Captains Log Star Date 01/28/07 Base Station 1, Commerce, Michigan 8:00 AM
11 degrees
13 days, 23 hours, 5,056 miles, 195 gallons or so, 1 stone chip, and 1 quart of 10w-30 later, return "Taurus Red" to point of departure.
The preceding 2 weeks have been a blur. (on second thought, maybe it's Captains eyes).
Spend 4 glorious days in beautiful, unseasonably, unreasonably COLD, base station Phoenix. Think cold is following me. Parties were great, food was good, but above all, the people were what made the safari worth it. Saw old friends, and made new ones. Even turned a few wrench's on GT's. (Larry and John, next time, a 2 day test drive WILL be required) Barrett-Jackson was great. Spend 4 hours at Ford booth, answering questions about GT on display (VIN 0007, built by Captain, and used in his TV debut on the show "Car Crazy" ). GPS now residing in suit case. Can guess at route better. MR. SCOTT, why do we have a "retarded" GPS unit?
Leave base station Phoenix 01/21/07 9:00 AM. 42 degrees, rain.
Rescue co-pilot, (kid brother) from jaws of matrimony minded ex girl friend.
CARNAGE on the highways !! Some where Southeast of Kingman, AZ. Basketball sized killer tumbleweeds attack "T R". Shredded weeds on the road. "T R" - 2 , killer tumbleweeds - 0. Looks like a case of suicide. 51 degrees 26.1 mpg.
Arrive base station "Sin City" 01/21/07 8:00 PM. 46 degrees, cold wind.
Spend next few days "male bonding" with sibling, donating to hotel expansion fund. Dial-up internet in room. 6 TV channels. 55 bucks per night. Spend hours on communicator with pal GTJoey. Love that NY accent.
01/24/07 9:00 AM. Put sibling on flight back to "winter wonderland" Michigan. Have meeting with big brass at Shelby Automotive. Tour Shelby facility, discuss employment opportunity. Have great dinner with good friend and fellow forum member Bart Carter. 62 degrees SUN
01/25/07 8:00 AM. Meet Bart Carter at "Toms Motorsports". Huge shop full of modern and original Shelby AC Cobras in various stages of repair. Discuss employment opportunity. Tom's is a "must see" for devotees of the AC Cobra. 65 degrees, blue skies.
01/25/07 3:00 PM. After obtaining required Vegas trinkets for Grand kids, point "Taurus Red's" bow East for long trip back to snow and ice crap.
01/25/07 11:45 PM. Some where East of Flagstaff, AZ. Stop for night in "Radiator Springs", cutest little town in "Carburetor County". Gateway to "Ornament Valley". 1 gas station, 2 stop lights, 1 working street light, 15 motels.
29 bucks. Free wireless internet. My kind of town. 18 degrees. 26.7 mpg.
01/26/07 11:00 AM. Decide to "press on regardless". Truck stop food, and rest stop sleep. Questioning sanity for being in a rush to get back to base station 1.
01/26/07 Some where in Texas. Stop for coffee at small town cafe. Waitress and 2 elderly patrons cracking up while watching "Dukes of Hazzard" on TV. Can I get a "YEEEEE-HAWWWWW". Catch them eying "T R". Drink quick, leave fast.
01/26/07 11:30 PM. Northeast of Tulsa, OK. Rain, 33 degrees.
Find rest stop for few hours sleep. Get rousted by local constable. "Just Checking" Freezing Rain. DAJA VU all over again !!!
01/27/07 St. Louis, MO. Lots of broken trees from past ice storm. 53 degrees, 26.8 mpg. dry roads.
01/27/07 6:00 PM. 5 miles into Michigan. 28 degrees. Blizzard. White Out. Freezing Rain. Follow line of trucks going 30 mph. "T R" now covered in salt again. Stop in rest area for power nap. 12 hours later, make port at base station 1 Commerce. WHERE THE HELL ARE THE AIR FRESHENERS?
To ALL my wonderful friends in the golden Southwest, who suffered through the recent cold spell, let me say, COME ON UP HERE !! First bag of rock salt is on ME.
I hate the cold.
