I might be buying that car. I just got back from my second visit to Superformance in Irvine, and with a little massaging of the seat bottom (and a Gurney bubble) I can actually fit in the car! Build quality is ridiculously good, and the paint looks waaaaay better than Ford's (sorry).

The good news is that within a couple of months we will have two new options for transaxles for these cars, from Mendeola AND Quaife, ending the two-year waitlist for RBT transaxles, or the desperate rebuilding of 930 boxes. With the Roush GT engine packages finalized and shipping, it's going to be a great year to do a GT40 replica.

Just a suggestion.

Take a look at all of the pictures of wrecked GT's. Some of them appear to be quite catastrophic. Of all of the wrecks I am aware of, there doesn't appear to be an equivalent amount of damage to the occupants.

A basic questions one has to ask themselves when evaluating a vehicle of this caliber has to deal with safety. Some may believe that our driving skills increase measurably with a cash deposit and we become the reincarnation of Fangio, Gurney, Andretti, et al. But what happens if we look at risk mitigation? The vehicles may look similar, but do they have the same build characteristics? Will you be walking away to see another day?

My assumption is that the structural integrity of the Ford GT comes with zero question marks - bar none.

Kingman - For what it's worth, I've seen Lance's Superformance GT40 MkII after it hit a tree head-on at 50mph. The entire front structure was destroyed, with a 14-inch diameter tree-shaped crater extending rearward to within a foot of the windshield, but the windshield was intact and the doors still closed.... amazing testament to the crumple zones (such as they are) designed into the original GT40 tubs from the start. Obviously, the car was totalled, but Lance only received a bad shaking, no injuries. 4-point belts, no airbag. No way as safe as a new GT, but encouraging. Fuel cells and rollcage are now available, btw....

Part of why I started leaning towards the Superformance replica GT40 instead of the new GT is that I think that the replica, with all of its fuss and noise, will feel much more dramatic and exciting at slightly lower (and hopefully less lethal) speeds. I fear that a new GT is such a monster, and so massively "up to the task" that I will never have the stones to drive it in that sweet area near the edge of its performance envelope, where things get slippy and you have to fight a little. I can get a lot closer to that edge in my Elise, and one can have an absolute blast in THAT car between 40 and 60mph, which I fear would be a complete and total non-event in the new GT.

Kayvan - The CAVs are wonderfully built and engineered, and, like the Superformance, are only provided as turnkey-minus rollers, fully plumbed and painted, but they are not quite true to the original design. The tub is stainless, and has been modified for greater headroom and footroom, and there are many other changes in suspension geometry and such to modernize the chassis. The CAV body, as with many others, is not quite true to the original in a couple of minor areas. It is, like the all-aluminum Race Car Replica cars, a modernized take on the original chassis, and because of this can easily be dialed in to full modern-day race spec.

The Superformance chassis, however, is exactly the same as the 1960's original, warts and all, with the same welded steel tub, zero footroom, and utterly stiff construction. Their bodies are completely accurate, the cars have continuation serial numbers, and are eligible for GT40 and Shelby registries and such. Their paint, fit, and finish are just great. Much lower than anything on the road (the seat bottom IS the floorpan), and running a basically uncorked Roush 353 injected lump in a 2250-pound car, the thing "has five first gears".

I went into the replica GT market with an open mind, prepared to have an RCR car built to spec, but when I saw the finished Superformance car, my mind was made up.

It is the real deal.

Choosing between the new GT and the replica is driving me nutz. I don't think I can rationalize BOTH at the moment, so I'm kind of wondering which to do first... The wife says she'll never ride in the replica, too scary.... (is that a good thing?), and actually wants me to get a new GT or even a GTX1 for nice long drives to the Valley of Fire and such (which would be utterly punishing in the replica, or even the Elise...) The replica might be a little better in the tightest of Malibu canyons, but the noise will certainly not make me any friends with my neighbors... whereas the new GT will actually offer a passenger seat and some touring-style comfort. Plus, GT prices are on the rise, and warranties are running out... hmmm....

Advice? Anyone have both?

Of course, I've never driven either the new or old GTs, so what do I know? I have a 190hp Elise!

a point of advice

I have a seriously modified 74 Pantera, which is a similar but not exact feel to the original GT. It was built based on that design spec etc. I can tell you that there is such a huge difference between the Pantera and the FGT that it isnt even funny. The Pantera is one of the nicest out there (If I can say so myself) but even as nice as it is I am reminded that its 74 technology. its hot, rough, abusive but God so much fun! The FGT is smooth fast clean, Ford has done such an outstanding job, extreme fun in a different way. I assume that the experience between the Superformance and the FGT would be the same. IMO if you can only buy one get the FGT. If you can do both...rock on!

That’s a very difficult place to be - decision - the FGT “real deal”? Or a very realistic and honest replica?

The decision, of course, must be yours alone.

I do not know your circumstance; but if I were to be put in the same situation I would go for the new FGT.

It is what it is.

First off, thanks for the advice... even from such obviously biased sources! :)

I absolutely LOVE the fact that the GT and the GT40 are such different animals. I can put up with a little smoke, heat, and drama (check my sig for evidence of Mopar stupidity!), but there is a compelling argument for striking the Ford GT iron while it is still hot... the replicas will still be here next year... FGTs may be getting into unobtainium pricing by then, who knows?

Circumstances are good, despite the writer's strike, which actually might give me the time to attend many more track days this spring... hence my attraction for the replica, where I could run roughshod over Willow Springs in many midweek events, safe in the knowledge that a new front clam for the replica is only $2500...

I'm sure I'd hold back just a little more in the FGT than in the replica, out of a mixture of fear and respect!

That said, wifey actually endorses the FGT.... so..... anybody got an '05 Quicksilver they want to part with? :)

I have heard that the ERA was the best of these companies. Is this true? What about Roaring 40s out of Australia?

ERAs are amazing, body is correct, unfortunatey I think the wait time is something like two years for one of these truly fine hand-built replicas. I believe they are not entirely accurate copies, as far as chassis, but bodies are first-rate and accurate IIRC. In the end, the ERA was too long of a wait for me.

Superformance really has it down to a science. They are built at Hi-Tech in South Africa, along with their authorized Cobra replicas, Daytona coupes, and the Noble. Hi-Tech puts out 50+ cars a month. That's a pretty big operation they've got going.

Roaring 40s is, I believe, no more. Somewhat of a shakeup in the Oz replica marketplace I think. Not sure if they renamed, reformed, or what. There are also Tornado and GTDevelopments (spaceframe cars) doing business as well...

All of the companies currently doing business have fine products, and CAV, RCR, and the others all have neat ideas that take the GT40 concept to different extremes. It seems that Superformance have gone the "completely, painfully authentic" route, CAV have gone the "makes sense to me" route, RCR have gone the "hi-po billet and TIG work-of-art" route, and others have gone for spaceframes in the interest of repairability and roll-cage-ability. Just my opinion as an observer...

By the way, visit www.race-car-replicas.com and your jaw will drop when you see the 917, Lola, and SuperLight cars they do.... just ridiculously cool stuff. I want one of each!!!

Keep in mind, I'm just a spectator with a fast internet connection and no fabrication skills!

For the guys with tools, shop space, and experience, the finish-it-yourself cars (RCR etc.) are a great option. I have seen some utterly sick, totally personalized builds that guys are doing over at this site, under the "Build Logs" section...

The Superformance is beautiful. I was thinkin of one myself. If I have extra $$$ I may get one. I love them. Only down side. The windows don't go down:frown

I love the FGT as much. What swayed me was the fact that the FGT was limited production and I think will be, and haven't found anyone who disagrees a collectible in years to come.

I thought the FGT was the better "investment" if you will. No brainer on that score.

Charlie, I have spent countless hours doing the same thing (which GT40 replica is better) and came to the same answer as you. They all do something different. I almost went with the CAV because it is more modern but probably will end up with the SPF. I figure if I want to go modern I'll take the FGT and if I want to cook my brains out, hurt my back and make a bunch of noise all while having a ton of fun I'll take the GT40.:thumbsup

The superformance car is based on the CAV. Something you guys in cali need to remember is that you have to have one of the SB100 numbers, of which only 500 per year are given, to get the car on the street.

Its neat that the cars are really close to the originals in looks..personally I would get another GT. They are tight and loud...I'm kind of done with that.

I have seen some of hte cars that the paint wasn't that good on..personally I think the paint on the GT is great..There was a car here locally in the MKII body style that was in the rain and the water came throught the roof lovers...they had about 2" of water in the floor and seats were soaked...took a while to dry out.

What I've always said on any replica is if its what you want and you are happy then who gives a S%($ what anyone else says.

My Dad and I have a SPF GT-40 and a FGT, I can tell you with no hesitation they are two completely different cars! I don't even know where to start a comparison. Do you have any specific questions I could answer?

Of course you could just fly out here to Phoenix and we can go for a run.

Anyone planning to buy a Superformance in California, be careful, their car is not a kit car, but a roller. Huge difference. Be happy to talk to anyone about it. Be very careful. Superformance is on the DMV's radar screen.

Was that you who posted the pic on gt40s.com of the tungsten MkII GT40 and the white FGT on track? Obviously, they have little in common except the shape... and the power! I kind of get it about the differences between them, the problem is, as you know, one simply must find a way to have both!
