I have a friend in New Jersey who has had his GT stored for a while (year plus). It's been on a tender. He took it out and the tach is no longer working. He has 37 Shelby's so the GT gets a little neglected:( Any input on the tach? Is it the dead gauge issue we see sometimes?

There is small thread on gauges (intense sarcasm here its like 20 pages). The cliff notes:

OEM gauges fail, no matter tender, no tender, battery dead, no dead, goes on forever the options.

Autometer has produced new gauges, but NOT the tach. You can replace with an OEM "old" version and hope for the best, or change out whole cluster with the Speed Hut versions.

Any remaining questions are found with the search for gauges, but you you will need some time, to even scratch the surface of the amount of posts.

Tender or not, I would try a new battery.

In short, there are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT issues. At each start-up the gauges have to initialize. It they don't initialize in time, they will be rendered "off" for that entire run duration. A low battery is the most common cause for a lack of proper initialization. One or more gauges may not initialize properly with a low battery condition. Typically, if a GT runs a little while (alternator charging away), a re-start will resolve the "issue".

The second problem is much more serious.... a gauge is permanently dead. A dead gauge does NOT move and remains dead throughout multiple re-starts. A new battery will NOT solve this.

In summary, if your friend started and drove the car and the tach was not working.... it would be impossible to know which of the above two problems he was experiencing. However, if the GT was started several different times and each time the tach and only the tach is not functioning, then unfortunately the tach is dead..... and needs to be replaced.
