Now that you mention it, I do remember Smothers driving in the Greenwood Vette.

Cobrajeff, that's got to be the cleanest 289 in existence. People forget how beautiful the 260/289s lines were because of all the 427 replicas running around. What a gorgeous car.

To an old guy like me, wire wheels with knockoffs still look great - :thumbsup

I did not remember the stance being that high above the tires on the original slab sides. That is a beautiful car.

They were pretty small and narrow tires as I remember.

The 289 cars had leaf springs and it's possible the springs on the pictured car do not have the same arch as oem. I was never able the get the correct oem ride height on the back of my 1964 Lincoln after I replaced the springs.

Cobras with buggy springs

Getting the ride height where you want it on a small-block Cobra with transverse-leaf springs is a real bear. Everyone I know who's had their Cobra springs rebuilt has had issues trying to get the ride height where they'd like it to be.

I thought CSX2367 looked like it was sitting high, too, however, after looking again at a couple Cobras displayed near it in 2003, THEY look like they are sitting up there, too.

CSX2367 appears to be sitting lower these days (photo from 2012)........................................... compared to back in 2003:

Tommy, what a great old photo, is that in front of your families original dealership? Who's driving? The stance on that car and the white car in Cobrajeff's post look correct to me. My Dad was a Ford dealer, and I remember when these were new coming through his dealership. I was only eight but do remember them quite well. I remember some customer ordered a 427 Competition Cobra, and I got to hear it start up in the shop. It was absolutely deafening and left an indelible impression on me. Felt like the floor and walls were shaking.

Picture was taken in 1964 in front of our original Ford Dealership. The first 289 Cobra was delivered to the dealership by a friend of my father who flew to Venice, Cal. and drove it to Texas City, Texas. My father pictured in the Cobra was about three years older than Carroll Shelby and could pass as his brother. When I showed Carrolls family a picture of my father at the Memorial service they were shocked. Both were from Oklahoma, with high cheek bones, jet black hair and had Indian features. They both said they were part renegade Indian and were both run out of Oklahoma at a young age. This Cobra was Princess Blue with Red interior with 2 fours and was later turned into a race car with webber carbs and flared fenders. I still have the English Hub Hammer used to remove the wheel spinners and the jack out of the Cobra. We raced for 2 years then sold it and it was totaled six months later in Houston.

Jeff,

Could you post any pictures you have of the blue Mk IV shown in the upper right corner of the 2012 photo of CSX2367?

Except for it being totaled, what a great story.

Continuation FORD GT Mark IVs

Paul -

The Viking Blue Ford GT Mk IV is Fran Kress's J-13, one of seven Mark IV "continuation" cars built by Kar Kraft. They are incredibly detailed and accurate in every respect.

WRT the ride height of CSX2367, I got a note from Joe explaining that when that first picture was taken in 2003, the car was fresh from restoration, and had not been driven enough for the suspension to settle.

regards,

Jeff
