BTW, the article by Don Sherman about the 66 LeMans winners says George Stauffer sold the car for $20MM+. Isn't that a record, not just for a GT40, but for a Ford, or any American car?

Yeah, I think so, and by a significant margin. The 68 Gulf Mirage car sold for $11 million a couple years ago. Can't find anything higher than that. I would think there's a reasonable debate to be had over which of the 3 overall winners from 66-69 is worth the most.

When Kauffman bought the car, I figured he had to pay $20m+ to get it based on what significantly less historically relevant GT40s had been going for.
 
The 68-69 winner/1076 is owned by one of the Waltons, no? I'm guessing if/when next time it's on the block, it'll be record $$.
