FGT vs Carrera GT or A Winter Day In California

hey ed arent you in the sac area? it's good to see your car out and running. Ford GT's dont like garages. also whats with the police? they probably followed you there.

Isn't the Porsche known to have clutch problems? So much so that they won't cover it except to the original owner?

No problems, just takes 8K to replace one according to this thread on Viper alley. I heard of prices more like 20K to 30k. The CGT has a safe, but slow way to get started, with your foot off the gas, just ease out the clutch slowing, the ecu manages the throttle and you are off without toasting the clutch. I used this mode exclusively after erring on the safe side trying not to slip the clutch too much and stalling the engine much too often. The safe mode even works well in an incline. Once rolling the CGT shift very nicely, better than a FGT.

Clutch changing photos

Photo 2396 is the first shot of the motor, rumored to be used in the
Panamera.
Photo 2399 is the first photo of the clutch showing the ceramic disk.
Photo 2400 shows the result of slipping the clutch.
Photo 2402 is the transmission. A nice piece of work.

and brakes.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...........!:slap

FGT brakes

Black Ice - You'll have to drive my FGT again. I've never been in a car with better pedal feel at any speed. Extremely firm with zero mush. Only after 20 hard minutes on the track can I feel any softness. The FGT Team members told me the same thing when they tested the car. The brakes aren't touchy but progressive. I can't believe my SVT rotors can make that much difference. We'll switch driving back-to-back between our cars to compare.

Do you think it is the rotors, or because you did a better bleeding job?

pedal firmness

If it's the pedal feel, & the hydraulics are the same; then it is the fluid, integrity of the closed system & amount of water/air in the system.

Did you learn this fact from Empty Pockets? Rumor has it that more gas evaporated that when through his fuel injectors.

That is a false rumor. Since EP never needed to fill the tank. Therefore his GT's flapper valve in the gas filler was sealing correctly and the vapor recovery system was working 100%. But it is rumored he burnt more gas during the cold start cycle than when the engine was warm.

Where's the beef? American cars are about the engine & the FGT definitely showcases the engine. Not only in performance but visually also. The Italian & German cars like to hide the engines under covers, airboxes, intact systems, etc.

After riding/driving the FGT then back to the CGT, my brother said he was disappointed that he couldn't see the engine in the mirror anymore! Being able to see a moving engine part through the FGT rear window is definitely a big plus in my book also.

That must be the labor cost. The clutch alone is $14k.

I was thinking the very same thing

I was told that through the dealer is is close to $25K before you get her back on the road.

Takes care and BTW they are mechanical wonders.

I haven't driven a CGT, but the V10 sounds superb when you're giving it the beans!

The brakes on most (rotors) are ceramic, which should feel quite different to the FGT, although I don't know what brakes are on this one. In general terms I would expect the CGT to handle better than the FGT - however they cost nearly $700,000 when launched in the UK! :eek

CGT is my second favorite car of this decade. Best sounding stock car ever, though too quiet.

I have driven the cars back to back on the track and then some mountain roads. Once you learn to let the clutch engage without giving it gas it becomes much easier to drive in traffic. With the electronic nannies off the PGT has a power curve that can be lethal until you are very familiar. The PGT is tough to rev and heel/toe as the engine drops in revs so quickly. The PGT steering wheel is way too big.

Now that I have listed the faults, that is about all I could complain about, the car is an engineering marvel that is very high quality craftsmanship.

Carrera GT

Derry - the steering wheel is off the 911. Yes, you have to keep the revs up to enjoy the rush. I have 700 RW ft lbs torque on my FGT so I am definitely spoiled (thanks Shadowman!). I wouldn't drive the Porsche without the aids. It is an amazing car. A real race car for the street with very very cool build quality & finish. I loved every second I drove it. I prefer the FGT but, just as DBK posted, the Carrera GT is my second choice in ultimate cars for the road & track. The sound at high revs is heaven.

Ed

Mousecatcher - thanks for letting me sample your Ferrari & Porsche. What next? Your new Lotus Exige GT3? Think we can get away with driving it to Alice's?

when you take the muffler off a CGT the sound is just straight out F1 :club

When you add the FRPP Rear Exit Headers to a FGT, the sound is just straight out of 1966 Le Mans :club
