So What Other Cars Did You Consider?

Thanks!

Do you know the weight of the all aluminum FE?

The shelby block is about 125lbs too:

So 60lbs shaved for the Aluminum.

Do you have the weight comparison from an Aluminum FE vs. 351 Windsor with a steel crank?

Dang, that Shelby block is EXPENSIVE! That is twice as much as a top of the line 385 (429/460) series aluminum block which will support 1500hp+

I don't know, but the aluminum Windsor will always weigh less because it is smaller.

Which Shelby Cobra would be the best bet to purchase? I'm not talking about resale, but quality of car...

The best "Shelby Cobra"to purchase is from Shelby American. Period. It is the only "Shelby Cobra". The rest are copies thereof. Nothing wrong with that but thats what it is. Superformance, ERA, Backdrafts, FFR are all good cars and a good product but they are not Shelbys.

You will pay more for a Shelby. Is it worth it? Thats up to you. It was to me for a number of reasons. Do they sell for more. Yes. Do they return more, yes. Will they increase in value? Maybe so especially if SAI stops making them or goes out of business. There are only about 200 or so aluminum bodied Continuation Cobras in existence at this time. The base roller is now $140K with a year wait.

I have had several "Cobras" from Excaliburs to ERAs. In fact thats when I first met Bony at a Cobra event in Ohio at least 10 years ago.

My Shelby is an aluminum bodied Cobra with a 1965 427SO. From my take and experience it is buy far and away the best. Very well built. It is all to original specs. It is basically a new 1965 427. I have owned it for 12 years now. Great car and a thrill to drive every time. Each time behind the wheel is like going back in a time machine to 1965.

The 289 FIA is defiinitely cool. I love them. Much fewer in number than 427s. Problem is the market for 427 is broader. If I were to do another Cobra I would consider a pure street spec car. A 427 yet different then all the SCs and Comp spec cars out there.

'Heck with the car - who's the fox on the other side of the fence???!

(Okay. I'll acknowledge/admit it. The car is SCHWEEEEEEEEEET!!!)

Edit: Crap. I didn't scroll down far enough. The fox is the Mrs. I shudda knowed that ennyway.

Them is fightin' words on ClubCobra. :lol Seriously, your car is beautiful but IMHO, ALL of the Cobras made after original production ended in the 1960s are copies. A continuation Shelby Cobra is no more "original" than a continuation Superformance GT40. They are all copies. However, I recognize the value to some to have a Cobra made by SAI.

I will agree that in my opinion the best continuation cobra is Shelby built. I was not impressed with the quality of SPF builds. So Shelby American won me on quality. Mine was a carbon fiber car built by HST so was essentially hand built. Several dealers would only accept HST built rollers but they have closed down

For the most part most of the people on club cobra hate Carroll Shelby. There is a crowd that thinks a car with mostly jaguar parts is the best ever. It's not very "unbiased". The one thing they do agree on is that the quality of the engine installer is the key to a successful cobra experience

Tony,

I am not surprised that you agree with your own opinion. :lol

A carbon fiber body is a great idea.

I shouldn't post from remote locations from the iPhone. Or I should proofread closer but you get the drift. It looks like I didn't get the quote from a previous one

The cobra is an animal. The most fun you can have, legally, sitting in public, with your clothes on.

Carbon fiber is a great choice in CO. We get lots of hail and unpredictably so. I got caught in a hailstorm that left me with a bloody head and ears and 6" of hail the size of a shooter marble in the passenger side. Aluminum would have been totaled. Fiberglass star checked. Cf took a licki ' and kept on tickin'

Sinovac: Been on CC for nearly 10 years. Fought that debate many a time. I believe SAACs position put that debate to rest and it's a position I have always agreed with. You are correct that all produced today are copies to different extents of the original series. You are correct that Continuation Cobras are not original Cobras. Can't go back in time. The prduction of 2000 and 3000 series Shelby Cobras is finite. However, Continuation series Cobras are genuine Cobras and not "replicas" as that term is now commonly used. Continuation series Cobras are recognized by SAAC as a genuine Cobra. No other manufacturer can legally call there car a " Cobra" or a Shelby Cobra other than SAI.
Period.

The above is not intended as a slight toward any other car. Just stating the fact on the ground. I love all " Cobras" whether original, continuation or replica.

Pockets: I'll pass the compliment along to the Misses. She's read your posts from time to time when I'm on the forum. She is a Pockets fan for sure.

Waxer, Was your car built by Kirkham for SAI? If not, who rolled the body?

It was a Kirkham sourced roller.

Well, I would argue then you do have the best, by far. And for you, it was worth the extra cost to have it approved and licensed by SAI.

:cheers

2112: I agree. However, Kirkhams are also now considered in the "Pantheon" of "Cobras" by SAAC as noted in the Registry. Rightfully so IMHO just as AC's are with the original series of cars.
The Kirkham Bros. are automotive artists and engineers extrodinarie.

Little known fact is that SAI did modify the suspension on the Kirkham rollers to "their specs".

Kinda cool in a way knowing a former Mig factory had a hand in constructing your Cobra. ; )
