I've also NEVER, and I stress NEVER heard of an insurance or anybody else for that matter taking that part and trying to retrieve vehicle data off it for legal purposes. I've dealt with probably 100's of wrecked vehicles that have had airbag deployment and never had any of the body shop guys tell me that the insurance company has ever asked for the old part either.
there's a fairly widely known case, about a year ago i think, where 2 teens in a vette claimed they were going some low speed and a car failure caused them to kill someone. the black box proved differently and they were convicted.

which is much older and not the case i was thinking about, but perhaps my memory is bad. in the case linked to above, and the one i'm thinking about (if in fact it's a different case), they could have done without the black box and just used the accident forensics, probably with success. so the black box was just corroborating evidence.
from the info in this thread, it doesn't sound like the gt has such a black box.
