I bought a Ford VCM and computer and tested the car. The original speedometer is bad but the new one is good. It tested ok BUT the gauge control module is BAD too. OUCH!
Does anyone know the ford part number for the Gauge Module (GEM)? It has a Pollak Part number 32311 on the side. Does anyone know how to contact Pollak? I tried google with no luck. They made the gauges too.
Thanks

The speedometer is working. Has been working great for 3 weeks. Here's what I did. I bought a complete Ford VCM computer diagnostic setup and hooked it up to the car. I first tested both the old and new gauges. They both did not respond to the signal input from the computer. The GEM (gauge module checked out ok(phew!) I then examined the cluster wire loom at each end. I examined the plugs at each end and the pins at the GEM. Two inspections revealed nothing but the third go around I used surgeons optical loops. The first female connector I looked at was the one connected to the orange/red wire in the plug that attaches to the GEM. It was pulled slightly back into the plug housing.I clicked it back in and replaced the plug. I then retested the gauges. The original was still bad. It did not respond to signal inputs from the computer. But the second(new) gauge responded perfectly. Road test, dash back together and all instruments are go. By the way the original speedometer had the initials E.P. in green on it. I saw this on another post. Now I can use the computer to check all of my Fords right in my garage.

Can anyone explain why it was necessary/what the thinking was regarding the use of such an involved gauge system on the GT ($3K to $5K module boxes and all that)? It would seem there's far more complexity integrated into that whole system than is/was necessary.

EP I am talking a guess here. Since the car uses a ECU, most of the data is in electronic form already. It is much simpler and cheaper to just pass on the data in electronic form to electronic gauges, rather than add redundant gauges using 70s technology. The retail price of many replacement parts are not reflective of the actual production cost, but rather priced to what the market will bear with a eye to maximizing profits.

The system is rather easy to debug if you have the right tools using a VCM computer you test many of the function by sending and receiving data messages, much like a computer does surfing the Internet.

As fordgt6 has done many of the "gauge" problems can easily be diagnose with a VCM. Without one, is like working blind.

BTW, I don't have a VCM what is the part number and retail of the unit?

As a side note for those of you take want a good tach signal, it doesn't exist on the FGT! The data is only in the ECU and is sent via CAN bus messages to the gauge module. One can log it using something like an SCT box, but the data stream is "slow" and not comparable to a real tach signal. Also the FGT has a wire loop near the left rear wheel that is primary side wiring of one of the ignition coil. You can tap that with an inductive pickup for RPM, but that is only reading one cylinder and is 8 times slower than the old fashioned way of reading the primary side of a coil feeds into a distributor.

Like I said, can anyone explain.......:rofl:rofl:rofl

Your guess sounds completely logical, C.L. But, darn it! Going the redundancy route would definately have been a lot cheaper for the end user! :lol thumbsup

Yep, modern cars are going to be a lot tougher and more costly to keep running. In the old days, if a part breaks you can have another one custom one built if no replacements can be found. The cost was high, but within reach of many. With modern cars, if some electronic gizmo breaks and no replacements parts are available, recreating that part may just not be feasible. Can you imagine the cost of recreating an IC without documentation, or a GEM module. Even with documentation the cost would be prohibitive. You would be better off buying another car for parts.

I guess that means the electronics of a FGT will be worth it's weight in gold 100 years from now! Well maybe that is already true today at least for some of the parts.

...only true if electrolysis & general corrosion hasn't render those spares completely useless just sitting on the shelf! :ack

I bought the VCM, Panasonic Toughbook Computer, All wire connections, external cd, warranty (still good) and updates good till 2011 for 4400 on ebay. High initial cost but now I can check anything on any of my Fords and can help out Family and friends.

Can I ask what is the approximate cost of this diagnostic setup (not including computer - I'm up to my gills in those)? I'd be interested in staying on top of the innards of my gal, even if I'd more frequently 'outsource' any needed repairs.
