exotic and muscle cars. For what it's worth, I consider the Shelby and the ZO6 to be very different animals. My opinion is that you may find the Z06 to be slightly redundant with your other cars. The Shelby is far more practical, as you can fold down the rear seats and haul top-soil if you need to (an exageration), bring two adults along with you in the back seat comfortably, all in a package that is fast, smooth, and comfortable. Plus, for not a lot of money, you can add the pulley and tune and push over 540 HP to the rear wheels (Over 600 at the crank). You can also tune the suspension for track duty for not a lot of cash. So, the tunability is far more flexible with the Shelby. I say, go with the Shelby. I did, and don't regret it.

Yes, I'm a "mustang guy".........So, excuse me for pointing out the fact that the shelby is a heavy car that is no match for a Z51 let alone a Z06, that's all..........As a ford enthusiast, it's a shame that the best ford can do is kill SVT and supply an expensive 4,000lb car with a live axle that can't approach the PERFORMANCE of GM's efforts. If ford sold cars that were inspiring, they wouldn't be a broke future subsidiary of Nissan. Only a few of us are lucky enough to be able afford an FGT. Fortunately for ford, most buyers aren't worried about the road course or world class performance and the mustang sells well.

don't tell me that pilots don't appreciate a Sukhoi. It is a winner after all and isn't winning what gave the GT it's heritage? I agree, you have to love them, but how many world aerobatic championships have been won in a Pitts lately? :wink

Bruce,

The biggest difference between the FordGTForum and just about every other forum on the web is civility. Most of us own multiple cars and everybody has their own reasons for choosing what they do. As far as road course cars are concerned, every car is a pig compared to something else unless your driving a top level F1 single seater. Every car is a stone slug at the strip compared to something else unless you're busting 5 seconds in a top fuel car. Though I doubt the forum members don't already know it, your pointing out that the Corvette is lighter, faster, and handles better than the GT500 or, for that matter, the Bentley Continental GT's that several of our members own is a welcome analysis. These other cars are purchased because they perform in other ways for their owners that the Corvette can't match. There is a reason the Mustang outsells the Corvette over 10 to 1. General Motors is every bit as big a financial train wreck as Ford, the GT500 weighs 3800 lbs, and it outperformes every 4 seat car General Motors builds in America. If you want to post up in the GT500/Shelby section of this Ford enthusiast forum with comments you've made like, "nose heavy 4000 lb. pig and fat ass Shelby" your not pointing out anything, your insulting. My "like kind" response to your post and your reaction to it shows you don't like the same type of insults you have issued applied to your choices. Your analysis is welcome, but please confine your insults to the Corvette Forums where such comments are the norm.

frankly, who cares if a Z06, Viper, FGT, Shelby, Kia is quicker... they all are great cars. 99.999% of us will never drive our cars to the absolute limit.

Kia's are great cars!:biggrin

I know! I get one every now & then!:rofl

But seriously, don't you think the back end looks of the C6's would benefit "big time" from a "split rear window"? That might even offset the "downer" experienced by viewing the FRONT end... maybe...

'Don't see it ever being allowed by the "bean counters" though.:thumbsdow

FYI...I know someone who has weighed their Shelby with the stereo that has the heavier sub and a 3/4 full tank and it weighed 3850 on the scales. Ask anyone who owns one, it drives like a car that weighs much less....

Well...I would be that someone...I had it corner weighed back in August.

Here is a review I wrote on my GT500 when I picked it up back in early July (posted on DBK's sister site):

"I picked up my new Shelby from Freedom Ford in Hampton Virginia within 18 hours of its delivery to the dealership. Freedom had it all detailed and ready to go when I arrived. The car is beautiful in person, photos just don’t do it justice.

I left the same day for the trip back to Florida. I decided to stay off the Interstates all the way home and drive on two lane roads as much as possible. No only did I believe this would be better driving conditions for vehicle break-in, I also thought it would be more fun. I was not disappointed.

I put 1100 miles on the car over the next two and a half days. Here’s some of my impressions:

- The car attracts an enormous amount of attention. I own several high profile cars (including a Ford GT) but I have never seen so much interest. I can’t explain it. Perhaps it is the history of the original Shelby, perhaps it is because the car is priced so that it is within reach of so many enthusiasts, or perhaps it is my good looks (not). Camera phones, U-turns in the middle of the road to follow me, crowds at gas stations, rolled down windows at stop lights to talk…you name it.

- Fit and finish are excellent. I opted for the upgraded leather, and I hate to say it, but the interior materials and assembly quality are better than my Ford GT. I don’t like the position of the cup holders. I know, I know, it was built for driving, not drinking, but I do like my Big Gulp beside me on road trips. The problem is if you put a drink in the cup holder it is too close to the shifter and interferes. Exterior paint and body panel fit are excellent. Ford has definitely made “Quality is Job One” a reality with this car. While I do wish that the stripes were painted instead of taped, the taped stripes work.

- The car is very comfortable even after hours in the driver’s seat. Suspension doesn’t beat you up. Seats are well designed ergonomically and the leather is pretty supple. There is no annoying wind noise, no rattles, and no squeaks. Running on beat up farm roads was not a problem

- Engine power is smooth and strong. While I did not really get on it too hard during the drive (now THAT took self restraint), even moderate gas pedal position brings on wonderfully smooth and linear power. Gotta love that supercharger whine!

- The transmission and shifter work as smooth as butter. Throws are short (you don’t need to mod this in my opinion), and the shift lever is positioned well. I believe this transmission is the same that is in my Viper, but it seems to work smoother in the Shelby.

- I am not impressed with the clutch. While the clutch pressure feels just right, it is difficult for me to get a chatter free start. I have a number of manual tranny cars so I don’t think it is me, but who knows. If you really want to get on it there is no problem, but for normal launches, the clutch requires a lot of finesse with the gas pedal. I guess I’ll refine my technique over time, but I expected better.

- The brakes are incredible.

- The car’s handling and cornering are crisp and tight. I was expecting to possibly be disappointed in this department given the final weight of the car, but the weight is not evident in actual real world driving.

All in all it was a great drive home. The car definitely exceeded my expectation. Other than the clutch and all the attention it receives, it’s all good. My plan is to use the Shelby as my daily driver. I’ll drop another post in a month or two with more impressions."

Now, seven months and 7000 miles later I am still pleased with my choice.

IMHO no chebby looks as good [bad] as my GT500.

Look, let's agree to disagree on minor details because this is a bit out of hand. Apparently I'm in trouble for insulting you and, recognizing that perception is reality, I will now formally apologize to you, Chip. Never meant anything personal by it.

You said I was "wrong" to call myself a mustang guy. Frankly, I considered that an insult. Just for clarification, I am somewhat dissapointed in a few aspects of the new car, that's all. Just another perspective for the fine readers at home out there. It's all a matter of perspective and opinion. Mine simply comes from the perspective of a track enthusiast and I should have made that part clear. Had I communicated more clearly, we wouldn't have had such a fun exchange :biggrin

I'm all for civility too but there's nothing wrong with pointing out that Ford has trended towards a 4,000lb pony car where BMW and GM have trended towards better performance thru the use of advanced tech and light weight materials. "Fat ass" was only my crude way of being concise and not a personal insult. Of course I would love to have one in the collection. I'd like all kinds of "nose heavy pigs" including the lovely Bentley so mentioned.

edit: now that you guys have me thinking, if I added a back seat and all the rest of the luxury to the R it would weigh the same as the Shelby. Still wish it had an IRS though . . .

cheers,

Bruce

Just an FYI, an unladen M6 Coupe weighs 3909 , and the Convertible weighs 4,398. Both heavier than their GT500 counterparts, if you want to compare two door coupes and verts.

Bruce, IRS was not installed on the Shelby because they are too easily damaged on the drag strip where many Shelby enthusiasts hang out. Ed
