WTB - Harley Davidson Sportster

Since the 40 year crises came a bit late to me, I´m a bit late looking for a Harley But better late than never. Since my fellow FGT Forum friends are known for hoarding cool stuff in their garages why not ask here to see if anyone has one or knows someone who does ....

I´m looking for what is pretty much a stock and bare bones peanut tank Sportster (883/1000/1100). Could be anything from the XLX61 base bikes from 1983-85, the cool "street race" 83/84 XR1000 or maybe 86/87 883 or 1100

I love those things. I bought my first peanut tank Sportster in 1979 and 3 others since. I think the Sportster 48 is the only new bike that H-D still makes with that original 2 gallon tank. My current 48 looks almost identical to that first 1979. Below are a couple pictures of me when I had hair, of Charley on his mini Sportster at age 2, and my current Sportster. Nothing like the freedom of the open road that better have a gas station every 95 miles! Cheers!

Those are great stories and very cool pictures.

I like the way the older sportster looks higher and slimmer ... and correct me if my knowledge of HDs is off but to me they stopped that look in the late eighties right?

Just as with cars - I hope to find that bike that has been with a caring owner since new, with a reasonably low amount of miles on and in original unmolested condition ...

Is there any of the HDs models through the years I’m missing here?

Looking for simple and clean design - single seat and no farings etc

That hunt ended quickly .... bought a 452 mile 1983 XR1000 in mint condition from a local bike collector. The danish collector bought it out of an estate back in 2017 with only 163 miles on the clock. All original papers come with the bike which I think is really cool.

I know a newer Sportster would be a better bike but I like the simplicity and vintage look of this early .... and the XR1000 is a fairly rare bird with interesting history.

Only flaw is that I need to fix is a new right rear blinker housing - for some reason that is damaged in the chrome. Anyone know a good source to go to for original parts?

I'd kill to have an XR-1000. Are you going to ride it? IF I found a sub 1000 mile example like that I'd put it in my living room.

Yeah it a pretty rare find. Picked it up today from seller and it is beautiful.

I could easily have settled for a base XLX sportster from same years but didn´t find any that were stock and in top condition. I agree with you that this is pretty much a collectors quality bike - but I do think some are still to be found. Not sure what you would consider a fortune for a bike like this. Including taxes and registrationtax I´m just short of 21K. I think that is a lot for an old bike - but since it is so perfect, original and rare I´d rather pay 21K for this than for a 4-6 year old XL883 Iron. Just like any other type vehicle, bikes are taxed quite heavy here in Denmark - until they turn 35 years and fall under the vintage tax rules. In the long run I think a classic like this will be the better financial choice for me
