I recieved my notice in 1970, I went to Fort Wayne in Detroit to receive my physical. I arrived as directed at 5:30 am and spent the day running from one room to another until I found myself midday still only wearing my skivvies in line to see a heart specialist. I was examined more and told that I would not be drafted due to a heart murmur.
I knew I had Rheumatic fever as a child, but was never told I had a heart murmur. I got a 1-Y temporary classification and then received a 4-F which said I was not wanted due to physical defects!
I was prepared to go, but never accepted.
My father and 4 uncles all served in the ARMY, Dad was a Staff Seargent in the 13th armaored division. He served in Italy, France and Germany from 1941 to 1945. He drove a half track in the latter portion of his service.
He received the Bronze star, Purple heart and other lessor medals.
My Father-in-law was in the Army during the same period. My mother-in-law was a Rosey the riveter at the Willow Run airport building the b-24 's
My mom worked in a chroming plant making parts for the Compasses.
My brother went in and served 4 years in Germany from 1972-1976. He wound up as a driver for one of the Generals over there. Chrome helmet, White gloves White Rifle, Pressed Dress and spit polish. He had a job just detailing his uniform everyday. He was a Defensive driver instructor before leaving

I have many friends that never came home from Vietnam. I also had 2 that came home physically but not mentally and miss them both to this day. Many of my fellow classmates and buddies served in Nam. They were My true heroes. Many years of guilt for not having served while they did
Thanks to all of you that served.

You would have served if you had been allowed. You WEREN'T allowed thru no choice or doing of your own. Your feeling of guilt is - and always was - totally unwarranted. 'Long past time to let it go, sir. :wink :cheers

:skep Nor WILL YOU be able to do so. :slap

It actually transpired in Dam Neck, Va, and aboard a DE off the coast of a small island in Hawaii that the USN uses as a naval gun range. But, I can certainly understand how a delusional soul like yourself formed an erroneous opinion of such grand proportions. :tap:

(...I hope yew CHOKE on yer next Bananas Foster.:lol)

Well at your age, one can see where Hawaii and Cuba can be confusing... they are both islands and all. :lol

God bless you all.

As a side note - to anyone who watched the new Transformers movie and saw the base in Diego Garcia - that is NOT Diego Garcia!

I spent 24 hours on Diego Garcia, before doing a carrier landing on the Carl Vinson, so know what you are saying.:thumbsup

Personally, I never had the privilege of serving despite being born into a family with a long military history. Father was a navigator in Royal Canadian Air Force before spending 3 yrs in Stalag Luft 3 prison camp (where the Great Escape was from. He never met Steve McQueen or James Garner though).
Uncle, whom I was named after, was killed in Sicily at age 19 in WWII.

Thanks to all who fought for the great freedoms we enjoy.
