Is there a way to lower the height of the shifter ball?

Maybe cut some of the shifter shaft down and machine threads or deepen the shifter ball threads.

Has anyone done this?

Can anyone do this?

It's been done using the later method. Drill and thread the shifter ball deeper. Clearance drill the first 1/2" or so the ball will fit over the non-threaded shaft of the shift lever. Use a VERY short hex set screw and thread it all the way into the ball. Thread the new ball on and play with the depth of the set screw to get the clocking correct.

550rwhp,

I did this a long time ago. I had produced a shifter ball that screws down much lower on the shifter shaft and it also gets rid on that nut that's on the stock shifter ball. Once that you experience it you will never go back to the original setup. I have put my products on consignment with Shadowman (Bill). Contact him for info. You can install it in five minutes and get about 15% less throw! Jay

MOMO shift knobs are drilled much deeper than the stock knob, and the selection is endless. I installed a MOMO knob and a short shift kit. The result is not for everyone: shifts are extremely short and stiff and reverse is a two-hand process, but I'm quite happy with it. These short shift mods cannot hurt the transmission. It is YOU who loses mechanical advantage over the transmission, and long as you don't try to speed shift any faster than you would without the mods the trans won't know the difference. The same Forum member who bought the last of the Ford Racing short shift kits from B&M also offers his own shift knobs. They, too, are drilled deeper than stock and can be used with or without the short shift kit to customize the amount of "shortness" you desire. As a final mod I combined a cut down shifter sleeve with the screwed down knob for a short, stubby shifter.

It's actually "zrchris", but at 3:28 in the morning, you're functioning much better than I would have been.

I too installed the Ford Racing short throw shifter and a MOMO shift knob, a fantastic mod IMO. I'm probably in the minority here but I never have liked the feel of a ball style shift knob. Here is what I use.

I did the ford short throw shifter and Jay's lowered shift ball many years ago.

Ergo and effort are perfect for me.

I drove one with a pistol grip once. It did take some getting used to.
