Barrett-Jackson Dinner or Bust Day 3
Captain's Log Star Date 01/16/2007 Tucumcari, NM.
9:00 AM Got a solid 8 hours of unbroken sleep. Needed that. 10% off at Dennys next door if I show room key card. What a deal. Talk with a trucker originally from my home state of New York. Blue Skies, 11 stinking degrees. Ice covers everything but the roads. Dry and straight, light traffic. After suitable warm up time, I decide to let "Taurus Red's" massive power plant stretch it's legs. HAMMER DOWN !!!! At 105 mph, the speed limiter kicks in. Why does the speedo say 120 if it will only do 105? I'm writing letters to someone!!! I want some investigations made. I felt just like Kowalski did in the movie "Vanishing Point"
Running 80 mph. Trucks doing 90. 24.3 mpg
11:30 AM Albuquerque, NM. 18 degrees. NOW I know why I drove. The scenery in NM is FANTASTIC ! Have to pull over and take pictures. Never would see this from 30,000 feet. WHAT Idiot wanted to fly out here. Pit stop at gift shop touting the worlds LARGEST buffalo. Big, but also stuffed. What a let down. The next place touts the worlds tenth largest rattle snake. I don't stop. 24.9 mpg.
1:30 PM Somewhere between Albuquerque and Gallup NM. Captain needs a pit stop. WHATS THIS??? Dancing Eagle Casino right across the street from gas and go. Hummmm Hard cash IS getting low. Everything on this safari is costing more than I thought. Maybe I should go play a few hands. WHAT?? 5 dollar single deck? Tonto, reel the line in cause this fish is HOOKED. 20 minutes later, walk out with 100 bucks of the Eagles money. One less day I'll have to sell apples on a street corner in Phoenix to get home. "T R" knocking the miles down. WHAT A MIGHTY TORO. Thank you Ford and UAW workers.
4:15 PM Just inside Arizona border. Decide to push on all the way to Base Station Phoenix. Call John (Mr Blue Moose) and let him know. Call Hotel and can get my room for tonight too. Life is getting better. 29 degrees. Still cold, but can ALMOST handle it. After all, it is a "dry" cold.
6:00 ish PM Had to stop in Two Guns, Arizona. Last time I was there was 40 years ago. Didn't change much Dad.
6:45 Flagstaff, AZ. Back down to 13 degrees. Much snow on the sides of the road. Serious crash. Honda SUV hits ice, rolls, Hope everyone was ok .
Get on I-17 towards Phoenix. Great road, in July, in a GT. 6 degree down grades, twisty corners. SUCKS BIG TIME in January, in a Taurus. With roll over still fresh in mind, back it down to 60 mph. Trucks running 80. 25.5 mpg
9:00 PM Phoenix. Lots of traffic. 53 DEGREES. YEAH, now thats more like it.
Get into a disagreement with GPS. I guess I started it. I turned, when it wanted me to go straight. BUT, then it kept changing it's mind. Turn left here. SEARCH FOR ROUTE. turn right in .2 miles. SEARCH FOR ROUTE. Turn right in 1.0 miles SEARCH FOR ROUTE. ONE MORE TIME I hear SEARCH FOR ROUTE, and GPS is getting out and find Base Station Red Roof Inn Chandler without me. I DO have a MAP in the trunk, and I KNOW how to use it !! UP YOURS STUPID GPS. I calm down and 20 minutes later, I'm in a parking lot across from Base Station Red Roof. Close enough. I'll deal with you in the morning. Check in at Base Station Red Roof. Am told I will have to PAY for internet access. Let me see here; 56 dollar room - FREE WIRELESS ACCESS. 39 dollar room - FREE WIRELESS ACCESS. 85 dollar x 4 nights room - 22 dollar access charge. I'll fix em. I'll fix em good. I'll take an ashtray when I leave !
"Taurus Red" is now mostly white with salt. Will find a car wash in the morning. Air fresheners may be a wise move too. Maybe just maybe, I can park with all the GTs. After everything "Taurus Red" has been through, it would be nice to park with it's elite brothers. 2,081 miles from Base Station 1. 59 mostly happy hours. "LIFE IS A HIGHWAY, I WANNA RIDE IT ALL NIGHT LONG"
Note to self; Post new thread concerning "Operation GT Gum Ball"
Summery
Bad : NOTHING :biggrin
Good : The South West never fails to lift my spirits high. The majestic beauty and ruggedness of this part of the country can not be described in words. WHAT a country we all live in. :cheers
Anyone down here looking for a; Pool Boy, Man Servant, "On Staff" wrench turner, GT polisher? I'm not cheap, but I do have my own health insurance. Well, if the location is right, I may go cheap.
