A replacement transmission for the Veyron costs just over $120,000. It also has permanent four wheel drive using the Haldex Traction system. It uses special Michelin PAX run flat tyres, designed specifically to accommodate the Veyron's top speed, which reportedly cost $25,000 US per set.[2] The tyres can only be removed from the rims in France, a service which reportedly costs $70,000.

I don't know what marvel of engineering requires a car owner to send his wheels to France to replace them at $70K. Reminds me of sending your iPhone in to have the battery replaced. That is not engineering that is ridiculous followed by a consumer willing to throw $$$ away.
In contrast the tires on the space shuttle cost $5,560 each, the maximum allowable load per main landing gear tire is 123,000 pounds, and they are rated at 258 mph -similar speed to the Veyron.

I think there is a bit more engineering that went into the Space Shuttle than what went into the ugly engineering marvel.
