The news reports this morning are saying that over a million people have been evacuated as of now.

On a side note, did any of you catch the clip from Chris Mathews(MSNBC) program yesterday? He had our Leiutenant Governor, John Garamendi, on and that stupid douche was ranting against Bush and the Iraq war. His state is on fire, hundreds and thousands of families without homes and the best he can do is slam his political adversaries. What an ass.

So far 0% contained. I'm a few miles from the nearest flames and feel relatively safe but the Santa Ana's pick up soon and these flames start up where the winds carry them. I smell the carnage even sitting in my house.

Garamendi to SanDiego, if you voted for more taxes this probably wouldn't have happened.

IS it just me, or does that look way too green to be CA?

The green you see is more than likely a satellite archive picture probably taken in some early spring. The fires were placed as an overlay..or...whomever compiled the final picture color balanced the mosaic.

Maybe one of you Cal guys can 'splain this to me.

Given that these fires occur year after year after year as regular as clockwork - especially around Malibu for some reason - WHY don't people in these areas have sprinkler systems throughout their properties (in their trees if they have any, on the roof, in their landscaping, etc.) to soak 'em down when a fire approaches? Am I missing something here (obviously)???

I mean, it's not like there's a one in a billion shot these systems will ever be needed in these areas, for Pete's sake.

Alot of the land you see on fire is BLM land or land desinated "conservation "
We are mandated on how much vegatation we have to have. You will be fined for clearing an area like you see burning on tv. Thank the Govt. workers

Hey pockets California is a strange place.

Approximately 5 years ago, not too far from the Arrowhead fires, the pine trees at my place began to get infested with some sort of a beetle that eventually killed the trees. This epidemic spread over the years and overtime the forest got loaded w/ dead trees - fire fuel. I wanted to cut my trees down, but could not - the beetle was protected. Needles to say, I sold my place.

Malibu, Irvine, Poway all suffer from the same liberal miserable rules -some endangered F###ing species always took precedence. Besides, now we have a drought and watering a hillside could send you to jail. Santa Barbara runs a desalination plant and has ample water. You would think Los Angeles had enough brains to do the same - but they don't. I hate our California officials - Enough ranting.

The gov't obviously needs to install sprinkers systems on their land too! :lol God knows it'd be cheaper that fighting fires every 10 minutes...

I sure don't see what would prevent someone from installing a 'sprinkler defense system' regardless of what vegatation one has. I'm not real big on the idea of clearing vegatation as a defense, as IT'S needed to keep the dirt in place during the rainy season (without it, a house could change zip codes real easy when a hillside lets go). And unless vegatation is wetted down in the FIRE season, much of it won't be there to prevent slides when needed in the rainy season. :ack :willy:willy:willy

If water supply is a pblm, those on Malibu beach (for instance) could pump salt water. 'Much less damage from THAT than from fire...

Just read your comments, HH. Fines for water use under FIRE conditions is just NUTS!!!

With 2% humidity, 90 degree temperature and 60 mph winds a sprinkler system is hopelessly overwhelmed. Only a heavy deluge can overcome these conditions and just barely at that. Until you see the magnitude of the fire first hand, you don't really understand.

Pockets, I have a hydrant on my property so I figured I'd stay and fight sunday night. I hooked up 3 100ft 1 1/2" fire hoses, opened the valve aimed the nozzle (for a test run) and let-her-rip. The stream at full force (800gpm) went striaght for about 20ft and then turned 90 degrees in the 70 to 80 mph wind. So I packed up and prepared to run. The winds are truly devastating when mixed with fire.:frown
