Now that all of the Rally events have calmed down some I can tell the story of Mellow Yellow.
On our annual spring trip to MD this year we worked on a few cars including John’s Pe2tunia (black silver stripe) car. Near the end of our trip John had asked us if we could go with him and look at another car he was thinking about buying. We said, sure no problem as it is on the way home from MD to MI. John had been talking to the owner for a few weeks and had his deal worked out as long as the car passed a PPI. The car had a few issues (as they all do, and if they say they are perfect they are full of s#%*) and we said we could take care of most of them cost effectively and the deal was finalized. We continued on to MI and John drove his new yellow car home back to MD. We had a feeling that John would be calling in the near future with a list of mods and within 3 weeks the car was on its way to MI. Of course this is after John cleaned it to his standards so he knew exactly how the car would be arriving at our shop. Now I know why we didn’t just bring it home with us at the time. Here it is as it arrived.
We spent the first little bit of time with the car repairing some of the little issues car like touching up some of the chipped up paint and fixing a worn door hinge bushing and little things like that. Meanwhile John was trying to decide on what he wanted the car to look like in the end. It took him about 3 months, many, many, emails and hours on the phone to finally decide what he wanted down to the finest detail. Only then were we able to go full speed ahead with the project. The final decision was made on the TT so parts were ordered and we started taking the car apart so we could paint the white Heritage stripe on the car. With regards to the stripe there were many different colors chosen until he decided on white. Which we think was the perfect choice. Sometime into the build Camilo even stopped by to have some service work done on his Heritage car and he saw the potential in what was going to be Mellow Yellow.
The car was finished about 2 weeks before the Rally and we delivered it back to John for final inspection and shake down prior to the Rally to ensure a trouble free event. I had told him multiple times to be careful with the new found power increases and he said that I was scaring him. I told him good, because we don’t want the car back for bodywork reasons as we have seen so many of those as of lately. He spent the next few days driving his new found hot rod learning its new characteristics and was very pleased with all of the decisions that were made. He then re-cleaned himself and loaded it up for the Rally. Other than the weather Mellow Yellow had no issues at the Rally. Here is the list of all the personal touches put into Mellow Yellow and more pics.
