Battery Connection Anti-Corrosion Gel and Other Connections Too

Here is a great electrical connection corrosion inhibitor. It's made for electrical connections and is commonly used on your house wiring on aluminum electric conductor wire connections. Aluminum is a great flexible electrical conductor, but it can corrode so this is used to inhibit corrosion. This works great on all electrical connections including the battery post and that pesky GT battery ground to aluminum frame connection. Must be clean to start with. I have found this to be the best, due to it's consistency. Some are too runny. The generic urban term for this is "Cool-Aid".

Gardner Bender OX-400 (4 Ounce), OX-800 (8 ounce). It contains zinc which is a common corrosion inhibitor, such as zinc coated (galvanized) steel and zinc-chromate paint primer commonly used on aluminum. Read more tech specs below. The link may look weird, but it works????

Reviving this thread

I am trying to change battery on my GT and it feels like I am over analyzing.

I plan to remove the battery (just unhook black then red) and how do I remove the battery holder and where is it? I have a diagram of it.

After that, do I remove the ground battery cable connected to the body of the car? And then how should I clean the thing?

Assuming there is a corrosion, do I spray battery terminal cleaner then put ncp2 battery protector?

I attached my kart. What should I take out from it?

Thank you!

Plug in your Ford trickle charger. It will retain the emissions self tests.

Remove frank liner.

Disconnect the battery cables. Wrap the positive with electrical tape so it doesn't short to ground. Remember the trickle charger is attached.

If you want and it cant hurt if not done, check the chassis attach end of ground. Remove paint around it and reattach. I don't think dielectric grease would hurt but I didn't...

Remove the battery hold down. Don't drop the screw or the block. Remember block orientation.

Now the tricky part. Carefully lift the battery straight up without using any fender as a body lever point. Not as easy as it seems. A helper may be necessary

Replace with optima group 25 available at O'Reillys or auto zone.

Reverse to reassemble.

By the way there isn't anything special about this procedure over any other car. It's pretty obvious once you get the trunk liner out. Except for the useful hints about connecting the trickle charger and not leaning on soft aluminum panels

How many times has this been written? I've done it more than once before I re this time. Must be hundreds if battery topics.

Have you looked at any of the battery threads here on the Forum? They are quite explicit.

My battery has been flat for a few months. Should I bother with tender?

You should tie a string to the top of 10718 (on the diagram you posted), the battery hold down bolt. That way, when you drop it, you won't have to take the front splitter off to retrieve it! After you've changed the battery, just leave the string tied up for the next time ...

nope. You'll need to run the drive cycle after putting in the new one, but only if you have emissions and have it coming soon otherwise if you drive it it will run the diags.

Finally had time to work on it. I cant get the battery hold down removed so running to hardware store for a socket. How do I remove that large plastic piece thru that small hole?

You don't remove it. Just loosen it and lift it off the edge of the battery, then wiggle battery to get it away from the plastic wedge. Lift battery out straight up. Check ground and clean attachment point if necessary and add grease if necessary. When ready, drop new battery in and sit in battery tray. Move battery as far forward as possible (only a few millimetres). Drop wedge back down and position over back bottom edge of battery. Tighten down a little and look to see it seats correctly on back edge of battery. Before final tighten down, put trunk liner back in make sure it seats correctly indicating that battery is seated correctly. If liner does not seat correctly it means the battery is not seated correctly and you need to loosen wedge and reseat wedge. You will have to wiggle battery in battery tray, usually forward, until wedge is in the right spot to hold down. The trunk liner is the gauge for correct placement. Once it fits correctly, tighten the hold down bolt, put on cables and put in liner. If not done previously, now is the time to add a pigtail to go to a battery charger.

Thank you sir!

By loosening, I should completely unscrew the tip of the screw from 10732 then rescrew once a new one is in right? Or is there a wiggle room without doing so? It is so hard on my back as I cant lean on the panel and try to reach for it with my neck and back bent 90 degrees. I am not made out to be a mechanic.

No do not unscrew the bolt from the wedge. Just loosen it so the wedge can move towards the rear. When the battery is loose from the wedge just lift it straight out. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE LOTS OF PADDING ON THE FENDER SO YOU DONT DENT IT WITH YOUR ELBOW. Get someone to help you if you can't lift it alone. It only takes a few seconds to lift out and put on floor.

You are the best!

Thank you for teaching me. I am putting a pillow on the fender just in case.

So simply loosening a little from the battery tray without pulling the whole screw out would be enough to get it off?

Not for me.
