The quality of the video screen is pretty amazing, especially when you remember that it's a removeable faceplate. When you pull the plate and look at it in its inert state you think, "Yeah, this is going to have a vivid picture."

But son of a gun, pop in a DVD (or just use the nav system) and it's as bright as any iPod screen I've seen. The "tiltable" functionality of the screen is also a lifesaver, as the GT's titanium center console makes for quite a reflection if the screen is set to the standard vertical mode. But it has four tilt positions, with "3" being about perfect at angling it toward the driver while removing all reflections. Don't forget it's also got audio and video out jacks, so at some point I'll have to plug a larger monitor into it and see how it looks (right now the plugs are wrapped up under the fuse box cover, but that area can be accessed in about 30 seconds).

I'm still just scratching the surface of many of its features (hard drive, bluetooth -- including bluetooth audio functions, and the navigation system), so I'll let you guys know what it's like to live with on an extended basis.

Another completed install

I also just finished my install. Turned out great! I didn't have any success with the VSS signal out of the PCM so I had to buy a speed pulse generator too.
In addition to the Alpine NVE-K300 there is a Kenwood KNA-PG100 and a Pioneer ND-PG1 that all appear to be the same unit with different labels. I found a new Kenwood unit on eBay. I installed it in the passenger foot box near the PCM and magnetized the right front wheel. The directions say to use a rear wheel, but the front works great and I had already routed the speed sensor wire there.

One other tip, the console is very tight for space if you try to feed wires out the back on the right near the HVAC plumbing. I couldn't even stick a finger thru there. I ended up putting the Bluetooth box under the steering wheel, there is more room for wires to enter the back of the console on the left side. so the GPS antenna, Bluetooth mike and cord come in from that side. I ran other wires (speed, reverse) out the back on the drivers side of the console and then behind the HVAC ducts to get over to the passenger foot box.

I also had NO luck finding a male connector to fit into the factory ford harness, so I had to cut the factory harness. I put connectors on the cuts so replacing the factory radio will be a 15 minute job...

Thanks again to Karl for starting this, the pictures saved me!

Excellent Dan! Glad you got yours installed and working. When I think of my total investment (approximately $1,100, including Sirius and Bluetooth receivers, plus the Speed Pulse generator), and then I think of the breadth of capabilities my GT now has, I'm pretty amazed.

The navigation system is better than most factory units I've used. The Bluetooth and Sirius of course work perfectly. I can play audio CDs, video CDs, audio DVDs, video DVDs, MP3s, DiVx files, store music on a 24-gig harddrive and pipe video and 5.1 audio (via optical digital cable) to a separate player with a larger screen if/when I want to. And once I spring for the JVC camera that's just hitting the market and run the video cable, I'll also have a reverse camera. And like you, I've made it all totally reversible. No drilled holes or even sticky pads that will leave a residue if/when removed.

Yeah, it took something close to 30 total hours of time, but that's like saying I "had" to drive the GT on a long road trip or I "had" to spend the weekend detailing it. Both activities are fun as well as educational in terms of learning more about this amazing vehicle. I'm super familiar with the fuse box, gauge control module (including all four of the plugs that make it up) and both footwell areas (including the area under the driver's side dash -- you're right, lots of room up there to run wires and even install components).

Anyway, glad you're up and running. Nothing like catapaulting the GT from stark exotic car to Lexus LS-rivaling techno-wonder in one fell swoop. :banana

It is a very capable system! I told a friend of mine that I magnetized the belts in the tires for the speed sensor and he thought I was nuts! He still doesn't believe me!

I was thinking that a back-up cam could be in my future. There are many license plate frame mounted units that I bet would work, but how the heck are you going to get the cable from the back of the car to the radio? The best way I could find would involve drilling rivets to take the rocker panels off.
Maybe from underneath the car you can get to the harness that goes down the console backbone? I haven't looked there yet.

Keep me posted when you do you install.

I went to Best Buy and looked at the JVC radio today. Did you integrate it into the MAC amp for the sub? I have been tracking your progress for a while, the speed pulse generator was a bugger. Please share how you will route the backup camera. I am getting more brave with each post, thanks guys.

You could always neatly run it through the engine bay and then through the OEM bulkhead grommet on the passenger side which can be accessed by removing the center trim panel which will place the cable under the center console from which feeding it forward should be fine.

Just an idea

Thanks Shadowman I'll have to look closer.

Edson, both Enzo-Btr's and my install were on base radios. so no amp to integrate. There are line out connections from the JVC so I wouldn't think it would be a big problem..but don't quote me! :wink

Faster way to store music onto HDD

Update: I found it too time consuming to read a music CD onto the hard disk. You pretty much have to listen to the whole album in order to get it on the HDD (in either normal or high res mode). Also you had to manually type in the titles and song names. BIG PAIN IN THE *SS!!

There had to be a better way. So, I ripped some music CDs onto a data cd using windows media player to convert to mp3 as part of the rip. Then "copy" the data cd onto the HDD. It works great! :banana The ripping process maintains all of the album, song and artists titles. It takes about the same time to rip and copy 10 albums as it takes to listen to a full CD. It's the only way to go.

Advantages of Mp3 data CD:
-All Album titles and tracks are included.
-faster way to fill up the HDD.

Disadvantage
Not full .wav resolution, but with the little GT speakers, I didn't hear any difference..
If you have 10 albums on the data cd you need to do 10 copy operations but each one only takes 2-3 minutes.

Great tip Dan! I've still only ripped four CDs to the drive, and I did them at full resolution but still had to enter all the song title information. Between the ripping time and the labeling time it took forever...probably why my battery went dead. :willy

I'll try the "pre-ripping" system you described.

Thanks!

I was thinking that the title info was on the CD itself, but it appears that windows media player 11 is getting the info off the web. In any case, I don't have to type it all in.

Just had this unit installed on my car. Still waiting on the speed pulse JVC speed pulse generator to get here (should be end of this week). I had it done by an installer. Everything is about the same except he made a custom plug from an old circuit board so he did not cut the harness (he could not find one to buy). Also he mounted the GPS antenna on the underside of the driver side dash. Finally he mounted the microphone for the Bluetooth on the ceiling inside the door cut out.

So far so good, but no GPS yet. I need the speed pulse setup, unless anyone has any other ideas yet.

I remain curious

I have noticed that several folks that installed this system also installed the back up camera as such a lead had to go to the back of the gal. Why not tie into the speed sensor wire at the transaxle? It is at the driver side upper corner of the unit. Is there a signal issue using this source?

All the best

Not sure if the speed signal works at the transaxle. I didn't make it that far back in the car as I did not do the camera (yet).

My understanding is that the type of speed pulse signals sent through the GT's speedometer system aren't "readable" by the JVC head unit. That suggests the location of where you tap into the speedometer circuit doesn't matter, as the head unit simply won't read it (unless you go very fast -- don't ask me how I know :rofl ).

Thank you

I just figured since the access to the pulse signal at the transaxle is easy that someone would have run a test lead to confirm.

Thanks Enzo Btr and DanQ

After getting valuable help and information from Enzo Btr and DanQ, I was able to get the JVC's Navigation feature to work properly. I ended up mounting the speed pulse unit in the front passenger footwell compartment. The vehicle indicator was all over the place in the first 50 miles but after that it somehow calibrated itself and is now tracking very accurately. Thanks again guys, without you two's help, there's no way my installer and I could have figured this thing out. :thumbsup

Im also about to put this unit in my car, but for me the two most important functions are the rear camera, (I have ordered the one that is build in the license plate frame) and the ipod integration. Has anyone put in the ipod integration kit and does it work well with the ipod menu; what I mean is, is it user friendly, can you bring up the menu and scroll thru the lists quickly. I have an ipod kit im my m5 and it works pretty good but has some draw back. I have a lot of music on my ipod(about 3000 songs) so being able to access the menu via genre, album, song, artist in a quick maner is very important in my application.

My experience has been that an alternate ground point typically will resolve this and if not a filter can be installed to take care of it.

Any good local stereo shop should be able to furnish the later if this is the direction you need to go. It is a common issue when installing systems.

Take a deep breath and relax; this one is easy to fix.

All the best
