FYI.....You could run with the trunk tub completely out of the car. Also saves 14 lbs as I recall. With no seals it may let some of that hot air out around the gaps of the hood.

i removed the screens for a shelby club track weekend last sat/sunday at elkart lake and was shocked. with the same ambient temps as last year i ran about 10 degrees cooler and that made the driving much more enjoyable. i only backed off once in 20 minute sessions because of 235 temp and that was the time i was using 2nd gear out of 3 corners vs. only one corner. this is an easy step to get you a temp advantage when you put the car on the track. i would not have believed that the screens were this much of a restriction but these guys do know what they are doing.

Interesting info. The wife and I drove that shelby club event at RA on Sunday. Temps were never over 220, but I'm stock (except trans cooler, trans vent, accufab intake stiffener), no pully, stock tires. Some 2nd gear corners 5, 8, sometimes 3, 14. I wasn't driving 10/10ths so I had lifts in 7, the kink, 13... I will add the accufab springs in the radiator hoses when I flush the fluid.

Heard about the crashed GT earlier so we took it easy. I'm glad I haven't had any overheating issues. knock on wood.

Speaking of tracking your Gt .I would recommend a better than stock dot 3 brake and clutch fluid. You might also want to put in better brake pads , as well as those titanium backing plates Wally had made up .
Remember brakes only slow you down !!! But its nice to have em when you need them !!
Think of it as viragra for your brake pedal !!

I was also at the Historic Races at Elkhart Lake this July and also saw the Ford GT engineering test car. Although I did not speak with the engineers, I did notice the following other modifications that I think are worthy.

1) Modified air inlets in front grill so they are functional and duct air to front rotors. This requires re-routing air conditioning hoses if you keep A/C.

2) A 3/8 inch wicker on the forward edge of the air duct coming out of the radiator and onto the hood. This creates a low pressure area after the radiator allowing for better air flow through the radiator.

Seems like I remember hearing that the delevopment engineers had that lip on the car, but dropped it from the production vehicles because they didn't see any effect in the wind tunnel and or dyno. However, the test drivers felt that it did drop the engine temps on the track. As soon as I saw this post about the test car on the track, I looked immediately for that strip as I was wondering if they still had it on the car. Kip Ewing has discussed making a similar item in carbon just for that reason.

Stillen has a similar item on their car.

A Kip CF one would be pretty cool. (no pun intended)

The yellow car DBK posted up the other day featured something similar:

The original GT40's also used lips ahead of the radiator ducts to create a low pressure area for increased air flow.

By the way, the 1966 Le Mans blue #2 Mark II with the Gurney bubble is the Gurney/Grant car.

As Nielda points out we noticed that feature on the yellow Nardo car that will be sold at RALLY III...
hello KIP, would look great in CF!

I so love these pictures and the era that they evoke....

One wonders how special it felt at the time. Probably moderately! Hindsight certainly keens the emotions. Wonderful.

Agreed!!! Thank you for posting such great pics of the cars showing exactly what we're talking about.

Also interesting to see that the JWA P/1075 had only one fuel filler neck - like our present cars...

And the "high-tech" fuel rig!

Greetings all

Yes, this was something that we played around with during development.
It didn't conclusively help cooling. The limiting factor is the air pressure drop across the cooling pack, not aerodynamics at the exit.

I had patterns about finished to do these Gurney Flaps in carbon, but the demand on the new stuff has kept me too busy to finish the parts.

These in carbon, plus a few other things in development (yes, including the luggage) will be completed this fall after the Rally.

They may not help cool the car any, but they look killer.
Count on these soon.

Thanks to everyone.
I've had near zero sleep over the past two months, but I really appreciate everyone's support and patronage.

See you in Sin City in a couple of weeks.

Cheers
Kip

Oh Kippy, I can get you what you need to sleep for some carbon fiber. Call it "bartering." Dr. Frank

Yeah, but just make sure what you give him isn't for THE BIG SLEEP! I need still need him.

Kip, now never mind Gulf GT. He's got all of your goodies and I'm forever trying to keep up. We'll see how far behind I am in LAS.
