The Mileage Dilema

Iv'e never owned a car that I was worried about putting too many miles on
until getting the GT. I feel like driving it every day and am torn because I can
see racking miles up fast and the value dropping along with it.

On one hand, you only live once and why let the car sit in the garage,
on the other, you are driving dollars off it's value for every mile..

What is a guy to do??

It's only a problem if you sell.

That said, I drive mine two or three times a week.

A few days away make those drives even more special...

You are not 'driving dollars off it's value', you are providing it with a 'Provenance' that will become invaluable later on.

Another way to look at it - when you go to the State Fair, one pays money to go on the thrill rides. Is there a difference?

It depends on who you want to make the car more valuable to.

On one hand, you only live once and why let the car sit in the garage, on the other, you are driving dollars off it's value for every mile. What is a guy to do??

GTFUN,

The first thing you need to do is realize that.....

1. 50 years from now we will all be dead.

2. If you are successful enough to have acquired a Ford GT, the state will confiscate the bulk of the wealth that you still possess upon your death.

3. Every day of your existence brings you a day closer to your demise.

4. Deathbed regrets consists almost exclusively of angst over those things we did not do when we had the chance. I've never heard a dying man express to his family that, "I sure wish we hadn't taken all those vacations together and kept the money in the bank instead".

5. If you preserve your car in pristine shape for the enjoyment of it's next owner, you have turned it into a non yielding investment that requires annual insurance, registration, and maintenance expenses to boot.

6. If you're not going to drive it, you'll not derive any more benefit from it than those who admire it when you park it at your local cars and coffee. The admirers have a better deal however, as they don't have to pay for it.

In short.......drive the damn car. In time, the experiences you share with your Ford GT will leave a few battle scars on it. But those experiences will leave an even more indelible impression upon you. Indeed, the same minor wear and tear that will make your car slightly less valuable to a future purchaser, will make it priceless to you.

At least, that's my take on it.

Chip

Not driving the GT to the fullest extent possible, (and that includes track duty if you're up for it) is like having Shannon Elizabeth for a wife and not taking care of business VERY often.:banana

Drive the car. Like it was made for. Screw the concerns.

This topic is seen frequently on the F-chat forum, where a 8 to 10K miles Ferrari is considered high mileage and a old hag. Ford GT's are nearly bomb proof cars if they are well maintained. Ask Jeff who has over 70K miles on his. Cost of maintainance is minimal compared to other exotics. Every trip I take adds to the provenance and history of my car. I have over 50 track sessions on the car. Drove it over a 1000 miles in one day (to Scottsdale during rally III). I drive it to work a couple of times a week. All wonderful memories. The car cleans up easily and looks like a garage queen even after being driven hard and put up wet. You only get one lap in life...enjoy it.

I think the consensus is a car sitting deteriorates faster than one in use

From the technical, from drying seals, lubricant leak down on dry mechanical internals, and gas deteiorating....to leather drying out in overheated garages, sealed cabins, and vermin eating away rubber and wires.

This is mentioned widely on Porsches, Lambos and esp. Ferraris

Neverthless, the F-car guys worship the odometer like lemmings

Mine keeps getting better the more I use it.....

On that note...off to NYC nightlife to find some spring chickens to keep me in use !

Pretty much what's already been said--drive it as often as you can.

Why did you buy it? Cool mobile art piece for the garage? Something to take out only on perfect days? To increase your skills in Auto polishing? Adding one more vehicle to your car collection?

Many American owners of Ferrari's, Lambo's, Porsche, etc, as a group, have generally become owners of some pretty fine auomotive machinery that they really don't seem to enjoy driving. The e-chat fear, of accumulating miles that will lead to dimunition of their cars value, seems to overshawdow the true purpose of the car itself -to be driven.

Love the quote of a high up type @ Ferrari " The trouble with our American owners is - they just don't drive their cars".

Each GT owner has his/her car for a reason of thier own. Take a look at the mileage poll Kayvan recently started. Nearly 40% have over 10,000 miles on theirs. And if you put all of those cars in one place, you would be hard pressed to find any signs of overuse or abuse. Put the owners of these cars in one place, and you would soon learn that they enjoy their GT's more than just about anything automotive they have ever owned.

You had your reasons for buying a GT. I hope driving it often was #1 on your list of reasons.

It's yours and you get to decide how you want to enjoy it.

:cheers from a very Happy GT Owner.

10,000 miles on her, no one can really tell. Plus, the more you drive, the more you will enjoy.

If you are worried about the future value and don't plan on driving it, SELL IT TO SHELBY NOW! Since the value in real $s is just going to keep going down.

If you drive it, the returns on investment can be priceless.

I have a slightly different look on the milage issue. First off if I could I would own a minimum of 3 GTs. 1st would be bone stock in bubble wrap, why? because I could afford it and having a perfect GT 20 years from now would be a ton of fun and very cool. The 2nd would be a balls out track car, no heater, no a/c, no pw, TT etc. why? because it would be a ton of fun and very cool. The 3rd would be lightly modified car for daily driving. Why? because driving it everyday would be a ton of fun and very cool. Now back to reality.
My only car is #3. Lightly modified Wheels, tires, pulley, some after market bolt-ons. The car was purchased in Aug. of 05 and has 4000 miles on it. The reason why it doesn't have 20 30 or even 40 thousand miles is for one reason. I recall the first time at the dealers' show room when I slipped into the new drivers seat, was engulfed by the smell of new leather, looked through a perfect windshield at flawless hood paint, gazed at her perfect wheels, lifted the clam shell and marveled at her pristine engine compartment, I new right then and there she was no "ho" but the one I would stay true to forever. By keeping my "Gal" up on a pedestal, treating her with love and respect and not jumping on her like my wiener dog on a piece of raw meat, I'm able to relive some of those first feelings and moments when she's un-covered and I her touch her button. Do I roll her over and spank her once in a while? Sure, but once I'm done she goes away for a few weeks or even months and when I return my Gal is almost a virgin again.
If I die early? Mrs SteveA says she will keep my red sweetheart and use her for bait to snare another man. That will teach the SOB to lust after and defile my "Gal".

Drive it

An incredible number of health issues have simultaneously hit me and mine. I am presently unable to drive any manual tranny car. Went to Rally IV and put 3000 miles on my car!! At the end of the day it's still just sheet metal and glass... so drive it. You'll never regret the memories. Kayvan's response was perhaps the most cogent.

We discussed this issue long ago. Declining value is the price of admission. It is like anything you do - it costs. So if your car declines 20K in value, that is what the experience of driving and everything that goes with it cost you.

I am sure mine has gone down 50K. But I have been at 4 rallys and met all kinds of people and have many new friends.

Couldn't buy the experiences we have had for 50K cash.

In other words, drive the fuc_king thing and enjoy it. Like Chip said, you will be dead in a while, so LIVE.

Only said in a happy tone ..... :biggrin
