So What the Heck Makes a Car "Collectible"?

hmm what makes a car collectible? if the demand is high and the supply short! easiest way to answer that question :) but kidding aside, i think the most important factor is rarity. there are plenty of cars that I feel like are excellent cars and would be very collectible, but are not, I remember when the vipers came out, they were so rare and everyone wanted one, if you saw one on the road it was considered a special occasion, same with some lambo's, now there are so many more of each that it is no longer viewed as so special when you come across one, its human nature, if you see it all the time its not special, if you see it rarely you pay more attention and all of the sudden it has more intrinsic value. its kind of like dating a girl, if you saw her all the time you might get sick of her, if she plays hard to get well then.....

Great question W and some very interesting points Gents!
In the case of the GT what about the 4 years in a row Oscar winning performances, story behind the story starring (inadvertently) bad guy/who does he think is Enzo Ferrari and a disrespected Clint Eastwood played by Henry Ford 2 who fixes him in his own kitchen co starring legendary Dan Gurney et al? North America that was supposedly only good at building straight line cars that can't handle, nor brake nor last long without breaking down - taught not only Enzo and all his European sweet pant friends and fans a lesson. Big time. American style. But also North Americans and car magazines themselves who were starting to think that may be true.
What about the only American Supercar ever built with template silver bullet looks and persona. A bull in a china shop.
But it so looks like one of theirs...
Then Henry Ford 2 decided he'd made his point , daa ya think, and that it was getting boring. So he just left.
He had crapped all over their house.

AMC Pacers are really rare today. I don't think there are any road worthy ones left.

Then again they weren't too road worthy fresh from the dealer's showroom.

They were worth nothing then, and they're probably worth less now. LOL Sort of in the same class as the Pinto's...weren't those the ones that exploded on impact?

Here's a list of real "winners." I would bet all of them are real rare to find today. Maybe EP still has one tucked away with low miles in his garage. :lol

besides those cars you guys posted dont count because they were never in demand, they may be rare now but no one wanted them in the first place

Here's another good definition that captures a lot of what has been said already:

"A car that initiates nostalgic feelings of the past, exemplifies the technology of the era and inspires excitement and aspiration of ownership/restoration."

The much-maligned Mustang II was a good car and Ford sold a bunch of them.
