Center Console looks like the heat got to the paint

Ok I don't want to sound uneducated by my question, but is it normal for the paint to look like this on the center console? It looks like it has something under the paint. If its not supposed to be this way what is my best option for a better appearance?

That looks bad. I know that there have been posts about this in the past.

They can be repainted, no?

Kinda looks like paint that has had paint remover sprayed on it.

Has it always looked that way, or is it a recent result of the heat?

It's just another example of poor prep work on the metaling before painting. It can be fixed but you must repair the center consol and properly treat the surface.

As I recall, the base material of the console is magnesium, and requires special processing.

I bought the car from Naples Motorsports in May. This is the way it came.

So should I take it to a body shop or what?

The center consoles are magnesium. Those bumps are from Oxidization on the surface on the magnesium. Magnesium oxidizes in similar way as aluminum.

You might consider a carbon fiber one to replace it and gain some storage space.

Does humidity have something to do with the Oxidation?

My console did the same thing. The paint doesn't adhere well to the magnesium metal. Mine crinkled after using the painter's tape to prevent scatches when I installed the pocket in the console. I was pretty upset when I removed the tape and the paint crinkled. Previous threads I read on this forum years ago said folks tried to paint the console with little success of it not crinkling again. Probably the best solution is carbon fiber like was recommended by GTFUN.

I believe Shelby and/or Bill has successfully repainted the center console. Notwithstanding the magnesium construction, you should be able to repaint it with proper surface preparation. You couldn't do any worse than the manufacturer, that's for sure.

It's starting to grow on me..

Whats the best deal I could get on one of these?

I just called on one, wholesale is like $2500 for OEM

Take it to a reputable Ford Dealership that services GTs and see what they say.

Yes I have successfully prepared and painted several of them

As others shared; the problem is the direct result of the prep work and sealer used prior to the paint or better put; "the lack of it"

Takes care

Be wary of replacing with carbon fibre as the console is a structural part of the car

Isn't the carbon fiber just an overlay?
