who runs a Ford Racing header/exhaust system?

I am still trying to decide which exhaust system to install on my GT. :confused

I know there are more than a few members who have a Ford Racing exhaust system installed on their GT's.

I have done a bunch of searching on the forum but cannot find the specific part number(s) used by each member who has a Ford Racing header/exhaust system.

Apparently SHOBOAT has a Ford Racing header/exhaust system…which one is it (9430-GTX or 9430-GT + 5230-GT muffler kit)? I also noticed that Sinoval and Fubar also have Ford Racing exhaust systems.

Much appreciated if members could let me know which Ford Racing header/exhaust system they have installed on their GT's + part numbers...and comment on what you like or dislike about your system.

:cheers

Two system

1. Long tube headers + Borla racing muffer = louder
2. Rear exit headers (no muffer) = loudest!

#2 is the loudest system I ever heard 1st hand on a GT!!!

Thanks for the reply :thumbsup So if I understand correctly the systems are as follows:

1. Ford GT Long Tube Headers M-9430-GT + Ford GT Performance Muffler Kit M-5230-GT

2. Ford GT Rear Exit Headers M-9430-GTX

Is the Ford GT Performance Muffler Kit M-5230-GT referred to as the Borla racing muffler?

What system do you have BlackICE?

From Ford Racing, there are two systems to choose from. The Rear Exit Headers is a COMPLETE exhaust system. The headers come back into a Borla "collector muffler" (hardly does much "muffling") and then the system bends around the transaxle and has the Borla patented large tips.

The other Ford System is the Ford Long Tube Headers. This system is comprised of headers which consume the space of where your stock cats are but have the exact same turn-up and bolt pattern to bolt up to your stock muffler or an aftermarket muffler including the Borla muffler also sold by Ford Racing. Note that you can also simply swap you factory muffler for the Ford Racing muffler if you don't want to install the headers. Here are some examples for illustration. (Quietest to loudest)

1. Stock manifolds, stock cats, add Ford Racing (aka Borla) Muffler
2. As above, but replace stock cats with "cat test pipes"
3. Stock manifolds, stock cats, add Heffner, Accufab, or Stillen Pipes
4. As above, but replace stock cats with "cat test pipes"

As for Ford Header-based solutions; (Note that with both of Ford's header systems, the factory cats are deleted as there is NO ROOM for them.)

1. Ford Long-tube headers, (no cats), + stock muffler
2. Ford Long-tube headers, (no cats), + Ford Racing (Borla) muffler
3. Ford Long-tube headers, (no cats), + Heffner, Accufab, or Stillen Pipes

4. Ford rear-exit headers, (no cats), Collector muffler part of system

Finally, both Stainless Works and JBA have alternative header solutions for the GT as well as an option for CATs - though neither make claims to have the same cat efficiency as stock. (Stock cats are huge!)

Hello nota4re,

Which combination do you think is the most common for street use only GT's?

I totally understand it will a matter-of-opinion but just want to see what most members use.

Any idea what SHOBOAT's combination is on the Exhaust Compialtion thread http://www.fordgtforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3051

Thanks for the input :banana

The louder M-9430-GTX not only saves additional weight, but also improves the cooling air flow through the engine compartment by not placing a heat source (a muffler or hot X pipes) in a position to block the exiting air. On the track, this is important for improved cooling, especially when the license plate is removed to allow the large hole it covers to be exposed, thus opening a large exit vent.

Thanks for comments. How loud would #3 (3. Ford Long-tube headers, (no cats), + Heffner, Accufab, or Stillen Pipes) be? At all streetable?
Thanks for your input.

Hey Ralphie:

I have spoken with you about your system via email and was hoping that you could answer my additional questions.

Do you recommend your system for street use or is it meant more for track?

By far, I think the most popular is to keep the stock manifolds and cats and to replace the 55 lb muffler with a ~11 lb Accufab, Heffner, or Stillen "exhaust". This saves a lot of weight, removes a huge heat source from the engine bay, improves engine bay airflow, and gives you a much more authoratative exhaust. For even more sound volume (and less engine-bay heat) the Ford Racing (or Stillen) CAT delete pipes can be added at the same time or later.

In lieu of using an Accufab, Heffner, or Stillen exhaust (which are really just nicely manufactured pipes - and not mufflers), you could instead choose to replace the 55lb OEM muffler with the "two/thirds" size/weight Borla muffler. It is much quieter than the Accufab/Heffner/Stillen but a little bit louder than stock.

As many here know, I had the Ford Racing Rear Exit Headers on my GT for the first year. This is a great exhaust, especially for blipping the throttle in parking lots and car events. However, it was SOOO loud that I found myself seldom punching the car for fear of attracting unwanted law enforcement attention. I think that the set-up above would also sound great but would likely turn out to be too loud over time.

SPD, the thing you want to avoid if you're street or highway driving is drone. It's particularly bad at around 2000 RPM (about 80 mph in 6th). The Borla has no drone as a standalone sytem. Most of the X or H pipes have a little or some drone. The header systems can develop a lot of drone. They all sound good, just go from stock quiet to monster, illegally loud. Seems like the twin turbo guys are going back to the stock mufflers. I have the Borla muffler and have been very pleased.

I have the second Ford option ...

2. FFRP Long-tube Headers (No Cats) + FFRP (Borla) Muffler.

These have all been Ceramic coated in a flat black finish for further heat dissapation.
I find the sound very tolerable on the street as long as you're shifting before 3000 rpm. After that level, it's pretty much called racing - isn't it? :wink

If you cool, and want the best of all worlds,... you will run the SHADOWMAN version of the STAINLESS STEEL WORK headers with baby cats and get the special GUMBALL wrap... :)
