By some twist of great fortune, a fellow Ford GT buddy and I were invited by Porsche to spend the morning at Barber Motorsports getting to know the Porsche 918. Porsche North America really went out of their way to make it a very special visit. David Donohue, a well known racer, and 2 other folks from Porsche spent the morning with us. David, as a professional driver, knew everything about the car and its inner workings. The rest of the team knew a remarkable amount as well.

After a visit to Porsche's private paddock, we got a great walk around of the car and its amazing on-board control systems. The car is stunning IMHO. To me, it looks great from every angle. I've seen a P1 up close, and I think the 918 is a more timeless design that will age far better. Not to mention the removable roof panels can quickly make it into a convertible. The design really harkens back to the Carrera GT in my eyes. The build quality is amazing. Of course, there are a dizzying array of options available, to make the $880k base hit the upper stratosphere.

After a good walk around, we were most fortunate to spend time driving it on the street, then the track. This crazy car will go 90 mph in all electric mode, silently. In hybrid mode it gets something like 60 mpg. In race mode (combined gas and electric), its acceleration was so fast, it about scared the cr-- out of me. I've been lucky to have driven a few fast cars in my day, but OMG, it's insane. At the same time, it can also be very docile on the street and is very streetable, much like the Ford GT.

After some time on the roads of Birmingham, we then did some driving on the track. It's a fabulous track full of twists and turns and elevation changes causing blind curves. To me, a smaller, but newer VIR. The 918 is insane on the track. As a near novice, behind the wheel it was not hard to keep up with the lead car, a track instructor driven Turbo S. The 918 is so planted, so fast and stable. On a few occasions, coming into a turn too quickly and lifting a bit, I knew if I was in my GT sans electronic nannies, I would have lost it. The 918 held on like a champ.

The 918 is a total dream. I was blown away by the looks, the performance, the ability to street and track drive, the fit and finish. If any of you guys are lucky enough to have ordered one, you will not be disappointed. It's hard for me to think of a car I've wanted much more.

Will post some lousy phone photos soon.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the 918, I saw it during my visit to Monterey this year and felt it was a nice looking car. Of course there are always little things that you'd like to do to personalize the car - such as wheels & etc. However overall it was a mean machine. It's getting interesting to see how the electric side of the auto hobby is catching on. The torque they are getting out of the electric motors is simply staggering - it's going to be fun watching auto makers make everything work for us (the end consumer). Porsche did a great job!

Again, thanks for sharing.

There are no shortage of things that you can do with Porsche to personalize the car. In addition to a long list of 'standard' factory options, they have custom factory options available too. All at a price...

The 918 is like mating a FGT or a CGT with a Tesla (btw I own all 3 of these). Combining a high horsepower gas motor plus the pure electric torque intrigues me. Love the look of the car...kind of a blend of a F360 and a CGT. I have considered selling both my vintage Ferrari's to get one. I plan on following the car closely to see if any major recalls or problems occur, and to see how values trend.

Cool car. Saw one at the Nurburgring couple of days during a TF session. Didn't see it on track but it looked pretty nice.

The torque is insane in this car. Something like 500 ft lbs at only 500 rpms (yes 500).
It's hard to think of a better to time to be a seller of vintage Ferraris than now, as the market has boomed. Some think even a bubble is possible.
Of course, I also wonder how the values of the 918 will fare in the short and long-term.
It's a pretty new technology, that may be improved upon, but many of Porsche's halo cars have done well - 959, early 911s, CGT. Not to mention the 918 will be crazy fun.

Lucky You. Glad you had the opportunity to do this and thanks for including us.

Can only imagine what the custom options list might contain. As with all current Porsche models, option #1 is Un-Obtainium.

I have driven the car on street and on the track. Its awesome. No other experience like it for me and I have driven everything in the world.

I ordered one. To arrive in April. It can be customized and they will do things at the factory as well.

I am going over to Germany and going to tour the line and other back room things there.

If you order one you become a vip of prosche which gives access to all limited run cars and whole other slew of really cool things. Its legit.

One question, do you guys like those wheels on the car. Thats my one big decision point....

I think the car is awesome, and can't wait to ride/drive one. As for those wheels, they do NOT appeal to me, at all. Got to be better choices!!!

No, nor the lime green calipers.

The wheel on the left is very nice. It's similar to the FGT optional wheel.

Jerry Seinfeld got the better choice of wheels, but the same fluorescent yellow calipers are a fail.

Two standout options I recall (price wise): an amazing silver paint option for about a $65,000 upcharge and 4 lightweight wheels for a $28,000 upcharge. Wowsa.

Per the Porsche configurator it's $32,500. I like the calipers on a tech-mobile like this.

So the wheels are 32500. Correct. I was planning on ordering the wheels and then eventually putting after markets on. I am thinking the less number of ugly wheels maybe the more valuable???? I know wishful thinking...

The brake caliper color is a big deal to get factory changed. Roger Penske ordered a red one and ordered grey brake calipers and I saw that live and it looked good. When I spoke to PCNA they gave me a "fight" to do anything other than the lime green. Lime green is the signature I guess. I have not decided yet.

Figures I like the wheels for the $32,500 upcharge. On the FGT the stock wheel is attractive, the optional wheels IMHO a little more so (although on the Heritage, I like the stock look). Don't worry what we think, it's your nickel (a lot more than 5 cents), do what you like!!!!
