Thanks to all the fans of the all-new Ford GT, with more than 180,000 enthusiasts in the U.S. alone having visited the www.FordGT.com site since its launch last Wednesday. Almost 100,000 U.S. fans -- more than half of all visitors to the site -- have checked out the website’s configurator, which lets anyone build the Ford GT of their dreams. The digital tool lets visitors choose the Ford GT exterior colors and stripes, wheel options, types of carbon fiber trim, along with interior themes, and provides links to share images of their virtual build via social media.

The most popular optioned color so far for the all-new Ford GT is Liquid Blue (the same shade that debuted with Ford GT at NAIAS in 2015) followed by Matte Black. The configurator’s default exterior color of Frozen White is also proving exceptionally popular.

Globally, Ford has received more than 7,000 applications in less than a week for the opportunity to purchase the stunning new EcoBoost-powered, carbon-fiber supercar, and Ford encourages anyone interested in owning an all-new Ford GT to apply during the application window, open until May 12 via www.FordGT.com.

I figured Liquid Blue, White and Black (but gloss not matte) would be the most popular...

Wow - 7000 for 500 vehicles. Those are not terrible odds for the first two years of production.

7,000 applications in less than a week. Not to be a killjoy, but the odds will get much longer will each passing hour.

Great to see the overwhelming excitement and interest to own the 2017 GT. I guess all the nay sayers can now go back in hiding. Hahaha!

Regardless of who gets to buy them, this car has already been a total win for Ford. The publicity and enthusiasm for the brand is unlike anything accomplished by another automaker.

AND THE FIRST ONE HASN'T EVEN BEEN IN A MAGAZINE TEST YET.

It does my soul good to see the bean counters pushed aside and true automotive enthusiasm lead a major car company. Maybe some lessons to be learned by the rest...

Knowing how things work on the inside, I suspect the 'bean counters" and all other activities within Ford Motor Company who had involvement in the program had their input included and debated.

I would not equally weight the 7,000 applications. There are less than 4,000 Ford GT owners given the multiple cars owned by many Forum members. Cutting a check for $450,000 plus tax will likely weed out a few applicants as well. Having said that it is nice to see the overwhelming interest in the car and the competition for the first 500 slots will be intense.

According to the "fine print", the application process is for 150 GT's a year, for two years. There has been NO mention of additional units being sold that are not part of the application car program. So there must be a very special friends and family list. That I am not on!

I thought it was going to be a 4-5 year production, with about 200 per year. So the 1st 2 years 100 for special VIPs, 300 allocated to the vetting process. What's going to happen to the cars made after year 2?

Someone from Canada said their site said "250 worldwide". I've asked Ford if the 150 number represents the US allocation (meaning 100 cars for the rest). No answer yet.

It's a minimum of 150 built each year. I brought this point up on the McLarenLife site when application process started.

Ford is conducting the Program in connection with the upcoming introduction of the 2017 and 2018 Ford GT supercars (each a “GT” and collectively, “GTs”). Ford intends to manufacture very limited quantities of the GT and to make available via the Program a minimum of one hundred and fifty (150) 2017 GTs and a minimum of one hundred and fifty (150) 2018 GTs. Because Ford anticipates that there will be more potential purchasers than there are available GTs, Ford intends through the Program to select individuals who will be invited to discuss a potential purchase of a GT on terms to be agreed to by the seller and the purchaser.

Just a reminder from the Dingman auction description of #002 Black 2005 GT

Chassis numbers 01 through 09 were reserved for “internal use” by Ford, following a long tradition of those first examples being offered mainly to Ford family members and certain executives.

Mr. Dingman served on the Board of Directors of the Ford Motor Company for over two decades, helping steer the Blue Oval through some of the most difficult periods in its existence. In appreciation of his service and dedication, he was offered the opportunity to acquire one of these special reserve vehicles. On the order form sent to Mr. Dingman on May 18, 2004, a handwritten notation in the offering letter reads “car #2.” Subsequent paperwork includes the dealer order, dated October 13, 2004, the dealer invoice from Portsmouth Ford, dated October 14, 2004 and the original title, dated December 8, 2004. It is believed that chassis 01 is retained directly by Ford Motor Company, making chassis number 02 the lowest numbered example of a Ford GT that will likely ever be offered to the general public.

Definitely.

Interesting topic- between wrecked/salvage GTs and owners with multiples are there maybe 3000 owners? Original owners that still have one- less than 1000?
Original owners that want to buy one and have the means- how many do you guys guesstimate?

I'd actually be curious to know the details of this aspect of the car's approval. I know Mark Fields is a huge GT fan (he has a 2005 model, red/white stripes) and this car was clearly in the works before Mulally left. Bill Ford is obviously a fan too (he also has a past GT, I think the white one from the three 2004s that were made).

There's no doubt the leadership of the company wanted to do the new GT. How hard they had push to get it through the board and finance department is anyone's guess. But I would suggest the car represents minuscule real revenue. Like the last one, it will pay for itself. But like the last one, it won't be a source of meaningful income. That means it had to be justified on a non-financial basis (what I call the "can't measure on a spreadsheet" factor). Those projects are usually quite challenging to get through the "system" of a major automaker.

But maybe it was easy at Ford. Either way, it's great for them and something other automakers could/should learn from.
