Gentlemen,

Last week our good friend and fellow member Ray Hofman flew into the Scottsdale airport to have lunch with yours truly on his way to the Reno air races in his beautiful P-51D Mustang Boo Man Choo. At my request Ray and his instructor pilot did a low-level flyby 10 feet above the runway at over 400 miles an hour. It sounded awesome and looked even better though it did raise the ire of the control tower personnel who were not quite as thrilled with it as I was. I was not able to join Ray and company in Reno as I was in College Station, Texas with my son Charley attending the A&M football game.

This morning however was the next best thing. The owner/pilot of unlimited Reno air race Mustang "Precious Metal", Thom Richard, flew into the Deer Valley Airport in North Phoenix and we had breakfast. Thom is from Switzerland and has dreamed about flying in the Unlimited Class at the Reno Air Races since he was a small child. That is what prompted him to move to America and he finally realized that lifelong ambition. Thom is one of Ray Hofman's instructor pilots and it was Ray who introduced him to me.

Following a very interesting breakfast Thom took me back to the hangar containing Precious Metal and gave me a detailed tour of the aircraft, allowing me to crawl into the cockpit and fire up the avionics. This is the only Mustang running at Reno that uses the Griffin V-12 engine. It is larger and has more displacement than the Merlin engines used by all other Reno Unlimited Mustangs. His is also the only Mustang that utilizes a six blade counterrotating prop. Unfortunately, just prior to leaving for Reno, and after 6000 man-hours were invested in building and preparing it, his race engine seized a bearing and could not be repaired in time. So Thom went to Reno with well-worn ferry engine in his clipped wing P-51 and still managed 6th Place in the Unlimited Gold Class. He will be back next year and I will certainly be there as well. All the best.

Chip

I see that "Precious Metal" is an earlier P-51, with the faired in canopy, as opposed to the "bubble" canopies, such as on the P-51D's. The earlier models are quite rare!

That "six blade counterrotating prop" is wicked. What a machine.

Ralphie,

It is a P-51D but the canopy and the airframe have been extensively modified to reduce drag. The wings are clipped two feet on each side as well.

Glad you guys hit it off Chip! I thought you would :biggrin

Here is a video of the Air Races where you can get a brief insight to the excitement of flying around the pylons... note that these guys are over 500 mph and 50ft off the ground!

Precious Metal, as Chip has explained, is a heavily modified P-51D... in fact Thom hand made the canopy itself and the airplane has a lot of modifications in order to help it to go fast. I attached a picture of me flying in formation with Thom on the way back to Midland. In cruise it worked ok but on the descent he was at minimum power and I was almost at maximum to keep up! His airplane has the H tail and the attach angle straightened out as with the contra-rotating props there is now no need to have the tail compensate for slipstream and the tendency to turn left... so the tail is much higher than the D model... sounds wicked in the air as well :thumbsup

Thanks as well to Chip for helping me achieve my dream of piloting a P-51! Chip, Fred, Jay, James and Thom all took me under their "wing" as a newb and guided me to where i am today! Thank you all!

Wow. That is so cool. I am definitely moving to Texas next year and will fly for food.

Ray,
Anytime you want to bring your P-51 to Yuma, I would be happy to show you all the Harriers you care to see.

Awesome!

Happy to trade rides (or just give you a ride!) - in the only (one that I know...) L39 with a Garrett TFE731...

Gentlemen,

Last year Ray and I talked about a GT Forum fly in at his beautiful hanger in Midland, Texas. We have a lot of pilots with amazing aircraft here and I know it will be a blast. I will get moving to set a date and make it happen. I expect Jason (Waldo) to show up with a USMC Harrier!!!

Are we allowed to attend if we drive and stay on the ground, or must we fly in?

HAHA that is so bad ass Waldo!!

I think a trip to Yuma is definitely in order!!!

Bill - a buddy of mine just bought a L39 and we are getting it to Midland this week... would love to hear more about yours and see some pics. I want to get one as soon as i get enough total time to satisfy the FAA requirements and have been looking at some of the L59 and L139s that Rod Lewis is building and any insight on your setup would be appreciated!

We have to make this fly in happen as it would be incredible to have an excuse to get the GT brotherhood together more than once per year...

i hope to get checked out in my Fury next month so can get an epic group of planes together!
