Speeding ticket in Oregon

On Friday I met my 2000mi black no-stripe GT in CA:tongue and Saturday I started back with Escort 8500 mounted. Everything was going great until the Oregon State Patrol showed up in the rearview mirror. The trooper said that I was going 105mph but wrote me up for 99mph so I was not taken to jail(!!!) and suffer a mandatory license suspension. The Trooper was professional and I was going too fast.

I really want to minimize the points on my record (I think I had four prior to this). I can get three removed by taking a safety class. The court in OR is 400miles from here. Is it worth showing up for an appearance or is there simply no way of getting any relief for 50mph over the limit?

On a related topic. I first saw the patrol car as we both crested a hill in opposite directions. My detector went off and I think this is when he clocked me. How much time is required to get a reading and can a reading be obtained while the patrol car is in motion? Just curious.

In California you can take your safety class online. You might want to see if that is an option for you.

Yes, they can be gotten when the car is in motion. No point in fighting it. Pay the ticket and take the class if you are worried about your record. Sometimes a call to the county atty requesting it stay off your record will work. I have done that more than once.

+1 - same in chicago. I took one online for an illegal left turn, i was likely speeding too but was the officer was nice and let me go on that one. The online course is LONG - took 4 hours. but better than points or showing up for a class, just do it while watching TV or something.

Did he ever lose site of you? That is a pretty good defense.

I would hire an attorney in the town the court is in and fight it there. There are several technical issue that the Trooper could have made a mistake on. 99 over is not one you want on your record.

Hey, the LEO did you a favor lowering the tkt to 99 to keep yer butt outta jail, did he not? O-B-V-I-O-U-S-L-Y you were going way too fast (you admitted that) regardless of what else may be the case. If it were me, I'd simply pay the tkt, take the 'class, and NOT slap the LEO's face in court for having DONE you that favor. Besides, you two may meet again sometime. And if not HIM specifically - one (or more) of his brothers.

I'm jus' sayin'... :cheers

If it was as simple as paying the fine I would do that; however, the potential ramificationsof a 99 mph speeding ticket could be enormous with your insurance company and could affect your premiums for years and cost much more than an expensive attorney. So I gree wholeheartedly with Fubar. Hire the best atty who works cases at that courthouse. :cheers

ABSOLUTELY AGREE! I have no intention of claiming that I am not guilty and I sincerely appreciate the attitude, professionalism and courtesy of the officer. I am only interested in what I might be able to do to reduce the impact of my record. I will take Shelby's advice and call the county attorney and *humbly* request that the points be dropped.

Oregon is very "green" on their speed limits. I was up there a 1½ weeks ago in both the western and eastern portions of the state. Virtually everywhere, the speed limits were 50 or 55 mph max. Only on the Interstates (I-5 & I-84) did they post 65 mph limits. Towns are 40, 30 and sometimes 20 mph. I think they believe that these limits will save oil.

They also require that they fill your tank - no self service allowed. Although, at the stations I where I stopped I said "I don't think you want to fill this, do you?" and the response was "No sir - I don't even want to clean the windshield or touch it."

I didn't run into many patrol cars on my journey, but those that did had their radars on. I just kept to the 50 and 55 limits, rarely going over 60-65, and they left me alone. I felt better when I crossed the border into Washington (heading north) at Portland, and California (heading home) at Goose Lake.

If that in fact CAN be done - why NOT? :thumbsup:thumbsup

We don't have a setup like that here. :frown

(Okay. I'll say it B4 Sam & Mikey & Ice, et al, get the chance: "I wouldn't need to use it if it DID because my cars never come outta the garage...an' cars hafta be DRIVEN B4U can get a ticket like that." :tongue :slap)

In my opinion you have the wrong detector. Long ago I had the original big box Escort. Fantastic thing, saved me over and over. Then they changed to "smaller and more advanced" models, "upgraded" and got busted twice. My wife said to throw that piece out the window.

The only detector worth anything in my opinion is the Valentine One, made by the guy that did the original Escort. It's bigger and more expensive but works great and I love the "directional arrows". And you can upgrade it as technology changes, I'm on my 3rd version. There are threads on the forum on the device. www.valentineone.com

as Kirby said the ramifications of just paying are way too high. Pay an attorney $500.00 to go to court for you and request it to be changed to a non-moving violation that would be about the same amount of fine. Pay the fine for the NMV and be on your way.

Done that more than once ... too many times to be honest with you ... now when the local HP pulls me over (and he seems to be the only one) its a running joke that I should really be wearing my seat belt. ($15.00 fine) once I did not get the "help" and said but I always wear my seat belt (so he wrote me for my window tint ($40.00 fine) instead and said .. this is cheaper than hiring an attorney and we both don't have to show up to court)

Good guy ... just has a job to do that he takes seriously and now that we know each other ... He's just say's "keep it shiny side up and closer to the limit please."

Factually, if you own one of these gals, live in a smaller town ... just spend a bit of time to become a LEO booster ... it fosters A LOT of goodwill and will more likely keep your insurance rates down in the long run.

If we understand this correctly, this was your 1st drive in your Black/no striper. Do your research first by hiring a lawyer, ask him ALL the important questions regarding your future and then use your head and his advise to proceed or not, pay the ticket or not!
Either way, good luck and try to at least keep your driver's license for Rally IV so you can park next to us, another Black/no striper!

I know of a "person" who got a ticket for 99 in a 60 on the George W during rush hour.... being out of state he under direction of his lawyer was able to take a "on- line" drivers defense program and have the ticket under court supervision status disappear as he no longer received any violations in Texas.

problems did occur later when a new underling for the judge took all the "Supervision" cases and palced them in the TexAs DMV as "new tickets" where the persons state immediatley revoked his license...... This was three days after he took receipt of his Ford GT:ack, which was subsequently cleared up later....

My attitude on Speeding Tickets

They are just another Tax. The officer (unless he is an ass) cares about doing his job (safety etc..) and raising $ - tickets, hence the tax.

I would never pay for a ticket because of the implications. Always fight your tickets that may impact your right to drive and the impact it may have on your insurance policy.

Every ticket I fought, and won generated $ for the local police/city and the lawyer - smart DAs and Judges know this.

If you wanna play, you have to pay. In the case of a speeding ticket, it is about minimizing your exposure and retaining your right to drive rather than challenging the Leo's integrirty.

In Illinois, every county is different. I have done the "Drivingschoolonline" and it was a deal. $30 and you're free, but it does take 4 hours of internet time. You will need to talk to the states attorney about the possibility of court supervision, which usually costs you a bunch extra but keeps it off your record. Personally, and I have a lot of personal experience with this in three states, call the states attorney office, ask about supervsion and what it would take, and go that route without the local attorney if you can. If they are not aggreeable, then find a local attorney to handle it.

My Escort 8500 works great. There is no hope against instant on Ka radar regardless if you have an Escort or a Valentine. Laser is even worse.
