Ok folks - this is from Mrs. Moose -
No Speedos - I don't care who you are! At the first rally, the evening events had people in all styles of dress - from shorts to sun dresses to cocktail dresses for some of the evening dinners (come to think of it, I'd pay money to see Bony & DBK in cocktail dresses). Personally, capris, sandals, simple shirt will be my attire for most of the event. I'm not bringing anything fancy and I'm not bringing any high heels (vacation attire only for us!). John will probably wear shorts and sandals the whole time). JBG - it really is a personal preference. We're in for the comfort factor. There will undoubtedly be people in business casual; women in dresses and nice pants suits. There were a few people over dressed at the Ford dinner, but I figured they must be Ford employees (rationalization is always helpful). I didn't feel the least bit uncomfortable in vacationwear during any of the events in MI - it probably won't be any different in CA. If your Mrs wants to call me, I'll be happy to fill her in more (send a PM).

I can tell you that at all of our Viper national events it's dress casual the whole event. My plan here too.

Casual is all that can fix in a GT's storage capacity!

Ed -

Let us know if you think the schedule below is realistic. Check in time at the hotel is 3pm.

Leave Half Moon Bay 5am. Drive 100 miles / 1hr45min to Monterey.
GT's will be waiting.
Quick cup 'o Starbucks
Leave Monterey 7am. Drive 300 miles / 5 hrs + 1 hr lunch break en route.
Arrive Malibu 1pm. GT's will be waiting. 1 hr break in Malibu.
Leave Malibu 2pm. Drive 30 miles / 35 min to Santa Monica Pier.
GT's will be waiting.
Leave Santa Monica @ 3pm. Drive 50 miles / 1hr to Newport Beach.
Arrive @ hotel 4pm.
Nap. Nookie. Shower. Cocktail reception.

If this is to much of a hassle just say so. It's a lot of driving for you Northern Cal boys. We can always just meet in Newport.

I realize 5am is early. However, if you try to get to Newport from Malibu after 4pm it may add 1 hour or more to your trip - hit or miss.

Lemme' know.

I like it, like it a lot :biggrin

canibl, my friend

I don't know what part of California you are familiar with but to estimate 50 minutes from Santa Monica to Newport Beach at 3 PM on a Wednesday may be wishful thinking!!!

I would suggest to you that this is realistically more like 2.5 hours to go the 50 miles, unless of course you can arrange a CHiP escort down the HOV Lane. This is the largest traffic corridor in the Nation and the 405 to Newport is a parking lot at 3PM.

The other option is to spend a little more time in Malibu, like at Neptune's Net on the PCH and Ventura County line (biker roadside bar), and then hit the Santa Monica Fwy (I-10) around 7 Pm to the 405 South, that will put you in Newport about 8:30, which would be about the same time getting there as if you left at 4 PM!

Where is Woboose on this issue? I would not get on the 405 South at the I-10 interchange at 4 PM in August in a GT with the heat and stand still traffic. Just not the way to treat this race car! :thumbsup

The other option is you guys from NorCal leave a day earlier, stay at the Double Tree Fess Parker in Santa Barbara, and then leave early, take the PCH at Oxnard to Malibu, meet up with the GT boys in Malibu and Santa Monica and then hit the 405 south to Newport at about 11:00 AM, then it is 50 minutes to the hotel.

Fess Parker has hosted us last fall for a GT Rally and they have excellent parking facilities and would treat your GTs like their offspring!

Ed, Canibl, Blackice,
How many Gt's do we have confirmed from here? It sounds like we are going to have a drive from hell with the heat and traffic in SoCal. Will it be possibile to leave a day earlier? Ed, I know it will be difficult for you, what do you think?

I think that's the best idea. If you guys end up getting on the 405 at 3pm having to go through all of metro L.A, you'll get to the hotel 4 hours later, tired, pissed off, and grumpy.

Todd - what a picture that was. First I laughed, then I cringed. That image unfortunately is now burned into my retinas for the remainder of the day

In all honesty I'm getting worried about ya. Yesterday the "moon" shots of the ugliest people there at the event and now then this.....

I'm getting pissed off just thinking about you poor sorry bastards stuck on the 405 headed south at quiting time!:lol

The key to driving on LA freeways is "timing and driving aginst the flow".

Thanks for all your info and advice. Keep it coming so we can plan a fun and a trip that will allow us to arrive stressless (is that a word?)

Bottom Line,
The earlier you get to Malibu / Santa Monica the better. I'm the early riser type. Staying over along the way or getting up extra extra early is your call.

Another option is you Norcal and CentCal GT owners, just bite the bullitt and take the 5 directly down the center of the state and into LA connecting to the 405. This is a straight road, has CHiPs on it but generally knocks 3 + hours off a trip from San Francisco to LA, that could put you into LA in the early afternoon, and maybe into Newport earlier, but no matter how you slice it, if you are not heading out of West LA on the 405 before 1 PM, forget a quick jaunt down to Newport. If you guys decide to stop in S Barbara at the DoubleTree, maybe some of us LA GTs will meet you there??? We'll buy the cocktails, right Woboose? You can always for the coast run back home under less intense time constraints!

As for taking an extra day off, I want to experience at the end of life, being able to say , "Damn, I wish I had one more day in the Office!" Right, Ed?

"Bartender, may I please have another freshly squeezed backyard lime margarita, por favor?"

Where's Analogdesigner, he has got to hook up a frozen margarita dispenser in the place of the Bass Woofer. Now that would be ingenious! Weather hot outside, stopped in traffic, no problem, just crankout a nearly frozen "Back Yard Lime Margarita" and bingo, life is good, no one will stop you for speeding, and when you get to where you are going, the party is already in the GT!
