Freon Leak

Just purchased an 05 w/ 2K miles, drove it home to Alabama from Wisconsin. Air worked ok in WI, not so well here in AL. I have no GT specific knowledge, but upon inspection of what I think are the refrigerant service ports, one of them is oily, as if it has been leaking. I will be taking it to the local Ford dealer, but I would like to at least know if that is what I am looking at as I am scared sh!#less about the dealer since it took me 5 minutes on the phone to get the guy to realize that this GT was not a mustang.

Are the service ports under the "trunk" passenger side?
Does the GT have a refrigerant sight glass somewhere?
Has anyone heard of having to change the o-rings on the needle valves?

I have attached a photo, the top valve is the oily one. Front of the car is to the right.

Thanks.

Don't know, but interesting you have a red top battery. Mine's black.

'Can only answer your O-ring question: it has been posted here on the Forum that the air cond system's o-rings CAN/DO supposedly fail if the air' isn't used periodically.

They are the very same Optima Battery. Ford has a black top for the OEM version. If you don't want to pay the dealer markup, just go to Costco and buy the Red top.

Optima also sells a Yellow or Blue top. The Yellow top is a dual-purpose battery. It is for applications that demand cranking power and heavy cycling (think - thug stereo system). The Blue top is for marine applications.

From the factory they came with Black Tops with Ford GT printed. Replacements under warranty came with Red Tops with Ford GT printed on them. This is one way to find out if someone let their cars sit for a while without a trickle charger.

Those sure look like service ports. If you're afraid of Ford there must be some good air conditioning shops in your area. I don't think the mechanical workings of the system are that much different than most cars. Once you go into electronics and ducting you could have a problem. Probably an evacuation and recharge will solve the problem. Like it was mentioned use the system, but in Alabama that's probably not an issue.

You might want to talk to a hot rod shop as well. The AC comes from Vintage Air, which typically is used in hot rods.

Thoses are the high and low side freon service ports. The small amount of oil around the low side fitting that you see is most likley from some either just puttung gauges on or from recovereing and filling the sys. when you remove the hose conection from the port a small mount of freon and oil will come out under presure and cause that. It is very true that if the car has been sitting and the ac was not used the system o-rings will dry and start to leak. It is normal, they need the oil in the system to stay soft. I have seen a few different leaks all from different spots so I can't say there is a common problem with them. I have seen compresor shaft seals leak, line o rings and accumualtor o rings leak and most of the time it is just because the a/c has never been used. The worst case for you would be a leak from the evaporator. The dash would have to come out to replace it so cross your fingers, but I have not heard of any evaporator leaks yet in a GT and I try to stay close intouch with Ford f.s.e's on GT problems and I work on alot of GT's. If I can be of any help let me know.

My car is an "06" and I bought it right off of the showroom floor with the red battery. Are you saying that the dealer replaced the battery?

UPDATE: Thanks for the welcome, the trip was sweet. Never have I had my (the GT) picture taken so many times.

Took the car to Woody Anderson Ford in Huntsville, AL this morning. They treated me well, got me in quickly, and let me stay with the car the entire time. They think that there is a pinhole leak in the weld for the pressure sensor "T" to the right of the top service port in the picture. The new tube should be here next week, only $133. They re-charged the system, and it is cold - so thankfully no major problems. Guess I will find out if they got it right next week.

I have a early 2005 that clearly sat around until I bought it last September with only 1,300 miles. My A/C worked perfectly until the beginning of May. It just stopped working during a club rally with the outside temp at 113 in the shade. :ack Fortunately my car is white and goes really fast:lol Anyway, it was the condenser. Total cost $850 parts and labor at Galpin Ford. ( Luckily still under warranty) It would have been a one day fix but the condenser was on back order at Ford. It took 5 weeks to arrive! It has been in 100+ temps regularly since I got it back with no problems. My only problem now is that I have lost my excuse when a cop stops me for speeding. :wink
